I open this thread to discuss and share about European Animation, movies or TV series.

I think that Animation is a very importan part of history of Cinema. One cannot go much into discussing Amrican or Japanese entertaiment without mentionig things like Disney, or Anime.

Still, I do not want to simply copy-paste a Wikipedia article about that, go chronological, by country... etcetera.

( Well, just for the sake of being formal, here is an article about Animation, that mentions (along Japanese, American and others) the most important European animations, and from there, one can delve more...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_animation )

++++++++++++++++++

Simply, post in this thread which are the animations you love the most, or you feel are interesting.

Regards.

This German animation "Die Furchtlosen Vier" (1997)

A film with extremely high production values, that could rivalize with any Disney movie.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119170/

It is a great musical, and I leave you some the songs...

Of France, I liked very much "Les Enfants de la Pluie" (2003)

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296619/

(Really @Lynx... you have to see it. It has all you like, including "evil treacherous Arabs", and almost all the heros are blond.)

Unfortunatelly, not all in the IMDB think the same...

The story of El Cid has excited people for centuries; unfortunately, the movie will not. This piece of animation from Spain is overly long, lacks a gripping storyline, is not funny, and the animation is spotty at best. The characters are not very well drawn (forearms which are supposed to be muscular are replaced by drawings of what seem to be big balloons), the background does not evoke the beauty of Spain, and it all seems to be monochromatic. One particularly distasteful detail is that all the 'good' Muslims have Spanish accents while the 'bad' Muslim has an Arab accent. My son was bored and my daughter commented: 'We came to see the wrong movie'. That says it all.

Another blunder: They do not utter the word "Celt" in the whole movie. :D :D

hahahaha you can't stop thinking about me, don't you? hahahahaha  I guess you also have nightmares about me saying: "No Sirious, these mexicans girls don't look spanish they look a bit amerindian, booooooooooh" hahahahaha  Looks like I really get under your skin.

OK Sirious, I'm going to end with your suffering right now: YES, AVERAGE MEXICANS DO LOOK LIKE SPANIARDS. In fact, average mexicans look whiter and more europeans than spaniards.

Are you happy now, pathetic and racist being?

And now please, take me out of your sick mind forever. And you can't stop making clones in this forum in order to bait me also. (y)

Poor Sirious has been reduced to try mocking at us through distorting the characters and argument... of an animated movie!!!!

As for the arab characters of El Cid - the movie. I don't recall the arab public or politicians protesting at this movie. In fact, I know magrebians who watch the film and actually liked it.

If you want to see people protesting at any mediatic production watch this:

Mexico protests Europe Burger King Texican Whopper advertisement's use of Mexican flag

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

amd_texican.jpg

This Burger King ad has sparked Mexican outrage, specifically over the use of the Mexican flag.

MEXICO CITYMexico is protesting what it says is a whopper of an insult.

An advertisement for Burger King's Texican Whopper burger that has run in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape resembling a Mexican flag. The wrestler teams up with a lanky American cowboy almost twice his height to illustrate the cross-border blend of flavors.

"The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," a narrator's voice says.
The taller cowboy boosts the wrestler up to reach high shelves and helps clean tall windows, while the Mexican helps the cowboy open a jar.

Mexico's ambassador to Spain said Monday he has written a letter to Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican."

Press officials at Burger King Corp. offices in Miami, Florida, and Madrid, Spain, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Burger King is known for its signature Whopper hamburger.

One of the things that most angered Mexican officials was a print edition of the ad showing the wrestler wearing what appear to be a Mexican flag as a cloak.

"We have to tell these people that in Mexico we have a great deal of respect for our flag," Zermeno said.

Mexico has very strict rules about using the flag. In 2008, the government fined a foreign-owned publishing house, Random House Mondadori SA, for showing disrespect to the country's flag in a video posted online.

The video showed a literature fan wearing a Mexican flag like a cape as he barges into a book signing and rips a piece of cloth from the coat of Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho.

It is not the first time that fast-food outlets have offended Mexican sensibilities.

Mexicans and other Hispanics in the
United States objected to a Taco Bell ad from the 1990s that featured a pint-sized talking Chihuahua that spoke with a Mexican accent.

"They do not utter the word 'Celt' in the whole movie"... So? The context did not call for the term "Celt" to be utilized, obviously. Time to move on. You are wasting your time...

hmmm..That's interesting, so you have been to those IMBD message boards to see what people think about Spaniards , the same way you have been in Stormfront and other forums to know what people think about spaniards,..in hope that they don't consider us fellow europeans and 'white'....Yes, we already know about your pathetic obsession for spaniards. By the way, what have CELTS anything to do with that movie ?? :useless: :banghead:

Oh, no!!! You trashed my theme... :petrified: :petrified:

Now, to get to the next animations, people would have to past through your garbage...

( Now you could be satisfied... :useless: )

In the West (not in Japan) the animations with adult themes have been sparce in time, mostly as "experiments".

If this theme could include non European films, I would mention the American "Fritz the Cat" as a very important milestone.

Nevertheless, some very interesting animations of the kind have been made in Europe.

From the U.K. "The Plague Dogs" (1982)

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084509/

Shocking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ostgqhDjIo

A perfect film. Strong characters, wonderful animation; a rarity. It manages to be real; it actually CAPTURES the totality of its components without catering to any audience.

It's a difficult film to watch. You suffer alongside, vicariously. The hardships portrayed here are viciously painful. You'll hug your pets tight and be glad they wound up as your pets. This movie is very special - considering the content, it could have easily been pandering and preachy. It manages to go so far beyond anything you've ever experienced. It's quite an achievement on every level.

