Songs in Italian

Ah, I had forgotten that one. :) So nice.

Do you remember Gabriella Ferri and "Tutti al mare", "Everyone to the sea"?

Great pictures of Italian "beach life" in this one, including a surprise at the end for anyone who thinks Italians are the same color year round! :)

I do love the "bagni"; it's such a civilized way of going to the beach, imo. I can rarely convince my American friends of that, however. Imagine, they want to be alone at the beach if possible! :)

They also like to "rough" it: sand sticking to your sun-screened body, miles to walk to the restrooms, drinks from the cooler (that you had to drag to the beach) that are warm by the time you drink them, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, then carting all that junk home in the car with your now sun burnt body glued to the seats, not to mention some shrieking kids in the back seat. YUCK! :)

Oh...I never heard this song before, but really like it and sound better with those summery images these oldies give such a wonderful feeling of days gone by :)

My kids absolutely loved the group dancing on the beach, particularly the funny ones. (They loved the beach and water volleyball too, and the various paddle boats they could take out, and the games room, and the pool...I could go on and on!) I can't find some of the old ones, but now as Italians are getting more into the internet world they are recording them. It's not just kids who join in either, and of course there were a lot of dances based on current hits, often with a Latin American beat.

Here's "Maria Gallina"...Maria the chicken. :)

This one is great too: "Pulcino Pio". It requires a lot of coordination to do this one.

taste of salt, taste of the sea :)

I guess the uploader has a "thing" for Stefania Sandrinelli. :) I always like her too; not as obvious as some other Italian actresses, but lovely, I think.

Anyway, it didn't load properly for me, so if you don't mind, this is the direct link:

Nek's (and assorted random Italians') cover of the great Mina hit...Se Telefonando. Nek's version is nice, but he can't match Mina's. I posted a translation at the end. The words are simple. It's the Ennio Morricone music and the singing of it that make this song an icon.

"I've never understood why this isn't popular in the English speaking world. It has all the bells and whistles of an awesome Phil Spector production. The chorus and key changes (I think that's what I'm hearing) are incredible. Plus, most English speakers swear that Italian sounds beautiful even if you don't understand it. This could have easily been a number one hit in the U.S. and U.K. back in the day if it were marketed correctly. I wish somebody would upload the live performance that was taken down. So beautiful."

If you can, put the volume way up. :) I often play Mina while cruising in the car. With this one you can really belt it out!

Se Telefonando-If, by calling you...

The wonder of the night
wide opened on the sea
surprised us when we were still strangers.
You and I.

Then,in the darkness your hands
were suddenly on my hands,
it happened too quickly this love
affair of ours.

If by calling you
I could say “goodbye”
I would call you.

If by seeing you again
I could be sure that you are not suffering,
I would see you again.

If by looking into your eyes
I could say “enough”
I would look at you.

But I don’t know how to explain to you
that our new-born love
is already over.

If by calling you
I wanted to say goodbye
I would call you.

If by seeing you again
I could be sure that you are not suffering,
I would see you again.

If by looking into your eyes
I could say “enough”
I would look at you.

But I don’t know how to explain to you
that our new-born love
is already over.

I used the lyrics from "Lyrics Translate" but adjusted them a bit.

Tuscan singer Nada: "Ma Che Freddo Fa" - How Cold It Is. I only wish. :)

"In winter the tired sun goes to bed early.
It can’t take it anymore
It can’t take it anymore.
The night now descends
with its cold hands upon me.
But it's so cold.
But it's so cold.
A caress would be enough
for a heart of a girl.
Maybe, then, yes - I would love you.

What is life
without love?
It is a lone tree
with no more leaves.
And the wind,
like a cold wind,
that makes the leaves fall,
it knocks my hopes down
but what is this life
if you miss it?

I feel like a butterfly
that that doesn't fly to flowers anymoremore
that flies no more
that flies no more.
I am burnt from the fire
of your great love
that has already faded
but it's so cold
but it's so cold.
You, boy, have disappointed me.
You stole from my face
that smile that wont' return.

