Introduction

Braunfels Castle was first erected in 1246 as a defensive fortress against the Counts of Nassau. Expanded between the 15th and 17th centuries, the castle suffered a lot during Thirty Years' War, changing hands seven times between 1621 and 1641.

Following the Romantic movement, Braunfels was remodelled in the neo-Gothic style in 1880. The painting gallery has works by Dutch and Flemish Masters, including Jan van Eyck.

Opening Hours & Admission

The castle is open daily from April to October, and on weekends and public holidays from November to March. Visits are by guided tours only, starting at 11:00 am. On Sundays hourly tours start from 10:00 am.

Admission costs 7 € for adults and 3.5 € for students, 2.5 € for children aged 5 to 10 years old, and free under 5 years old.
