Mock Taj Mahal draws crowds (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3039601.stm)

Hundreds of visitors have been flocking to enjoy a replica of the Taj Mahal in the southern city of Madras.

[The original Taj] took 22 years to build and is said to have been worked on by 20,000 craftsmen and labourers.

"Our one took 22 days to put up," said Salim's brother Wasim Tamimi, chuckling.

"We used 300 labourers, carpenters and artisans."

And in contrast to the original's marble, inlaid with precious stones, this value-for-money Taj has been constructed out of polystyrene, plywood, plaster-of-paris and aluminium foil.

Thirty metres tall, it occupies about half the land area of the real Taj.

Compare it with the real Taj in Agra '(on my site) (http://maciamo_india.tripod.com/traveltoindia/id13.html), Uttar Pradesh, built between 1631 and 1653.

Note that there already was a Taj Mahal replica, built in 1679 near Auragabad, Maharashtra. It is called Bibi-Ka-Maqbara. Here is the pic I took on my visit. It's undeniable that the new chep copy looks better than the old replica (not entirely in marble), but neither can even remotely compete with the original.
