    Y-DNA haplogroups of ancient civilizations

The Kurgan Hypothesis is still the most widely accepted model, but that does not mean Renfrew's theory has no good points. Take the archaic nature of the Anatolian languages, for example. Plus, the Yamna trail mysteriously disappears beyond the western border of the Pontic-Caspian Steppe. But we...

    Y-DNA haplogroups of ancient civilizations

There is no telling at the moment. However, if one looks at the Eurasian haplogroups R1a and R1b, there is a strong connection to the spread of Indo-European both to the west and east. The spread obviously included other groups beyond the R1 people, but the main thrust of the migrations appears...

Bashkirs: What Subclades of R1b Were They?

The following excerpt is taken from the official, 450-year hallmark page of the Bashkortostan province joining the Russian Federation : "The written sources of the IX-XI centuries A.D. let scientists advance the Turk theory of Bashkir ethnos. The head of ethnology department of the Institute...

Bashkirs: What Subclades of R1b Were They?

First off, we do not know what R1b frequencies are in Ukraine 6000 years ago. I do not see why we should apply a double standard to R1b near the Pontic-Caspian Steppe vis-a-vis the recent Neolithic finds of G2 and I2 in France and Spain. Both of the latter haplogroups were much more common in...

More precise R1b subclade estimates using Nordtvedt's methodology

Thanks, Sparkey! I gave it a good reading. I guess the million-dollar question is, what language is R1b speaking when it (and fellow travelers) enters Europe?

Where do you think P312/U106 came from before Unetice?

Didn't the Beakers spread Indo-European to the West?

    Celtic or Norse?

I just consulted my Scottish clans manual, and you are right! Have any family from the Strathspey/Badenoch area?

    Celtic or Norse?

I should have explained myself better. The ratio of M222 to L21 in Norway is so low, it implies that the Viking slave trade had little effect on the genetics of that country. L21 must have been there earlier. People disagree, but in my opinion, most of the L21 arrives in Norway from a source...

    Celtic or Norse?

I agree with that. No doubt some of that L21 came from Scotland and Ireland, but not all of it.

    Celtic or Norse?

It is interesting to note L21's rarity amongst the Low Countries, but it picks up again in Scandinavia. It must have gotten there by sea, and earlier than the Viking Age to put up some decent numbers there.

    Celtic or Norse?

The recent Old Norway study out of Gothenburg actually shows L21 in much higher frequencies in Norway (even further inland) than its downstream clade of M222. The latter is clearly absent from much of the Norwegian male population which makes me think how many slaves were actually taken back to...

You don't like Celts, do you? lol

    Celtic or Norse?

L21 also has a decent presence in Sweden and the coasts opposite Denmark (although Northern Jutland is higher in L21 than places like Schleswig). Its presence along the coasts of Norway makes me think it got there by sea (Bronze Age?), and I wonder about Iceland too. It depends on where in...