What is life
without love?
It is a lone tree
with no more leaves.
And the wind rises
like a cold wind
that makes the leaves fall,
it knocks my hopes down
but what is this life
if you are missing?

You don't love me anymore.
It's cold.
What is life
if you are missing?
You don't love me anymore.
It's cold."

She was so impossibly young when this came out.

Io di Notte Sono Qui-Al Bano. "At night I'm here", or At night I'm still here.

It's one of those great, old, "slow dance" songs. :)

"At night I'm here
and think once again of you.
And it seems to me that
you are near me.

At night I'm here
without asking myself why.
I'm thinking of my life
that is so bound to you.

I'm a man like those
who don't know to forget
and because of that I still hope that
you'll come back to me."

This version with Greek subtitles has nice visuals:

What a voice. Al-Bano as in Romina e Al Bano?

Yes. Really a remarkable voice when he was in his prime. I like the things he did alone a lot more than the duets with Romina, although they were fun, like Felicita' which I'll link to below.

First, though, listen to this...good, yes?

Nel Sole-In the Sun...
"[h=2]In the sun[/h]Why
but why does tonight
have the longest hours
that never pass
But why does every minute
last an eternity

When the sun returns
and in the sun I come to you
I become a different man
and can no longer do anything without you
When the sun returns
and in the sun I come to you
My love, my love run towards me
and the night will never come again

But why
but why are my thoughts
always the same
and never change
But why does silence
continue to talk to me of you

When the sun returns
and in the sun I come to you
My love, my love run towards me
and the night will never come again

Felicita' just isn't in the same league, for me, anyway. In America they call it bubble gum music. Plus, I'm not a fan of her voice. I'm in the minority, however. Sixty one million hits for that versus under a million for the others.

Same, I really like the old solo songs though, never heard of them before. I was never really fond of him singing with Romina (although they still bring some kind of nostalgia) but were to poppish for me.

Very cute...the song as well as the singers :). Simona Molinari (Italian) and Peter Cincotti (Italian American) in "In cerca di te": I stroll the city streets in search of you. Two Neapolitans separated for generations who found each other. :) The lyrics make it sound very heavy, lugubrious, almost, but it's not like that at all.

"Through the city's streets I walk alone
passing through the crowd that does not know
that does not see my pain
looking for you, dreaming of you, that I no longer have.
I look at every face and it's not you
every voice I hear isn't you
Where are you lost love?
I'll see you again, I'll find you, I'll follow you.
I try in vain to forget
you never forget your first love
there is written a name, a single name at the bottom of my heart
I have recognized you, and now I know that you are my love,
my true love, my great love.

Through the city's streets I walk alone

Passing through the crowd that does not know
that does not see my pain
looking for you, dreaming of you, that I no longer have.

This is from another great talent who died too young...of suicide at 29...Luigi Tenco. I love all his songs...who knows how many more wonderful ones he might have given us if he hadn't given in to his despair? It seems so senseless...young, talented, a marvelous voice, beautiful, in love. I wonder if there was some genetic component? There is some mystery regarding the death of his father at a young age as well.

Well, here are two of his great songs...Lontano, Lontano or Far Away, Far Away and Vedrai, You'll See...I've also provided the translations. I quoted Othello recently in another thread : "She loved me for the dangers I had passed, and I did love her that she did pity them". This is part of Tenco's appeal, I think. There's nothing quite so seductive sometimes as sorrow and suffering.

"Far away

Far away, far away in time
something in someone else's eyes
will make you think of my own eyes
those eyes that loved you so much

Far away, far away in the world
in a smile on the lips of someone else
you will find my shyness
that you loved to make fun of.

Far away, far away in time
the expression on a face glimpsed by chance
will remind you of my face
that sad look you used to love so much

Far away, far away in the world
you will be with someone else
suddenly, without rhyme or reason
you will find yourself talking about me

... a love now too far away.."

Such simple words, but sung so searingly...

