The Euronext already has branches in the UK and Portugal, and along with the and Deutsche Boerse, had planned a takeover bid of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) since early 2005. Deutsche Boerse had failed, leaving Euronext's takeover pending. A merger between the two could facilitate the deal.

Mergers won't stop indeed. But Euronext managed to surprise again by announcing that it could accept the $10bn takeover bid by the New York Stock Exchange, which would create the first trans-Atlantic stock exchange. Deutsche Boerse has since intensified its bid by looking for support from Euronext shareholders and European politicians.
