What music are you listening to?

First video aired on MTV. I posted it on YouTube with permission from VJ Mark Goodman and Universal Music Group. This is the original music video, ladies and gentlemen. Unfortunately never to be shown again on the air, so watch and hear it now while you can!

Yeah when MTV was about music and not about morons. I think mtv should change its name to "Stupid People".

The best thing about MTV is beavis and butthead. When my dad caught me watching it when I was 8, he took me outside and smacked the hell out of me. Here's a video of them watching slayer. I own most of their good albums...Show No Mercy, south of heaven, haunting the chapel, Hell Awaits, seasons in the abyss and divine intervention! Tom Araya rules!

Bird On A Wire:

This is the original Leonard Cohen performance of his own song. It's wonderful...a song by a grown up for grown ups. I've also provided a link to the cover by Johnny Cash, which is, imo, equally good in its own way. Johnny's diction is better, or the video is better, so all the words come through clearly, important for all Leonard Cohen "songs", as they're essentially poetry put to music.

MTV was an interesting concept / idea. It is just too bad that corporation, fame and greed had to destroy such a great idea and a new frontier for the Western word and entertainment. Hope you all enjoyed this original first video (vintage) of Video Killed the Radio Star. It is a privilege. (You may not be able to find it anywhere, unfortunately.)

BTW, this was given to me personally, as a present, by original MTV Video-jockey Mark Goodman on VHS. (had to transfer and burn to DVD and then CD-ROM.) He no longer works at Viacom I don't believe, but he persuaded UMG (Universal Music Group.) to grant me privileges to the copyright.

Here is the first day of MTV, live. Unfortunately, you will not find "Video Killed the Radio Star" on it (it's cut for some odd) but you should see Mark there in the beginning. He was the main host VJ from 1981-1987. ) I just had to post this video on there, because it was a must.

(edit, nevermind, I just found a video with Video Killed the Radio Star. Someone posted it 19 days ago on the 31st of July, cool. I hope Viacom gave them the OK to post it. It would be sad if YouTube pulls it again.)

You had a bad day...

There is wedding at the neighborhood at the town I am now,
the boy's origin is from Pontus, that migrate at 1923,

typical song in most of their rituals, a kind of anthem is a song from Οινοη Oinoe Unye in Turkish about a village called Tsambasi ceybasi

the former's origin is from kappadokia, his mother did not know Greek until she reached Greece at 1923,
Kazantzidis at the decades from 1950-1990 is consider more than a singer, rather a teacher,
all his song are mostly education, on how to speak, to love, to cry, to sing, etc
even today is very poppular among working class, especially heavy workers,
a kind of teacher on how and what is worker, his demands, and his obligation,

I just wanted to share this sounds that are in my neighborhood with you,

ΩΠΑΑ

the song is about a fire that happened to the village at early 1900, which was a great mountain resort and passage from sea to inland, so a great commercial center,
a total disaster, and at the end as the teacher says, all poor and rich, they shit down together and they cry

I appreciate the post, Yetos. These kinds of tragedies spare no one, right? They teach people how much alike they really are...

I couldn't understand the lyrics, but I could hear the pain in his voice.

I very much like songs the best which capture universal human feelings, with no artificial divisions between rich or poor, or ethnicities...

This is also a song about working men and the difficulties they face...the seamen of Liguria. It's called Creuza de Ma, or sea lanes, and it's sung in Genovese dialect by Fabrizio De Andre, one of our greatest singer song-writers. If you don't see the English subtitles on screen, click on cc.

well the previous song is difficult for me to transalet,
it has also Turkish and Persian words,

but the bellow its ok
only as every translation by a non expert will lose a lot,

it is a man's song, a man that feels the responsibilities of his life,

the lyrics in Greek are at the publications info

in English as I can translate

All my life is a responsibility
that 'takes' all, and gives nothing
All my life is a furnace(kiln)
that I have fall in, and braise me,

All my life is a foolishness
that is my only fortune (belongings-substance)
All my life is a sacrifice
having no purpose, neither meaning

All my life is a cigarette
that I do not like, yet I smoke it
and when comes to butt, a treat to Charos (libation to deat's ferryman)
for when the time come, and happen accidently to meet him (ferryman has been payed by my life's butt)

an alternative translation

My whole life is a responsibility
it takes everything from me, it gives nothing,
my whole life is furnace
in which I have fallen and which slowly roasts me.

