Society Who is most generous in Europe?

There is no might be right about it, I am right and you are very wrong in your assumptions. I live in Greece and see and read what is happening here every day right across the country, you do not. After 6 years of depression, unemployment at 27% and no unemployment benefits for anyone after 1...

Society Who is most generous in Europe?

Actually Greeks do a lot it is just done on a personal and community level or through the church so most of it goes undocumented. Currently, the church in Greece is feeding aprox. 300,000 people per day which largely comes from donations from the public. Even our small village supermarket has a...

    Corruption perceptions index for 2013

The operative word is in your title, perception. It is a study based merely on people's perceptions or what they think may be true. It is not necessarily based on fact.

Politics Fiscal Union - Do you approve?

Good post Edao. But it is not so much that the UK should be out of the EU, more that they should just make up their minds what it is they want. From out here it seems that they want all the advantages of the EU but are not prepared to share any of the problems that will inevitably happen.

Politics A new red month? RED DECeber

Good old Fox and CNN at it again! Since when have those two ever let facts get in the way of sensationalism and propoganda? The worst of it, aside from the ignorance and sloppy journalism, is that some people actually believe the rubbish they spout.

Politics Fiscal Union - Do you approve?

No it is not surprising at all, nor is Britain's reaction. On the BBC this morning Cameron was being treated as the all conquering hero for standing up for Britain. Although, I can't figure out exactly how throwing his toys out of the pram and storming home is helpful to Britain, the sideline...

Proxy IP banned from now on

Well we live and learn, this thread has urged me to look up exactly what a proxy IP is, but I'm darned if I know what dynamic and static IPs are, Sparkey! The internet hadn't been invented when I went to school, nor computers as we know them. lol

Why do American kids call Santa Claus "Santa" instead of "Claus" ?

There is a vague awareness that Santa Claus is St Nicholas, or at least there was when I grew up. But I had a Catholic education and maybe that is where my knowledge of St Nicholas came from, I cannot remember and cannot say what other religions taught children. Anyway, I think that any...

Politics A new red month? RED DECeber

Not just Moscow, St Petersburg as well apparently. It will be interesting to see if there is any backlash by the government against protesters though.

    Surnames in - -hardt, (h)art, -(h)ard, aert and -ardi : a Frankish origin ?

Ah, thanks for the explanations Maciamo, Zanipolo, Edao and Yetos. Fascinating subject. I don't suppose the art, ard, aert endings are too disimilar from the old Anglo/Saxon prefix or suffix of bert, meaning bright?

    Surnames in - -hardt, (h)art, -(h)ard, aert and -ardi : a Frankish origin ?

Does anyone know if there is a specific meaning to the surname endings art, ard, aert etc? Like the son, sen, sson endings in British and Scandanavian names all mean son of. Or the Scot/Irish/Welsh prefix Mac, Mag, Mc, Ap again son of, or the Irish O which means descendant of. The Cretan...

Politics Do you think France & Germany can solve the Eurozone crisis?

It is not specific to Germans though. Many French, British, Greek, Americans, Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Swedish, Russian, Australian, Turkish, etc etc etc are also arrogant. Unfortunately, it is a condition that is to be found all over the world. But basically, all arrogance says about a...

Why do American kids call Santa Claus "Santa" instead of "Claus" ?

That is only assuming that the English speaking world even know that Santa means Saint. But they honestly have no idea what the word means, and wouldn't care even if they were told. To them Santa is and has always been the jolly fat man who wears red pyjamas, nothing more and nothing less.

    Do we need WW III?

So Cameron has finally realised that cut-backs alone will not work, that there has also to be some sort of incentive to produce growth if an economy is to recover. I wish our idiots in the government would realise it also. All they are doing right now is slash and burn, therebye strangling the...
