Songs in Italian

Anna Oxa (I think she is of Albanian origins) is one of my Favorite singers since her win in Sanremo 1978 with 'Un emozione da poco. Love her voice. This is my fovrite song Quando nasce un amore.......

Gianna Nannini...perhaps my favorite after Mina:

Ammandoti-Loving You

Loving you tires me, makes me empty inside
It's like laughing when you're crying
Loving you tires me, makes me sad
But what can you do, that's life
It's life, my life
Love me again, do it gently
For a year, a month, an hour, passionately
Loving you comforts me during the sleepless white nights
It brings back the old stories that went up in smoke
Loving you comforts me, makes me happy
What can you do, that's life
It's life, my life
Love me again, do it gently
For a year, a month, an hour just passionately
Love me again, do it gently
Just for an hour, passionately.

Ed.Perdutamente doesn't precisely mean passionately...it's sort of a combination, in this context, of passionately, desperately, in a way to bring loss of self. At least that's the closest I can get to it's meaning in English.

Here is another one of my old favorites that brings back so much nostalgia by Patti Bravo. This song 'La Bambola' (The doll) was featured in a sweet old movie (sorry cannot remember name) set up in Lampedusa (or Pantelleria cannot remember exactly)

Lucio Dalla, singer/songwriter:

Piazza Grande, dedicated to a homeless man who lives in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna, his native city. It's also an homage to the importance of the piazza to Italian society.
Piazza Grande

There are no saints paying for my lunch
on the benches in Piazza Grande,
and when I hunger for merchants like me, there aren't any.

I sleep on the grass and I have a lot of friends around me;
the lovers in Piazza Grande,
I know everything about their troubles and loves, wrong or not.
According to me, I, too, need caresses.
According to me, I, too, need to dream.
I haven't got a proper family
and my home is Piazza Grande
to the ones who believe in me I give love and take love from them, as much as I have.
There are no generous women for me,
I steal love in Piazza Grande,
and thank goodness there are no rascals like me here.
According to me, I, too, need caresses.
I'd have to pray to God.
But I'll never change my life,
my way, what I am is what I wanted

White sheets to cover us, I haven't got
under the stars in Piazza Grande,
and if life has no dreams, I have them and I'll give them to you.
And if there won't be anymore people like me
I'd like to die in Piazza Grande,
amid the cats who have no owner, like me

Caruso: I've posted it before, but I can't help myself. :) Here it's sung by the composer/librettist himself towards the end of his life. The voice was going, but the passion and authenticity was there. Nobody did it better, not Pavarotti, not Bocelli, not Lara Fabian. The English translation appears on screen.

I just happened to see it with Greek translation onscreen:

Attenti al Lupo-Beware of the Wolf
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Iufw9-9AQU

There is a small little house with
many small, colored windows
And there is a little woman with
two big eyes made for watching
and there is a little man
who always comes back late from work
and he has a small hat,
and in it he carries a dream to accomplish
and the more he thinks about it, the less he wants to wait
My sweet love, don't worry,
life is a chain
which sometimes hurts a bit
But look how calm I am
Even when I cross the woods
Sure that good is behind me
I'm still watching out for the wolf
Watch out! Watch out for the wolf!
Living together. Living together
Downstairs there is small field
where the cicadas raise a din
And a sweet and delicate smell surrounds us,
My love, summer has arrived
And we lay down and we make love
In the middle of this cicada sea
This delicate little love,
It is so big that I can fly
The more I think about it, the less I can wait
My sweet love, don't worry,
life is a chain
sometimes it hurts a bit
But look how calm I am
Even when I cross through the woods
with the help of the good Lord,
I will always beware of the wolf
Watch out! the wolf!

