    The ancient Phoenicians were known to be culturally and technologically advanced. They were also great traders, explorers, and builders of colonies.     Several stone tablets with inscriptions resembling Phoenician scripts and Punic scripts (Carthagian variant of Phoenician) have been found in North and South Americas. Some of the claims about the lost tribe of the Hebrews might sound far-fetched, but the Pheonician-looking tablets bearing inscriptions that can be deciphered in the Phoenician tongue (acc. to one specialist) raises the interesting question whether the Phoenicians or Carthagians crossed the Atlantic in the classical period and built colonies in the Americas.
