I know there are alot of Europeans on this website uselly my threads are long and informative and about genetics but this time. I am asking a question about world relations. I want to know what Europeans think of America. From what i have see. You guys dont like us or just dont care. Maybe u feel we stole ur thunder because we are really descended from Europe culturally. We where orginalley just a colonies of England then we became the most powerful nation in the world and everyone is following our form of government. well i guess our type of government was based on European philosophers in the 1600's and 1700's.

It is a very beautiful country with wonderful landscapes
everyone is following our form of government
Note exactly, everyone want to be free, it is the naturel evolution of human society no?

America's government system came out of philosophers in europe during the enlightment period. Americas founding fathers also had many of their own ideas for how a government works. Then after America everyone started to do it. America was the first country to in a way follow what the european philosophers said then Europe did it after america.

European (EU) governing philosophy / ies is / are not exactly what you have in the U.S. European ideals may be very similar to America's, but that's it.

that defintley mainly from the U.K. but there is still american influnce about equal rights and others.

Being from Scotland, I find alot of friends seem to be quite positive about Canada and Australia but less so about the US (probably because they are a bunch of racists :embarassed:).

I'm amazed at how much American culture gets shoved down British peoples throats, 80% of your tv shows end up here, your middle of the road news stories make it into our news papers. Ever stage of your elections is followed in great detail, (even the primaries or whatever they're called) much to my irritation. We got to watch the Republican party pick it's leader, yeah!

There is a divide in the UK between those who want to integrate into Europe, those who want to break away and move closer the the US (I have no idea how that would work or means in reality). There is definately a wierd anglo-american obsession in the media which i think is very much one sided, some British people are all misty eyed at the big english speaking free market capitalist machine over the atlantic and dismayed at the 'socialist' German/French alternative waiting for them in Brussels.

America is what Europe would be like if not the borders/nations/traditions/monarchies and other old power centers, and people would be more free (well except last 20 years of progress). America is like upgraded Europe, Europe 2.0

If it comes to people they are almost exactly the same, that's why american TV and movies is so popular in Europe. America is much more creative in this regard inventing new games and reality shows, and have much bigger budget to accomplish it.

The biggest American motion pictures companies were started by poor Jewish immigrants escaping persecution of Russian Empire.
This example shows how old Europe killed human potential. Only in America, country of freedoms, their talents could flourish. Even in spite of moderate antisemitizm of mainstream society.

I think since i am American with most of my ancestry tracing back to very early settlers who came in 1630's and before the 1750's. Many of them Being Scottish or Scotch Irish Also American folk culture and the american identity was mainly created by Scotch Irish who where Scottish people living in Ulster Ireland. Hillbilles are Scottish. American gosple music(only a little pit in black gospel music) was heavily influnced by Scottish church music a type that was orignnally sang in gealic. Southern whites are either mainly Scottish or have a very high amount of Scottish ancestry.

In the American revolutionary war fighting for freedom from British scotch irish(who orignalley came from Scottish and had mainly Insular Celtic ancestry) where the main ethnic group not English. A British Hessian said this about the American revolution "Call this war by whatever name you may, only call it not an American rebellion; it is nothing more or less than a Scotch Irish Presbyterian rebellion". A British major general testified to the House of Commons that "half the rebel Continental Army were from Ireland" meaning their first generation Scotch irish and of Scottihs ancestry.

The first American president that was not born rich and was known as the president of the people was Andrew Jackson He was a first generation Scotch Irish and also a redhead he was president from 1829-1837. In the war of 1812 he lead an army of Scotch Irish sharp shooting mountain men aka they where from the people group later known as hillbillies down into New Orleans. He deafted edward PAkenkam one of the greatest British Genrals who was also killed in the battle.

Here is a song made in the 1950's by Scotch Irish it is traditional American music a mixture of west African and Scotch Irish about the battle of new orleans. U would probably think this guys a dumb american raciest u dont realize ur brother by blood.

The Confederates who fought for slavery of Blacks in the american civil war from 1861-1865 where of mainly Scottish ancestry. That is why the Confederate flag had st Andrew's croos they did it because of their Scottish ancestry. The confederate also had a traditional Scottish battle crys.

In world war two Genral patton the american leader and allied leader aginst the nazis was Scotch irish his direct ancestor was a genral for scotch Irish mountain men in the revloutionary war. Genral MacArthur Americas leader against Japan was of Scottish ancestry and there is some evidence he descended from Robert the Bruse.did u know more than 10 american presidents have been 100% or mainly of Scottish ancestry. U ecever seen the whole kicking ur feet thing hillbilly dancers do u really think they thought if that on their own they got that from scotland(well i guess all british people did it).

I get sick of it when people say anglo american when i think they should include Celtic- American. So much of American culture and identy is from the Scotch irish ur stereotype of the dumb hillbilly raciest american is from Scoth Irish.