Vedrai, Vedrai...You'll see, You'll see

"When I return home in the evening
I barely can even talk
please don't look at me with that tenderness
as if I were a disappointing child
Yes, I know. This surely is not the life
that you dreamed one day the two of us we'd share

You'll see, you'll see,
You'll see that it will change
maybe it won't be tomorrow
but one day it will all change

You'll see, you'll see,
I am not finished yet
I can't tell you how or when
but one day it will all change

I'd rather see you crying,
accusing me of failing you
then see you always react so tenderly
so accepting of what little I give you
when I think of you, I despair
because I just can't give you anymore.

You'll see, you'll see,
You'll see that it will change
maybe it won't be tomorrow
but one day it will all change

You'll see, you'll see,
I am not finished yet
I can't tell you how or when
but one day it will all change"

Claudio Baglioni - E tu (con testo)

youtube;_akV1uW09l4]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_akV1uW09l4

It sounds good in Spanish too.

If you're up for a little nostalgia and haven't run across it yet...here he is performing when impossibly young...and thin! His hair must have weighed more than the whole rest of his body! :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su9u6-RWdwk

"E adesso non ci sei che tu, soltanto tu, sempre tu"...I like this very much as well...a summer love...Accoccolati ad ascoltare il mare, quanto tempo siamo stati senza fiatare...seguire il tuo profilo con un dito...e baciarti le labbra, con un filo d'erba...the English translation just doesn't cut it.

Here he is singing Questo Piccolo Grande Amore at San Remo...and accompanying himself on piano. God, I loved him. I've added the translation for those who don't know Italian. He and his wife were like a golden couple.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78vsr_blqqI

I can't do any better than this...it's from Lyrics Translate:

"Her thin T-shirtso tight, to the point that I was imagining everything
and her childlike air
I never told her, but I was crazy about it

And clear summer nights
the sea, the games, the fairies
and the fear and desire to be naked
a kiss on salty lips
a fire, a few laughs
and making love down by the lighthouse
I really love you...I swear I love you...
I love you, I love you truly...

And she
she looked at me with suspicion
Then she smiled and held onto me so tightly
And I
I never understood anything
but I see now and I can’t get it out of my mind
that she...

She was
a little big love
just a little big love
nothing more than this...nothing more...
I miss her to death
I miss her little big love
now that I would know what to say
now that I would know what to do
now that
I want a little big love...

That strange walk of hers
that I’d have recognized anywhere
She used to tell me "you're a hopeless case"
but I never believed it

And long breathless races
towards fallen stars
and hands always anxious about the forbidden things
and the off-key songs
we shouted to the sky up there
"Whoever reaches that wall first ..."
I'm not sure if I really love you...
I’m not...I'm not sure...

And she
stopped talking all of a sudden
but I could clearly see the pain on her face
And I
I don’t know how long she cried
And only now am I realizing
that she ...

She was
a little big love
just a little big love
nothing more than this... nothing more...
I miss her to death
I miss her little big love
now that I would know what to say
now that I would know what to do
now that
I want a little big love"

Giorgia: Come Saprei

A very provocative song, I think, even if there's nothing explicit about it or the video...

It really should be I would like to know, or I would know, but I don't think that's the way it would be said in English.

How can I know
How can I understand the man you are.

I want to understand.
I want to discover
The fantasies you want made real
I would reach inside
Deep inside of you
Deep into your silences
Becoming more excited
Ever more excited
I want to know how
To astound the man you are
When you're there
And you don't know how or which
path to take
I want to know how
To attract your eyes
Attaching them to mine
Excited, ever more excited

In a solitary world
Why don't you stay with me a while
I want to know how
To love you in a way
No one else would ever know how to do

I want to know how
to be the one who will succeed
You don't know it yet
But I will give
My whole soul to it
You are my life
To live now
I want to know how
I wish our connection was already
Skin to skin
I want there to be sparks
Every time I'm with you
I want to know how
To love you in a way
No one else can ever know how to do

I want to know how
To be the one who succeeds
You don't know yet
But I will give
My whole soul

You are my life
To live
I would know how

How much love there is
Ready to explode in me
Yes, now
I want to know

She tugs at my heart, Giorgia, not just because of her wonderful voice, but because of the way she looks, and that beautiful smile.
