Romanian piggies can be thankful to EU officials. Since Romania joined the EU, its inhabitants won't be able to slaughter their swines in their backyards for Xmas anymore, due to the EU's animal-welfare rules.

The pig-killing traditionally takes place on 20th December, and the meat is left untouched until Christmas.

Interestingly, the new prohibition is causing a lot of upset amongst Romanians, who are fondly attached to their bloody tradition.

This pig slaughtering eerily reminds of two other traditions of eastern Mediteranean origin, the Jewish sacrifice of a lamb or kid at Korban Pesach, and the Muslim sacrifice of a sheep or cow at Eid ul-Adha.

Muslims in Europe are well-known for illegally slaughtering animals at their homes for such occasion (see article).

Naturally, there are more pressing issues to be tackled in Romania, so that the EU won't have the time or money to control the 4.5 million farms in Romania on 20th December.
