Since I'm already a Helix customer, I procured Insitome (Neanderthal chapter) for $29.99. Moreover, my results were ready in 5 minutes, since my DNA is already sequenced. They will be rolling out with other chapters that will be avaliable for purchase in the future.

Below are screen caps from my results. According to Insitome, I am 1.2% Neanderthal (National Geographic-Helix had me at 1.4% :unsure:)

Moreover, they tell you what Neanderthal traits you have inherited, and which are human. They also tell you what specific gene you have acquired from admixture.

I literally have the mind of a Neanderthal! :LOL:

Here's a list of the genes the test has revealed to me. I have also provided links on information for each.

There were two Neanderthal genes in the test that I couldn't find information on (Haplotype III, and Haplotype IV). If anyone could provide it to me, it would be much appreciated. I'd like to spend time reading up on all of these genes, and figure out what they really mean.

Found something interesting regarding these two genes. They were inherited by admixture with Denosivian. Apparently, this gene was developed to withstand cold areas in the Arctic. Today, nearly 100% of Greenland Inuit have WARS2, and it is found in lower frequency with Modern Europeans, and Asians.

Perhaps it comes from western Neanderthals intermixing with eastern Neanderthals (Denosivian), prior to intermixing with Modern Homo sapiens.

Or perhaps it has something to do with my eastern and/or northeastern European autosomal admixture.

Furthermore, I learned this from the "Genius match" from NG. The paternal-lineage that went on to become haplogroup R1a/R1b took a turn into Asia, prior to Europe, back when it was M207. They probably picked up some admixture with the Eastern Neanderthal (Denosvian). I would like to hear from someone with more knowledge about this lineage, in regards to my hypothesis.

I haven't delved into the 14 Neanderthal genes associated with intelligence yet. But apparently, TANC1 has a lot to do with visual learning.

I usually found myself to be very bored in school as a child. My teachers often complained that I wouldn't "sit still", in class. Nevertheless, I always liked learning, on my own terms. I guess I found grammar school to be very under-stimulating. I had very old teachers, and this was back in the early 90s too. I'm sure a lot has changed.

I would guess that there are thousands genes regulating brain functions, architecture, neuronal connection and speed, etc. One allele, Neanderthal or not, won't change much in most cases.

I don't know how well this works as a general rule. You only need to inherit one copy of the faulty allele to have Huntington's disorder

In this case we are talking about working allele from a very close cousin, and it worked fine in humans for thousands of years. The point was not to expect a dramatic improvement in brain function. Possible but unlikely.

Ah, that's unfortunate.

I hope scientists produce a more rigorous study on this subject in the future.
 
After reading further in-dept into the test results, I find the descriptions for the genes to be dubious.

For example, it says I have Human muscle growth and development. Yet the description says the gene DMD is a result of Neanderthal admixture. Does this mean, I don't have the DMD gene? Or even though it's a Human version, it was spawned out of admixture between Neanderthals and Humans?

The same goes for all of the descriptions that say "Human version". They say they're a result of admixture with Homo Sapiens and Neanderthals or Denosivans.

Yeah, i guess what makes it a human version is the fact that it's at least partially human since its a result of mixing between humans and Neanderthals/Denisovians...but is there/was there a purely human version?

Here's the reply from Insitome.

if a trait lists you as the "human" version, it means you did not have the Neanderthal version of the trait (in science terms called a haplotype), and it was not the product of admixture. Whether Human or Neanderthal version, it is still the same DMD gene, and there are small differences in the DNA that allow us to identify ancestries. Genes listed in the bottom of the descriptions indicate which genes were tested. Thanks, and sorry for the delay in this reply.

Cool results! Once again, we are very similar. Interesting how NG had us both at 1.4%, and Insitome has us both at 1.2%

I guess, we can say its within the 1.3% range. Nevertheless, Insitome is prioritized for neanderthal admixture, so I would be more inclined to believe them a bit more.
 
Spencer Wells of the Genographic Project is involved with Insitome.
Hopefully all tests are performed with High Standard.

1.3% is the average amount for the helix NG test. I wonder what Insitome considers to be the average Neanderthal DNA. Maybe I should message them for the answer.

Edit:

I sent them an e-mail regarding the questions about their methods of scaling, and what they use as their averages, for Neanderthal Admixture, vs the National Geographic test.

Looking into the genetics behind the body's metabolism is the next app Insitome is going to release eventually. It's suppose to assess how food our ancestors ate, contributed to how our bodies' work. I hope this will give some insight into ancient human origins from the paleolithic to the iron age.
