hey all, its been about 2 years since i did any homework or reading about dna as life got very busy. and a lot of what i had learned has been lost. ive tested positive for L21, and M222- which was a surprise at the time as my roots are primarily from Ireland as far back as paper and family history can tell me. im looking to further my snp testing but im not sure what direction i should be looking to test in, and im sure the advancements and information in the past two years is light years ahead of where it was when i stopped reading up on it. i am hoping someone will be able to possibly guide me towards what possible snp's i should look into testing. below are the current str's i have tested through genebase (and previously converted to the same format ftdna and others use for the few markers that they identify differently).

You fit right in with Irish people; extreme west European insular islands Celtic. As you know L21 is the famous signature of your island of origin and can also be picked up among British and more rarely, French samples.

I'm assuming you have tesed with FTDNA, if you havn't already join the Ireland yDNA Project. I'll be able to compare you to other project members when it comes to testing further SNP's. It's probable at a minium you are DF13+ like most L21+.

Here's a relatively recent version of Mike Walsh's L21 SNP tree:

Dubhtach, I recall your screen name from the old dnaforums before it shut down. And I appreciate the info guys. I tested through genebase and my ysearch profile is genebase converted to ftdna for the few markers that differ. Mikew had added me to the l21 project a couple years back but life got so busy with more children so I stopped digging and learning on dna. My brother recently tested with 23andme and this peaked my interest again. I'd like to test out at least 67 markers and get a deep clade test with ftdna but I wanted to refamiliarize my self with everything, and hopefully they will offer a discount so its more affordable.

I don't find any real close matches through ysearch and when I do they are either from ireland or french last names. And I find no matches with my lastname which is primarily scottish but also english(although through family tree work my name is from northern ireland).

Also, can I still join the ireland project even without testing through ftdna?

additionally,

through genebase i could take the following tests.

DF21 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L144 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L159.2 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L193 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L226 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L371 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L513 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L554 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
L96 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.
M37 Stand Alone SNP Test, $29.00 US
To further refine the subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b.

but in reality, i dont feel like wasting money with genebase when i would prefer to get involved with ftdna. does ftdna currently offer any special packages, or are there any special discounts offered for different projects i may fit into?

just doing some quick comparisons of my str's i wonder if my best chances would be testing for DF21 or Z253?... if i were to test with ftdna, is there a comprehensive SNP test that is available that takes all the guessing out of it that would test for all of the major SNP's?
