Bronze Age.

In late November 2002 appeared on the lower terrace of the town of Castellón Alto, province of Granada (Andalusia) Spain, a partially buried with mummified human remains. This is the grave 121, an oval floor den dug into the slope of the terrace within a dwelling. Was sealed with hewn planks of pine (Pinus nigra), over which spread a layer of mud and prefaced a masonry wall. This seal has been isolated outside the burial, allowing no leakage of land, which joined the big dry environment favored mummification and dehydration.

The remains belong to an adult male between 27 and 29 and a boy about 4 years old.

For the excavation of the tomb was built a house on it, as a small field laboratory to help preserve environmental conditions. Conservation efforts were made of various materials before removal. Work on the documentation of the burial, previously demanded the dismantling of the top of the den and front of the terrace to have free space to allow easy access to the grave.

It also preserves the remains of the beard and body hair, still attached to pieces of skin were recovered several pieces of linen fabric and wool and linen prints some bones and joints of the hands.

Covering the head, there are the remains of a textile hat. Leaning on the arm and left leg, someone placed before sealing the tomb an adze delicately attached to the Wizard of oak wood. Perhaps undone just before the funeral, which had been a long braid is covering the left arm. The rest of his hair was combed with other central braid and a ponytail. The outfit was completed with a knife, three counts of necklace and several rings. Behind her, right in the mouth of the niche, appears four-piece outfit ceramic skull of the infant and even locks of hair combed forward and two bronze bracelets. Closed all three pine planks that had been perfectly squared for another surprise visitor. Finally, a medium-tight stone walls that made the miracle of conservation ....

There is no doubt that cultural activities proposed by the City more attractive has been the visit to the tomb where the call came "Galera mummy 'found in November 2002 at the site of the Castellón Alto Argaric, either Cultural Interest in 1996.

Apart from exceptional place visited, only in very rare cases the general public has had occasion to go ", the activity had a value to be the guide of the visit Manolo Magan, the technician who took part in the excavation of the burial and who was commissioned and is now responsible for its preservation.

Naturally, more than fifty people attended the charm of this special place, where Magán recounted the events of the finding, it must be remembered that of Galera is the second oldest European mummy-and the difficulties for the conservation of some residues about 3,500 years old, among whom was the hair of the individual, considerable remains of his own skin, tissue fragments were his clothes, etc. The mummy has arrived in such good shape today because the carrier in which it found was sealed with black pine hewn planks on which was spread a layer of mud and prefaced a masonry wall. This seal, which prevented the leakage of land, coupled with the extremely dry environment, favored mummification and dehydration.

To complete the course, participants finally visited the Municipal Archaeological Museum, which exhibits the real mummy in a very special urn, part of which was made with elements designed by NASA for use in the sealing of their rockets.
