This thread is dedicated to jazz in Europe. Feel free to comment and add bands or artists you know, as I know much less about this than I would like.
First off, there is gypsy French guitarist Django Reinhardt, possibly the most famous European jazz musician. He started the musical current known as "gypsy jazz", which combined Swing, Bal-Mussette and French Folk music:
Of the same current was French violinist Stéphane Grappelli:
Jewish Polish musician Ady Rosner is also a well-known jazz musician from the 30s, unfortunately he was subject to persecution by the Nazi regime.
There was also a large amount of "cool jazz" in Europe: of highlight are, for example, Swedish saxofonist and piano player Lars Gullin:
Jumping to the 60s, Free Jazz gained a foothold in Europe, with well-known figures such as Peter Brötzmann:
In 1966, he founded the Globe Unity Orchestra :
Also of much note is Albert Mangelsdorff:
We also have pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach:
Finally, to end this small sample, there is the more recent clarinet player Theo Jörgensmann:
