This is some worrying news, in my opinion far worse than 9/11 or the current financial crisis. The amount of unsecured nuclear waste sent to the bottom of the Mediterranean sea by the Mafia over decades could simply kill off most life in the Mediterranean and make the sea too dangerous for swimming.

This time the Italian Mafia is not "just" (feel the sarcasm) endangering the life of millions of people in Naples by burning carcinogenous waste over Italy's most densely populated region. The problem is international and will cause cancers in hundreds of millions of tourists bathing in the Mediterranean.

Not only is this an environmental disaster on an unprecedented scale for Europe (worse than Chernobyl), even if measures are taken right away it might already cause cancer in millions of people who have bathed in the Mediterranean over the last 20 years (surely over half of all Europeans). This is bad news indeed. We are not talking about a minor leakage at a nuclear plant here, but radioactive waste travelling freely in our most popular holiday spot.

France 24 : Authorities find radioactive waste ship sunk by mafia

France 24 said:
Italian authorities have found a wreck with over 120 barrels of radioactive waste around 28 kilometres from the coast of Calabria in southern Italy. A local prosecutor said the Cunsky was one of 32 toxic ships sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean.
...
Sebastiano Venneri, vice president of the environmental group Legambiente, said former members of the 'Ndrangheta mafia have said that the crime syndicate was paid to sink ships with radioactive material for the last 20 years.

Mafia accused of sinking ship full of radioactive waste off Italy

Telegraph said:
A former mobster, Francesco Fonti, claimed that the 360ft-long ship is just one of dozens sunk by the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta syndicate.

He told the authorities the vessel's name is the Cunsky and that he used explosives to sink it about 20 miles off Calabria in the south-west in 1992.

A robot submarine has been used to inspect a shipwreck in the Mediterranean which the Mafia turncoat claimed was sunk after being loaded with around 100 barrels of radioactive waste.
...
A regional prosecutor, Bruno Giordano, said that if the exploration of the wreck does produce evidence of toxic waste, authorities will start a hunt for more sunken vessels. They believe there could be up to 32 in Italian waters.