Also u need to know where we Americans are coming for what our backround is. We are not native to this Continent we all come from the old world continents we are from those old world cultures and much of a culture we created. All Americans where originally white mainly protestant white from mainly England, ulster ireland, Germany. It was very hard for white Americans to allow non whit'es into their culture which resulted in angre and raceism. the Africans where slaves they defintley influenced american culture and without them we would not have it but they still where not accepted because they where so different. Americans saw Africans as inferior because Europe starting in the 1400;s was like one million times more advanced and powerful than any non Europeans.

We should all be shocked that white Americans eventulley after 100's of years learned to accept other races. Think about Muslims accepting 13% of their country being white westerns heck no would they allow that. It was also hard to accept non protestant Europeans like Irish, Italiens, Polish or just non English speakers but that conflict was not as bad as conflict with blacks. I am very proud that our country was able to do that we are not one ethnic group like almost all other countries we are a mix of old world ethnic groups and of course there are still some native Americans but they dont life there old culture out in everyday life. and white americans are almost never from soley one country i am a mix of Scottish, Irish, German, English, welsh, Cornish, Swiss, Prussian( far far eastern Germany), Norwegian and maybe more i dont know of since my ancestry has been here for so long.

we are very non raciest in my opinion because now we accept so many people and honestly i have not meet very few real raciest. the only i have meet have been black it is reverse racism but basically we accept everyone. America has literlly almost single handidly created the modern world our idea of freedom and equal rights and not to mention our countless inventions. Our clothing is now worldly accepted because we are so popular and powerful the English language is more wide spread than any language. We are one of the most important nations in the history of civilization. We literally created a new age in human history. We will not be forgotten later in human history.

I think the world defintley has some hate towards america because of our succes and influence. i am not saying all or that they are extremely hateful but it does exist. I think europe should have helped us more fight wars for iraqi freedom from a dictator(who cares if there where not weapons of mass destruction), help stop terriost from hurting our world and the Muslim world. also to help us end the extreme muslim world from killing more people like in syria and stop iran from getting a nuke. Americans dont understand we cant just hope mid eastern violence ends we need to stop it they wont stop their leaders are extremist or corrupt and of course the terrorist also the Muslim world was born by conquering war has been apart of it since the begging they wont stop. people blame us for trying to take oil have we taken any our wars in the mid east are just it is mainly liberal american hate based on the Vietnam war (which was fighting for south Vietnamese who where being unwilling conquered by communist supported by the USSR who wanted to destroy the free world).

wow i had no idea u guys got so much american news and tv sorry about that. I would hate it if i got british stuff i have lived my whole life known america was the world's top dog and only being influced by my own country. I would hate it if there was a high forgien power influencing my country. well i think caplism works better just look at the succes america has had till the 1950's it is because of our economic system ever heard of the american dream. This is not a lie in america(i dont know about Europe and U.K.) u can be any one u want to be u just have to work for it it is incredible and that is because of our economic system.

Mostly true, although it's important to note that "Scotch Irish" is a bit of a misnomer, as the entire English/Scottish border region experienced a migration in the 1700s, so many of the migrants were actually Northern English, and not all of them stopped by Northern Ireland. It's also important to not conflate them with Highlanders. The Scots among them were mainly Lowland Scots... the Highlanders had their own migration, which also resulted in many settling in the future United States, although many were displaced later because, unlike the "Scotch Irish," the Highlanders tended to by Loyalists during the Revolution.

See Fischer for more.

Both quotes are probably exaggerations, although indeed, the Scots-Irish were one of the primary Patriot groups during the Revolution. Among white colonists, it bascially stacked up like this:

Patriots
East Anglian Puritan descendants (Phillips argues that they were the primary instigators)
South English Cavalier & servant descentants
Scots-Irish and Borderers
Church Germans (i.e. Lutherans and Calvinists)
Dutch (although less enthusiastic than the above)
French Huguenot descendants (also a bit less enthusiastic)

Loyalist and/or Neutral
Anglican seaboard merchants
Scottish Highlanders
Quakers
Peace Germans (i.e. Mennonites and Dunkards)

For more see Phillips.

Probably not; they likely had more English than Scottish ancestry as a whole, and the more enthusiatically Confederate areas within the Confederacy were the more English areas. But you're right that they made good use of the Scottish cultural influence that permeated the Confederacy nonetheless.

