It looks like everybody have something to say about their country?s leader. is there a good leader? there are always problems, then it is the education, the the salary?s pension money, etc etc.

what is your country?s biggest problem you think? and how would you solve it, when you were the leader?

but yeah when you solve one thing, you need to get money from something else, so if you want to put more money into the health system, you need to take money of from the education.. when you solve the biggest problem, what would you cut?

If I was the president of the United States, I probably wouldn't be able to accomplish much thanks to the powers of Congress, lobbyists, corporate influences, and the two party system.

Now if I was a dictator.......

okay but what if you had that power mad pierrot, if you have the power to change things....

If I was a dictator?

Welcome to the New America

1. Every Thursday night is Lady's night.
2. Popcorn is free at the movies.
3. All rappers must use real names. (No more P Diddy)
4. Cell phones would be banned outside of houses.
5. Everyone must now address me as the "High Lord of Everything Else."

i like your new america, but are this things really problems... real problems, i am sure america has many other real problems

Small is not only beautiful, but more manageable. If I were a dictator, I'd take over the whole world, assign free citizenship, and start collecting taxes from them all so they won't have to go hungry in the lean times.

Actually, the best thing the US can do is to return some decent pieces of land to the Native Americans, and let them govern themselves. Kidnap all the war-mongers and have them serve children at DisneyWorld. Persuade the oil people to support the Kyoto protocol, give them enough work to do in alternate energy business such as non-trans vegetable oil, and phase out the use of Texas tea so we can still have cheap aspirin in a thousand years. Protect the whales, cause they bad for you, and clean up the heavy metal in the seas so our next generation can enjoy clean, healthy fish for once. I almost forgot, give out decent 5 cent cigars for people like Mike Cash. And legalise smoking as long as it doesn't hurt the person next to you. :p

Great post, Lexico !

If I had absolute power in Europe, I'd start by :

- reforming the education

- divide the EU in small semi-independent states on a dual level lie the Belgian system (by geographic regions for the economy and by language-group for the education and cultural affairs), and increase democracy based on the Swiss system (small cantons/provinces with a lot of autonomy).

Education and democracy are the most important thing for a country to prosper. I would also liberalise a bit the economy (e.g. France wouldn't be able to block foreign competitors to enter its market), and double-check all EU and national laws, evaluate them and reform them if needed (of course, there will be many specialists to help me in this task).

If by some weird "luck" i`d happen to be a leader of my country i`d resign :D
And definitely wouldn`t dare to decide the fate of the whole world

I agree only on one issue - education, the system, the content - it has to be
changed. Because education it is what forms people`s mind. Altogether
with state`s ideology. They change mind and prepare it for the changes. But it takes time. In some of JRef`s threads member Innerfire made a good point - population of the country must be ready for democracy. And at the same time i would agree with Mamoru-kun - how could i know that democracy is the best solution for any country
BTW, people, we widly use these word, but what it is - democracy?

I`d love to see the world without boundaries, citezenship of Earth very appealing idea. But the same as with democracy - are we ready for this? Our economy, our tolerance, our generosity?
Ok, i can collect taxes (assuming that people eagerly will pay them :D), but money are supposed to work (to be worth of anything in lean times) how it can be done on a global scale? And how would you keep track of all the
personal recordes, so not to say at rough times : "Sorry, Mr. Smith, you are not listed in our database we can`t give you any subsidy" :D
And who is to pay the maintanence cost of huge bureaucratic apparatus, or how are you going to get rid of it and manage governing of the whole world?
How to make giant companies and single individuals to spare some money for education, medical and social care, environment, and not only for personal and corporate well being?
The key is education, no doubt, but it is not changen just at once, and even changed it will take some time for the effects to show themselves

if i had a power to change things... We have a saying : "Good intentions pave
road to hell " My good intentions might not be so good for the rest of the world. I`ll take care of medical system as you said, Dutch baka, at the expence of someone else. I don`t know how to balance without empty promice "This is for you future benefits, people, bear for a while, don`t grumble". Maybe, i can succeed only in one case when the team which works with me shares the same goals. And even in this case i don`t see fast solution and how to make everyone happy and satisfied

but, ahh, to think about tiranny! * marvels * Just imaging all those people watching carefully my royal mood, and all those politicians looking devotedly into my eyes begging to sign some papers. How pleasing to female ego :D
Or just to picture some G8 summit and such. I come late, dressed like hippi with boombox singing loudly something of Bob Marley`s, enter the room with the kick on the door, saying into their sour dazed faces : "Don`t worry, be happy!" or "Guys, don`t get strangled with your ties"
:D

No One Would Be Allowed To Keep.....

over $100,000 in income;every penny beyond that would go for taxes. Congress would be run by low income honest people. For as long as possible I'd have all our military home rebuilding our country. Boy, I really am crazy!!

Not really, Frank ... and welcome back, young man!

Personally - my variation would be - taxes .... after $20,000PA ... 10% across the board - no loopholes, no breaks, no relief. Fill in a small card each year declaring your income ... and that's it! US, Canadian, British, Japanese, French, German ... whatever ... the world would be a more relaxed and better place! ... and Government coffers would be full!

(What would we do with all those beaurocrats, though ......?)

?W????

P.S. - I've got $20(CDN) that says some smart-assed young bugger's gonna play with my numbers .....!

Raise taxes!

