I would like to know what the ancient writers referred to by the terminology ending in ae.
example
Bastanae
Sarmatae
venedae
vandalae
keltae etc etc

I think like the term Sarmatae was used to bracket certain tribes with similar cultures together, because they did not know all the tribes or ...something else..........The Sarmatae as history shows comprised of at least 4 tribes, the Iazyges, the Roxolani, the Aorsi and the Siraces.

The term also reflects geographical areas, like the Carpathian mountains was initially Montes Bastanae, then became Montes Sarmatae

Any ideas or links would be helpful to me.

the term -ae is clear grammatical according the form of prural
in Greek is called Κλιση klise and are 3 types
in plural number if the noun ends in -ης -es -is in single then in plural goes -αι -ae
if in single is -ος -os then in plural is -oi -οι -ii
if in single is -ων -on then is plural goes -ες -es

example
Single Plural
Γαλατης (Galat-es-is, Gaul) Γαλαται (Galatae)
Iταλος (Ιtalos) Iταλοι (Ιταλοι Italoi)
Μακεδων (Makedon) Μακεδονες (Makedones)
Saxon Saxones
Θραξ (Thrax, thracian) Θρακαι (Thrakae, Thracians)
but if I use Θρακας the is Θρακες (thracians)
Ιλλυριος (Illyri-os) Ιλλυριοι (Illyrioi ->Illyrii)
Καρχηδονιος (Carthago) Καρχηδονιοι (Karchedonii)

so Roxolanos ->Roxolani Ρωξολανος ->Ρωξολανοι in Latin Roxolani
Siraces is Like Thracian if Single is Siracas the Plural is Sirakes if single is Siracos the is Siracoi Latin Siraci

the ae is the Greek αι which even in Greek has a sound of ε e as in they

so Vandalae is not correct at least with Greek grammar it should be Vandaloi
but many times we see ending in -os in single also as ending in -ης (according dialect of author)
Vandalos can become Vandalis cause it is imported word,

It is clear a Grammatical ending that shows plural number,

So mount Sarmatae means mountain of Sarmateans , ορος Σαρματων
nomitive Σαρμαται Sarmatae
possesive Σαρματων Sarmaton
dative Σαρματιοις Sarmatiis
accusative Σαρματες Sarmates

all endings in plural number are -ae (αι) -i (οι) -ii ioi(ιοι) and -es (ες)