My whole life is a nonsense
and my only property
my whole life is a sacrifice
which has nor goal, nor meaning

My whole life is a cigarette,
which I don't fancy, yet I smoke it
when the cigarette butt become a treat to death,
when the time is up, I bum him off (for a cigarette).

the performer
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelios_Kazantzidis

the song writer
https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Άκης_Πάνου

both are if not the best, surely among the topten ever since modern Greece exist, beloved by common people artists

Last edited:
kazantzidis was married for a short time with the top 'lady' and Diva of Greek female performers, (few knows what happened to Australia)
the one that was like teacher to many girls at 60's till 80's,
Marinella, some probably know her by singing Grecani songs from S Italy,

infos about her
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marinella

the best perfomance that even today no Greek female singer dares to sing, cause it is consider not only impossible but also unholly
is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BtCDF4avpw

lyrics are here,

Marinella always use to sing about the pain of a women, and to be a 'lady', a perfect morale female,
even today Marinella's song are loved by women, as the woman who stand and fight with the correct female way.
Although many criticise her as too excessive.

the most poor song for her abilities, as also outside her style and philosophy
was the 1974 Eurovision contest,
Marinella was the first Greek performer ever in Eurovision contest
'a bit of wine, a bit of sea, and my boyfriend'

@Yetos,

So, perhaps she was sort of your Mina? This is from around the same time: 1969

Non Credere: Don't Believe (It or Her)

The English translation appears on screen.

best song ever : Andrea Bocelli - Con Te Partirò (San Remo)

Actually, perhaps the Greek singer is closer to Mia Martini? I like, and have posted Minuetto, but this one, "Gli Uomini non Cambiano" or Men Don't Change, is perhaps her "rawest" song. Well, that and "Cumme".

I found a version that has the English translation on screen. It's not great, but better than nothing. I should do one myself.

Enough with old Italian songs, even if they're sung by Mia Martini...for anyone into blues-rock and especially blues-rock guitar, one of the absolute best...
Joe Bonamassa...

If you're unfamiliar with him, he was one of those child prodigies, opening for B.B. King when he was only 12 years old!

"Just Got Paid", at the Apollo, London...Is there anybody cooler? No, there isn't. :)

Hahaha

from modern Greek music artist I like noone,
all of them are industry made, and suddenly they are 'excaveted' at show like talent or voice,
and music industry is pushing them and controls even their weighth,

the latest 2 greek phenomena are 2 women,
but one is not Greek, only the name

the other remained still a talented perfomrmer.
she is fantastic, but I expect more from her,

anyway rap and new kinds of music, just change our aisthetics,
modern products of music, at least in Greece, are empty, without soul,
just hits, beats, and again and again,
great performs of old music, still impress me more, but not the new beat-hit like style,
especially thessaloniki and Makedonia which until 90's had her own scene and was ahead in Rock and new wave style in Greece today seems like not to exist,
we hear more old songs at cafes and sing them at tavernas, the only new is from abroad, the hits/beats from USA and glamour style.

last decades in greece, we are facing depreciation,
and that reflect to music, which today is either stupid lyrics, either ironic sarcastic lyrics,

anyway I think I will start a thread about Greek music through centuries,
starting from Seikilos and Mesomedes or orfeus.

Good morning. Did the children always be late for school? -Did they not finish their breakfast?-Are you for some reason upset? ZEUS THUNDERBOLTS!!!