It won't leave you happy, but it will affect you permanently. It is emotional, but never manipulative. It's a tragic and unrecognized masterpiece.

From Germany, "Felidae" (1994)

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109791/

The famous "dream scene".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6jiFaueLTI&feature=related

(No, I willl not put here the famous sex scene ;) ).

Seeing this scene in particular, I cannot help but to believe that they wanted to imitate the style of "Plague Dogs", without much succes. Between "Plague Dogs" and "Felidae", definitely the dogs. Although the sex scene between the cats and its dialog (in German) was an add to more freedom in animation.

Cannot be overlooked that the novel, much more successful was written by a Turk.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From Italy, "Allegro non troppo" (1976)

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074121/

This very hard-to-find mix of animation, music and comedy is a real treat for those who can appreciate it. I recorded it from TV some years ago, and it's still one of the most valuable articles in my archive. Very clever use of in-between b/w passages, great classical music and animations of totally different styles, concepts and attitudes, but each so well-blended with the music and the whole picture that you hardly get distracted.

I don't agree with the comparisons to Fantasia, this is something different. It deals with things (and uses imagery) that a Disney product would never dare, let alone in the days Fantasia was made.

If you have the slightest admiration for art, and can stand movies without the standard hollywood cliches, grab this one (though that won't be easy) and you'll not be sorry. 10 / 10

Awwww, poor SiriusMike2b. We trashed his thread. :depressed:

What he could have done to deserve this terrible fate? :sad-2: Nothing of course (as always) his only goal creating this very trascendental thread was helping everyone to meet "Die Furchtlosen Vier", "Les Enfants de la Pluie", etc.

He wasn't trying to create any disturb on Maciamos' forum.

Spanish animated movie - Planet 51

cartel-planet-51.jpg

Official trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n8PGnc_cV4

Plot: American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker lands on Planet 51 thinking he's the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders. (No, not that kind of alien invaders, Sirious. ;) )

Hey, @Lynx, this "Planet 51" looks kinda-phantastic.

Did you know that the most able computer animators that have collaborated with the most expensive computer animations of past years, were Spaniards?

Wall-e: http://www.vayacine.com/animacion/animadores-espanoles-en-pixar

The Incredibles: http://www.elmundo.es/navegante/2004/11/26/cultura/1101461363.html

Cars : http://www.hoycinema.com/actualidad/noticias/cars-pixar.htm

UP: http://www.dalealplay.com/informaciondecontenido.php?con=189549

And so on... Spaniards are wonderful... animators.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But you know something? To put storyline, emotion and empathy in an animation movie, it is very difficult for Spaniards.

I will not bring the critics of "Planet 51".

Just to mention something, you Spaniards need to know.

Regards.

The storyline of Planet 51 was written by north-american writer Joe Stillman. Spanish producers only bought him the script.

Anyways, spanish cinema overall sucks big time IMO.

Greetings.

Spanish cinema is pretty much a mixed bag in terms of quality. Probably no different than many other countries.

Hi all

I imagine I’m not the first but I’m someone on the hunt to find a film I saw in my childhood but never knew the name of. It’s something that’s trapped in my memory and keeps coming back to me. It’s driving me wild not knowing what it is so please help if you can!

This was taped off UK television sometime during the late 80s/ early 90s. It was almost certainly a european animation, deeply inspired by Japanese anime. I'm guessing it may be French. I don't know the name but I do remember snatches of the plot in some detail.

A man driving a vehicle (which can be spider-like in caves and run on wheels on flat ground) picks up a distress message from somewhere across the other side of the galaxy. It's a small child, he's the only survivor of some incident and he's trapped on a strange world where insectoid flying creatures try to attack him. The man picking up the signal gives the boy the advice he needs to survive, essentially, he tells him to go and hide in a massive jungle of thorny roots and branches.

Not wanting to leave him to his fate, the man goes on a crusade to rescue the boy, picking up many different characters along the way.

One of these seems untrustworthy (and is quite androgynous) but ultimately gives up his life to save the group on some world with aliens that look like angels, which is plagued by an evil overmind. This companion dies by being wrapped up in the tentacles of this thing and ultimately swallowed up - giving them enough time to flee. The crew narrowly escape a massive volcanic disruption that takes place following this event that ultimately destroys the planet.

The journey across the galazy is broken up with interludes of the boy lost on the strange planet. One of them includes him discovering that he can drink the juice of a giant strawberry-like fruit.

Another of the companions is an old man they pick on a very peaceful planet. On this planet there is a strange flower that, when it blossoms, releases hundreds of cute little creatures into the world. He helps one of these creatures that can quite wiggle free and it joins them.

Ultimately, they never make it to the boy and end up on the world of some civilisation that specialises in medicine because the old man is dying. It turns out that - due to some weird time travel incident or the sheer distance between worlds in a way that makes no sense to me – that this very old man is actually the boy they were trying to save. He was rescued from his dillema by a humoid alien. The old man has a metal plate on his head, which is something this creature did to mend a wound the boy received while awaiting rescue.

The final scene is the boy/old man passing away having lived a fulfilled life.

Weird, I know.

I’ve never been able to find out what it is. I’ve watched a bit of anime in the years since trying to discover what it is – mainly things like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and the Studio Ghibli films. Can you help me? I’m afraid that’s all I’ve got to go on.

Thats really weird I remember seeing that film now to, I particularly remember that scene, it stayed with me for a long time I found it very disturbing. As a kid you always expected the good guys to win or at least be saved at the last minute, I suppose with animated films you can put in adult themes and then call them cartoons and play them to kids.

I had forgotten all about it up to now, thanks a bunch Moon, I don't know what it was called and I'm not sure I want to.