I love Ligabue,
Quella Che Non Sei: The One You Aren’t
An apt choice, I think, given a recent thread on this Board
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CDXw1cWmq4
(The one that you aren't ) (The woman you aren’t)
I have already seen you
you were in the middle of all the words that
you were never able to say.
You were in the middle of
a life that could have gone (somewhere) but
who knows where...
I’ve seen you play games with the mirror
and hurry to be grown-up
and then wanting to turn back
when you no longer can.

The one that you aren't
The one that you aren't, you’re not
but I’m here
and if it will be enough for you
The one that you aren't, you won't be
it will be enough for me.
There’s a cold place inside you
it’s the place no one has ever entered
The one that you aren't.
I have already seen you
you were in the middle of all of your excuses
without knowing for what.
You were in the middle of the person who says to you "choose: either whore or bride"
I have seen you embarassed by your mother
tear your surname apart

The one that you aren't
The one that you aren't, you’re not
but I’m here
and if it will be enough for you
The one that you aren't, you won't be
it will be enough for me.
There is a place inside you that you keep turned-off
it’s the place in which no one ever arrives
The one that you aren't.
I have seen you stay behind too much mascara
behind another hairstyle
you were behind a fear
that you never let go.

The one that you aren't
The one that you aren't, you’re not
but I’m here
and if it’s enough for you
The one that you aren't, you won't be
it will be enough for me.
There is a place inside you in which it is cold
it is the place in which no one has ever entered

Hai Un Momento Dio?-Do You Have a Moment, God?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqR02hSaP28

There’s a bit of traffic in my soul; I didn’t understand what time it is
The refrigerator’s empty but I want to talk…
Whether you’re an angel or a demon, I have three questions for you:
Who will buy Inter, where do you take me, and most importantly, why?
Because there has to be a reason, right?

Or maybe practical people understand life better

Do you have a minute, God?
Because I’m here, I’m here too
Do you have a minute, God?
Do either you or the ones who speak in your name have a moment for me?
I pay all my debts myself; if I break it I pay times three
How much do I have to pay to get an answer from you?
Come on, tell me, how much is it

You’re there but you won’t give me answers
You in your big beautiful coat, you don’t drink anything and I can’t feel you.
How is that possible. Why?
Because I do have something to believe in
Even though I can’t manage to remember what it is
Do you have a moment, God?
I know there’s a line, but do you have a moment for me?
Inside I’m always alone; you’re always alone too
What I feel, How I feel, What you feel, how you feel
They’ll never know
At least tell me if the journey is unique and if there’s a sun there
If you’re laughing, I won’t take offense,
that you’re not answering my questions
Or letting me wear your beautiful coat for a while
Do you have a moment, God?
Because I’m here and I’ll be here
Do either you or the ones who speak in your name have a moment for me?
Do either you or the ones who speak in your name have a moment for me?

Tiziano Ferro: The Difference Between Me and You-La differenza tra me e te
He's not my favorite, but I think he's at his charming best here...

I haven't fully understood it
You andme
One of us knows how to hurt, the other one not that much, but...
You and me
It's almost a negation

I get lost in the details and in the mess, you don't
I fear my past and your past but you don't
You and me
I'ts clear
And it seems so hard.

My life always makes me sleepless
It makes me see how obvious it is
The difference between you and me
And then you ask me how am I
And your smile takes away the agony and the questions
About being right or being wrong, to torture me, to ask me "why"

The difference between you and me
How are you?
Fine
How am I?
I don't know
You and me
One of us laughs at himself, the other one cries for what he is not
And I think that's a mistake

Ah, I have many doubts, a beer and a few friends
You have many questions, some of them dreadful, let me tell you
Me and you
It's elementary
Don't want to get out of here

My life always makes me sleepless
It makes me see how obvious it is
The difference between you and me
And then you ask me how am I
And your smile takes away the agony and the questions
About being right or being wrong, to torture me, to ask me "why"

If my life could be restarted from time to time
The uselessness of this insecurity
I wouldn't tell you about it
But if on a fine day I were leaning out to see life
And all the the sadness was already gone
I would come to you

And I think its beautiful
And I think its beautiful

A Duet with Laura Pausini: Vivimi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru78R2YTDEY

She has such an extraordinary instrument...I think it's time that she sang something other than love songs...they might not sellas well, but she certainly must have enough money by now.

