Let's note that these old lyrics speak of the From the Meuse River (passing through North-eastern France, Belgium and the Netherlands) to the Neman River (in Lithuania), as in the 19th century German speakers were more widely spread from East to West than they are nowadays. Alsace and Lorraine in France and Eastern Belgium once belonged to the German 'Holy Roman Empire'. Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) was once one of the biggest German-speaking city in the world. It was where famous German philosopher Immanuel Kant was born and lived all his life.
