I was listening to the radio this morning and a news article came up on how French Prime Minister Guy Mollet proposed a union between France and the UK in 1956, and if that wasn't accepted for France to become a member of the Commonwealth and accept the Queen as head of State.

I wondered if it had worked, and if so how would Europe be today?

I also find the idea preposterous. Why would France and Britain be unified under a single monarchy ? The French would have rejected any monarchy in the 1950's, as they would now.

Sounds a bit crazy to me! Different countries they are with water between them an all!

Would have been interesting at any rate... but a failure waiting to happen imo.
