Yes, living in Denmark, this has been headline news...it is terrible that so many lost their homes, and from the police footage, the town of Kolding sure does look like a war zone....
Some of the more than 2,000 people evacuated from their homes, following a huge fire and explosions at a firework factory on Wednesday, have been allowed to return home.

The massive fire at the N.P.Johnsens firework factory in Kolding, Jutland, damaged 350 buildings, killed a fire-fighter, injured 25 others and destroyed at least 20 houses.

Defence Minister Sren Gade, who visited the scene, said It looks like a moon landscape-its worse that the many war zones I have seen.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established but Business Minister, Bendt Bendtsen has gathered an investigative subcommittee to probe the horrific explosion and review safety conditions in every fireworks manufacturer in Denmark.

Environmental specialists and doctors, who are in the process of evaluating the health and environment consequences of the fire, say that it is unlikely to give health problems to Kolding residents.
    Here are some pictures:

there is a sort of artistic statement when there's so much destruction going on and in the middle of it all there are beautiful fireworks going off, which commonly gets us thinking of celebrations.

That's some amazing video and photos. And, no, I hadn't heard this story before and I work for a TV news station. We're pretty stuck in our own little world around here.

On another note, I think the last time I heard someone speak Danish was when I was 6 years old. It sounds very strange to me, but that's just because I don't know anything about it.

    Yes, it sounds strange!!
I learnt it when I moved to Denmark, and now I speak it fluently without foreign accent!! *Yes, I am proud of it.*
(In fact, I speak English, Japanese and Danish without foreign accent. I am a linguist 100%)
For foreigners, Danish is easily misunderstood with Dutch, as both languages sound similar. For foreigners, Danish sounds like you are talking with a hot potato in your mouth!!

Thanks for the footage Miss_apollo & RockLee,

I heard that the amount of the explosive in fireworks is small compared to most explosives, but if they blew up all at once like that, it must be enormouse noise and damage.

Yes, it was a big explosion. Apparently there was a "mushroom sky" over the town of Kolding because of the pressure, which could be seen from miles away.
More than 300 homes are destroyed, so the pressure and the explosion was BIG!

Now the insurance companies are facing huge pay-outs....
A British tabloid paper has called it "apocalypse now" :