My big priority would be the Health Service. I think everyone should get all the treatment they require, no matter how much it costs, for free, and I would pay for this by raising taxes. I think the taxes for lower earners are OK, but I would put 30% tax on any earnings over GBP30,000, 50% over GBP50,000 and cap earnings at GBP75,000 - anything over that reverting to the state (excellent idea Frank). That should easily pay for better healthcare. I would also reform welfare. There are too many people claiming benefits who could easily work - if they can't find a job themselves the extra taxes could pay them minimum wage to clean the hospitals, then we could forget about MRSA. Anyone who genuinely can't work should get enough to live on - but I would be a lot stricter than we are now.

BTW, what sort of taxes do Americans/Canadians pay? 10% doesn't sound a lot to me Sen-san!

I would cut the interest for student loans, and allow international students to pay a much significantly less fee than what they already do. Also if an international student stays and works in their desired field, for more than five years, I would guarantee them automatic citizen ship.
For those sitting on the dole for no apparent reason and living off the tax payers money, I would put them on an island where they would have to be self sufficient to survive. People on sickness benefits because of their heavy drug use, I would put them on another island with the means to cultivate their desired drug, they would still be under my power, but they would not receive benefits, nor would they be allowed to sell the drugs off of the island. Instead they can do other things like grow gardens, breed animals for consumption and share everything without relying on tax payers or family.

Oh, there are some interesting ideas here! :) :D

But myself, I don't know enough about such things as economics, really to know how government works from the "top" in practice... never having been Prime Minister or even a lowly MP  But, I can vaguely say, I would put at the top of the priorites, Health service and education. And to support these I would take money from... *thinks*... from politician's salaries!!! :D

I was thinking of taking money from budget of armed forces, but I am assuming that even though I am ultimate leader of the UK  the world is not a perfect place and we may be required to defend ourselves at any time... :(

I think I'd cry. I do NOT want to be the so-called "leader of the free world". If I could overhaul U.S. society and government, I don't even know where I'd start. Oh yes, I do. I'd repeal the estate tax cut and probably many other such tax cuts. I think in my America I'd restart Johnson's Great Society and try to end hunger. Internationally, I`d annex Japan. (JUST KIDDING!) Seriously, I'd remove America's seemingly unquestioning support for Israel, and make them sweat a bit. :relief: Just for starters.

1. Fix our lousy education system, especially in urban parts of the city where education problems are ignored.

2. Healthcare for everyone. Why should people who the most money have healthcare?

3. Get rid of poverty in the US. As far as I'm concerned there shouldn't be poverty here.

4. Direct Americans to more important problems that are affecting our nation. Before we can even consider policing the whole world, we need to re-think our role as a superpower. We're not here to boss everyone around.

5. Encourage women and minorities to become more active in politics and think about how political decisions will effect us.

6. Legalize gay marriege, homosexuals getting married doesn't effect us. Slashes in medicade does effect us, budget cuts in education does effect us. One more success in civil rights people.

7. As a superpower, America has put itself in the position to where it's basically became an obligation for us to help less fortunate nations. Donate money to Africa to fight the AIDS epidemic. Teach the world about globalization and teach the benifits of it (yes, I know there's bad parts to globalization, but I'm kind of pro  ).

8. Saudi Arabia is our ally, and yet it's one of the most repressive regimes in the world, we remain allies with them because of oil. My point here is, we need to stop turning blind to nations that are huge violaters of Human Rights just because they have valuable resources. Hey, let's find more ways to be fuel efficient.

9. Keep idiots out of office!

10. Have people like Pat Robertson assasinated, we don't need people like that! (kidding obviously)

11. Separation of Church and state, if Kansas wants to teach the theory of evolution, then let them, remember it's just a theory!

This has become a political rant, I'm sorry about this. Please forgive, but I want what's best for my country. :)

Do you mean creationism ? The theory of evolution is what is taught in every developed country, but a few US States that cling on Christian creationism.

At first glance .. it doesn't, does it! In Canada we have a sliding scale somewhat similiar to what I remember as being in the UK ... about two centuries ago, when I left! It is similar in the US.

We pay both Provincial/State and federal taxes. It varies according to income but in very general terms - seems to whack out at approximately 20-30%

However!

The key to my proposal was "across the board - no loopholes, no breaks, no relief"!

A helluva lot of Billionaires/Millionaires .... can afford to 'play the system' and buy their way into 'tax breaks' to the degree ... where they pay no tax ... at all!

I myself am able to invest money every year in savings plans which ... relieve me of substantial amounts of my tax burden. I use it, of course - bu it seems wrong. I would much prefer to have a smaller tax bill in the first place - and see those folks richer than me not have an "out". Ten years ago, I knew a guy who became a millionaire by winning a lottery. Not only did the tight bugger not even buy anybody a drink ... his tax bill shrank!

Bloody immoral!

I think you might be surprized to see the yield of "10% across the board - no loopholes, no breaks, no relief"! were it to be applied.

It's the only thing I ever agreed with Ronald Reagan on! And that's saying something!

....we could probably also reduce the Revenue Dept. to 4 gals with calculators - and save a few million there, too!

Regards,

John

just to think about idea. Woudn`t it equalize people? Maybe just go straight ahead and set same wages for everyone  Sorry, guys, it`s not going to work. Besides, taxes work not oly for welfare and medical care but for many other fields.
For example, in my country it is not rare for people to recieve salary "in envelope", which means one sum - on paper and bigger one "in the envelope". It is done to avoid taxing. One thing to impose the rule, and absolutely different - to make it working

It's the thought that counts though. Yeah, it might not work, but if we don't try it definitely won't work! And I am all for equalising wages to some extent. There is no reason for the current disparity, other than some people's greed.