Don't get too sick, it's a linguistic term rather than an ethnic term, like "Latin American." Besides, Lowland Scots have a lot of Angle in their background thanks to the extent of Northumbria.

from sources i had read actulley i had to read a book about it in school something like 40% where scotch irish in the revolutionary war. They where the biggest ethic group overall but took a small amount of the population.

u could be right the way to figure it out would be DNA tests on southners. I based some of it on the red hair map of america. U can see that the Appalachian mountains(tradtional scotch irish area) has 10-15% red hair just like Scotland and Ireland same with Nova Scotia new Scotland a Provence in Canada. Over all the tradtional areas of the south(takes up just about all of the confederate states) as alot of red hair 7% than almost any area on western Europe(red hair almost only exists in western Europe). This in my opinon means they have alot of R1b L11/P310 and alot of Scotch Irish ancestry. It was most likely the R1b L11/P310 Indo Europeans who spread red hair to western Europe.

i had no idea it was lingustic i alway thought it had something to do with the English. Honestly even though i am only like 20 scotch irish they are not represented. They almost single handle created american folk culture but no one mentions them in school history class. we have so many generals and presidents who where Scotch Irish. All they mention in early America are the English when the american identity was made more by the Sctoch Irish. The hillbilly name is meant for the scotch Irish so much of american culture originates with them. Traditional American music is a mixture of Scotch Irish, west African, and alot of new inventions the two groups made but in history class all we hear of is the west Africans.

Scotch Irish are very important but not given credit for what they have done that is why i am annoyed.

America up until 1960 was good.
After that, it was a bastion for degradation

Arkansas is primarily German, Irish, Scots-Irish, English.

Blonde and red hair are very common amongst the white people. I can't go anywhere without seeing a red head.

One of my sons was the only white kid in about 100 in his grade without light hair. Now, it's also common for the hair to darken with age. Many cotton tops will end up with very dark hair. My father's three brothers and my brother were like that while my father and I were dark headed from birth.

The European-descended population in my area of NJ, is primarily Italian, Irish, German, and Polish. More often than not, they’re a mix of those ethnic groups; especially Irish-Italian. These were the descendants of the immigrants that came to the United States in the late-19th to early-20th century. However, many of them have moved away to the suburbs, upstate-New York or out to Pennsylvania. Today, there’s many white American transplants from California, or the Midwest, who are flocking to areas of high-urban development in NJ/NYC.

However, growing up, perhaps the majority of my peers were Hispanic. Usually from Ecuador, Puerto Rico, or Cuba.

My family only came to the USA in the 1970s. Both my mom and dad spent much of their formative years in Italy. I was born in the USA though. Nevertheless, I do have relatives that have been coming here since the turn of the 20th century, to my knowledge. My great-grandmother was here since the 50s.

I thought the quota was so bad for Italians now that barely anyone could come. For us, we only managed it because my father had family here.

I'm surprised that's where you wound up too. I thought there were still some "white ethnic" enclaves in Jersey.

It's about the same all over the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut, even Pennsylvania urban areas: Irish, Italian, German, Jewish, a few Poles, although there are also "old Americans", especially as you get out of the urban core. Then there's the large Asian population: Chinese, Koreans, and now Indians. Latin Americans too, as you say, and then the black areas.

It's the UN, more or less, although in my experience the mixing across "race" lines doesn't extend to where you live or your kids go to school, or with whom you socialize, although that's changing a bit. There's now some Asians in our school system, but other than that it's white and mostly Christian, with a good sprinkling of mixed "Jewish-Catholic" marriages, and a few upper class black professionals.

Again, in my experience, this is basically how it is across the whole Northeastern part of the country.

Manhattan is a place apart. It draws people from across the country, and the need for affordable housing means they're spreading to previously "ethnic" areas like Williamsburg in Brooklyn or Astoria in Queens.

Fire haired, America is an opportunity, since Europe is over populated. As for your system was used 2000 years ago in Greece and Rome and probably even better. I like US people because they are more cheerful and optimistic.

There's still remnants of the white ethnics in NJ, but the population is changing. NJ had a mass exodus of people over the last few years.

In regards to quotas, the 1965 immigration act had abolished the quota system put in place, in 1924. Nevertheless, I think my great-grandmother immigrated here, because she had some relatives here prior.

Just curious, where is white population leaving to?

Just curious, where is white population leaving to?
Places with less crime and better schools. The Rich can afford the swanky private schools.

Just curious, where is white population leaving to?

Based on my own experiences, I've known a lot of people that have moved to New York City, particularly in Brooklyn; Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, California, Virginia, Connecticut. Many other states as well, basically people people looking for more affordable property. With the exception of people that move to NYC, which is more expensive. Thus much of the white American population in NJ has dispersed throughout the country. Some people are going to states to live with other relatives they may have out in other areas.

http://www.northjersey.com/story/mo...l-tops-list-states-losing-residents/96108416/
Of those moving out of New Jersey, about 40 percent said they were relocating for a job, 30 percent were exiting for their retirement, and 20 percent were going because they wanted a lifestyle change.

There's also a phenomenon of african-americans who migrate back to the south in great numbers recently. They leave for the same economic and family-relationship reasons as the white populations.
