I was a bit surprised while browsing the list of nomial GDP per capita and GDP per capita at PPP to find out that Libya, a rather recluse country, is the richest of all North African countries, and even the Middle East if we except the Arabian Peninsula and Israel, with a GDP/capita even higher than Turkey or Romania. I suppose that this is due to a higher ratio of petrol per capita, given Libya's tiny population of 1.7 million, as opposed to 77.5 million in Egypt or 32.5 million in Algeria and 31.5 million in Morocco.

Almost as surprising is that Algerians are almost twice richer than Moroccans, despite more than 10 years of civil war that has only just about calmed down now.

I also didn't expect Egyptians to be the poorest - in fact I rather expected them toward the top...

It is also startling to see the difference between poor Yemen and the rest of the rich Arabian Peninsula.

Here is a comparative summary for nonimal GDP per capita (in USD) :

Qatar : 37,610
United Arab Emirates : 23,968
Kuwait : 19,559
Bahrain : 14,177
Saudi Arabia : 11,065
Oman : 10,436
---------
Lebanon : 5,829
Libya : 4,944
Turkey : 4,286
Tunisia : 2,848
Algeria : 2,655
Iran : 2,364
Morocco : 1,677
Syria : 1,308
Egypt : 1,111
Yemen : 524

For memo :

China : 1,272
India : 622

Here are the figures at PPP (i.e. adjusted to local prices), which close the gaps, and are supposedly more reliable :

Bahrain : 18,817
Kuwait : 16,066
Oman : 15,649
Saudi Arabia : 13,955
---------
Libya : 10,769
Lebanon : 5,930
Tunisia : 7,732
Iran : 7,594
Turkey : 7,503
Algeria : 6,799