Her popularity in the Spanish speaking New World, even among Hispanic Americans, is quite extraordinary, by the way. She releases Spanish language versions of all her songs almost as soon as the original Spanish versions.

Another old time favourite. Pazza Idea (Crazy Idea) Patty Bravo

My favorite among the current batch of young singers: Marco Mengoni

Non Me Ne Accorgo-I don't notice it
Direct link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KT6qLNDZ0

(By the way, I couldn't believe how many of my young male relatives (and not so young!) were sporting beards this summer. I think it's a very unfortunate style choice, at least when the man looks like Marco Mengoni. Nonsensical.)

Do you know that music is pain?
Do you know that music is noise?
You know what? I feel good
You know what? I don't feel good

You won't ask me for permission,
if it's allowed

I leave promises to time
I leave the certainties for you
The guitar on the bed,
the verses that you have never written

I won't ask for your permission,
I prefer to burn on my own,
than to give into you right now

Where are you? In what part of the world?
Or are you still here and I don't notice it
You will find the balance I'm looking for,
or you will find it in every doubt you are
I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to,
but how much are you in a hurry to understand what we are?

Only the noise is what is left for you,
me, that is not capable to give it a name
And your slippery heart,
I cannot do otherwise than skate skate on it

You, in a corner alone
and I don't recognize you

Where are you? In what part of the world?
Or are you still here and I don't notice it
You will find the balance I'm looking for,
or you will find it in every doubt you are
I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to,
but how much are you in a hurry to understand what we are?
To understand what we are
To understand what we are

Or are you still here and I don't notice it
You will find the balance I'm looking for,
or you will find it in every doubt you are
I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to,
but how much are you in a hurry?
You already know what we are

Very nice, Maleth :)

If we're going to talk about nostalgia...one of the first songs I ever learned to sing...Marina

I'm not the only one that still likes it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9PdEOTvuSY

Or, of course, Volare...

The original...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4IjJav7xbg

Dean Martin singing it...sort of defines suave, charming, and funny...and good looking, of course!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JEQIQmQa-c

Oh yes Marina is the party song!.....allegria :) Great arrangement and performance there in the piazza festival - enjoyed it thanks. So now it seems there is no stopping for the nostalgia songs......Im a couple of Months late but here is another that takes me through the time tunnel.

Nice one, Maleth...That clip came from an Andre Rieu concert in Cortona.

Andre Rieu gets a bad rap for dumbing music down, but I think his concerts are great fun. I'm particularly fond of that one in Cortona...I was there, and I absolutely loved it.

He did all the great classics, from Marina to Sono L'Italiano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ritzrYQTsQ
I've seen web chatter to the effect that some young Italians don't get why foreigners so like this song. Well, the Italians at the concert certainly enjoyed it, as do all the Italians I know....

to the Italian anthem...got choked up there...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hNfB-unpd0

to Mio Babbino Caro, which was even more emotional:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaQrgo2OZyY
Mr. Rieu's Italian is quite good...

to La Donna e Mobile and other selections from our operas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Taul3z3v_Q
He really shouldn't have been surprised that Italians like to sing along, or that many of us know the lyrics or at least the melodies to many of them even if we can't sing them! People also got emotional when he played Va Pensiero from Nabucco, (3:00) which I personally feel should be a sort of co-anthem.

to Once Upon A Time In The West:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf_KXyMaoB8

to the Godfather theme:

Lucky you for being there. Great music. These open air concerts are just fabulous. I have to say I really like Andre Rieu musical arrangements and general performance. (never heard of them before) Im not a huge summer fan but surely something positive to be able to have these concertos al fresco :)
