    Politics Socio-political views

I also agree vandalism isn't as serious as robbery or rape. Depending on the severity, vandalism is something that can be remedied to the point where it's as though it never happened. The same doesn't go for robbery or rape. I don't know if anything is as bad as murder, but rape, especially of...

    Black Racism

I certainly didn't mean to imply you didn't, but the original posted story, along with the rest of this thread, make no mention of differing socio-economic spectrum wherein the offenders and offended are at an affluent level. While racism in lower-income areas may be more explicit and outwardly...

Sorry for the misunderstanding Ma Cherie, I actually wasn't replying to your post, but to the OP.

    Black Racism

Racism against asians doesn't just happen in poor areas. I've been called a variety of names intended to hurt me in my nice suburbs near Orange County. Commonly referred to as the Elvis factor, there are idiots who believe anything everywhere. Solution? I read this quote somewhere, so I'm not...

    Kid-porn woman is let off

Ahh double standards. If a guy had ANYTHING close to this, he'd be jailed and possibly dead within the year.

How much of Dixie do you have in your speech?

Oddly enough, 50% yankee, despite having spent my entire life in So Cal and having some relatively heavy Nor Cal influences. I guess the term ya'll got me.

Do people have bachelor parties where you come from ?

Bacehlor parties, also known as stag parties, definitely depend on what kind of people the groom, groomsmen, and bride are. As far as I know, it's a fairly universal thing in the States, though I can certainly see it being somewhat frowned upon in more religious areas.

Did/does your school rank students by results ?

Our school singled out the top 20 GPA students, into which I managed to squeeze, and gave them their own page in the yearbook. We got a special sash for graduation, and it felt nice to be recognized for getting good grades, if not for being better students. Aside from that, nothing was ever made...

    Fight for consistent social laws

I can certainly understand a desire to see consistency across the board in terms of legislation. But it's so much more complex than simply applying logic. Even if logic were the only factor driving legislation, it wouldn't necessarily mean everyone would approach them the same way. Even within...

    Cultural table manners

How do you lefties typically deal with the problem of having your eating arm in the same basic location of a righty on your left side while eating? I've seen people hit elbows, of course, but do you ever switch seats, or are you conscious of it while being seated?

Hispanic Americans a growing force, figures show

While hispanics may someday "destroy" the anglo-part of American culture, I wonder how they will affect the country in a religious sense. Many hispanics are devout Catholics, but as demonstrated repeatedly in the border issues, conflict with another largely religious region of the US: the Bible...

Does multilingualism interfere with your thought processes?

I've had the same problem ever since I started learning Japanese. It seems like I'm always using Japanese particles instead of Spanish ones. Then again, perhaps I haven't experienced the full impact of such a phenomena since I'm far from fluent in either Japanese or Spanish.

How do you eat your spaghetti ?

I'm a twirler as well, though occasionally I'll get carried away in a style reminiscent of an I Love Lucy episode. The spoon is only brought into play at a nice restaurant, and even then I find msyelf using it reluctantly.

    Cultural table manners

Ha! That's good stuff! My brother is a shoveler, especially with spaghetti, and I always find it fairly amusing. With pasta noodles, I tend to just wind them up on the fork without the use of a spoon. The spoon is nice for restaurants and the like, but at home it's just another utensil to wash.

    Cultural table manners

A acquaintance of mine, I believe he's Egyptian, once told me that crossing your knife and fork over your plate was a sign of appreciation for the food, while business etiquette states you should leave them at a 10:20 position specifically. Anyone else ever heard of this?

    Cultural table manners

While I've seen numerous threads detailing Japanese table manners, I haven't seen one regarding the rest of the world and how those who travel or immigrate have had to adjust their style. This thread was inspired by a rather disheartening story regarding the treatment of a Filipino boy in a...

    Common Sense?

Common sense is a series of conclusions that any rational, logical person should be able to arrive at without much effort. Kinsao's examples are perfect illustrations of this. The one I remember being scolded about as a child was not touching a stove after it's just been turned off. Common...

Most infamous man of the 20th century

I voted Hitler. He had the "advantage" of gaining notoriety in the first half of the century, thus ensuring his influence would spread over the rest of that 100 years. His visage is likely more recognizeable worldwide, he perpetuated arguably the most infamous "single" atrocity of the century...

What is ideal height for girls?

Anything shorter than me (I'm 5'9" or about 175 cm)...though I do have a fantasy of being with a really tall woman (idea from Seinfeld).
