The ancient Phoenicians were known to be culturally and technologically advanced. They were also great traders, explorers, and builders of colonies. The Great Temple and palace of Solomon were built by Phoenician architects using Pheonecian cedar. Accodring to an Egyptian account, the Phoenicians circumnavigated Africa to open trade routes to India and China. According to legend, a Phoenician Kadmos transferred the alphabet to pre-classical Greece that had lost the art of writing, the older pictographic-syllabic writing systems of Linear A-B. Several stone tablets with inscriptions resembling Phoenician scripts and Punic scripts (Carthagian variant of Phoenician) have been found in North and South Americas. Some of the claims about the lost tribe of the Hebrews might sound far-fetched, but the Pheonician-looking tablets bearing inscriptions that can be deciphered in the Phoenician tongue (acc. to one specialist) raises the interesting question whether the Phoenicians or Carthagians crossed the Atlantic in the classical period and built colonies in the Americas.

I used to have two photos, but cannot find the link at the moment. Will add when I find them again.
