US flirted with Al-Quaeda - September 11
US flirted with Muslim Brotherhood - instability in North Africa
US flirted with Saddam - Iraqi war, Hussein execution
...
US flirted with Nazists - what's next?

Very true, FBS...it's called appeasement in this case, and in my opinion it never works.

I may have mentioned it elsewhere, but Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" was rather recently re-released. While I don't agree with all of his conclusions, I don't know a better source for the actual events of the time, because it is based not only on his own on the scene reporting, but that of others, and is also based on diaries and writings of many of the principals.

It's an eye-opener. I really recommend it to anyone at all interested in that period of European history. The chapters on the Sudetenland are particularly apropos today, I think.

And speaking of "flirting" with Nazism...how exactly would the pact between Hitler and Stalin be defined? An engagement?
