Yes and to add to that, there have been some African Americans whom wrote some blogs on 23andme asking about their Ydna originating from Europe. The 23andme's community's common theory is that the European DNA came from Slave-owners; usually via the Slave owner's reletives getting frisky or via the Thomas JeffersonxSally Hemings effect.

I've got zero African DNA but I have matches with lighter colored Afro-Americans on Ancestry. I also have documentation of southern slave owners in the tree.

You can usually tell if Afro-Americans are heavily mixed by their significantly lighter skin tone than recent African immigrants. Some people are hard to "guestimate" based on looks but in my experience the "mixed" Afro-Americans are easy to spot.

As for physiology, the slaves were sometimes "selectively" bred for stronger physical traits. The American south turns out inordinately high numbers of professional athletes.
