By the way, I find the hand-wringing in the Anglo press about all the "sexist" negative comments in the Italian press about their clothing choices for their appearance at the Quirinale to be rather hypocritical, or they have very short memories. Does no one remember the endless discussions about Hillary's hair and pants suits and her weight? Or Thatcher's hair and clothes? PLEASE! It's the way it is when you're in the public eye. Men avoid the worst of it because they wear a uniform. And in a fashion and appearance obsessed country like Italy it's going to be worse. For the record, the criticism was spot on for Guidi, as she needs to ditch the too young and too blonde Heidi/Maria from the Sound of Music hair and highlights and get her eyebrows redone. They were right about Lanzetta too...I mean, what was she thinking when she put on those boots? As for palazzo pants, they were evening wear in the eighties, duh, and Boschi's get up I might wear to a PTA luncheon, but for this occasion? Please, and it is too bright. A couple of the jackets are too bright, especially for the season. A little elegance, please. I'm sure Armani would be happy to advise. As for Giannini's and Madia's sheer black stockings, that's getting a little picky even for me. They look quite elegant and appropriate for the occasion. Madia should also get honorable mention as she's heavily pregnant. Trust the troglodyte from the troglodyte Lega Nord to make an issue of it.

origins of Madia are southern Italian
Lorenzin is Veneto
Pinotti is Lombard
Guidi and Boschi are either Tuscan or Emilian
others I am unsure

Actually, the regional connection for half of them is Toscana.

Lorenzin's father is from the Veneto, but her mother is from Firenze. Giannini is Tuscan, from Lucca. (The name is also very common in La Spezia.) Boschi is also Tuscan, from Arezzo. Mogherini is Roman born and bred, but both her parents were Tuscan, and coincidentally, also from Arezzo. Madia is Calabrese, although born and bred in Rome, but she did university work in Lucca. Of the remaining three, Guidi is Emilian, of a prominent family from Modena. Pinotti is Genova born and bred and the name is common not only there but in Emilia as well as in Lombardia. Lanzetta is from Calabria, and I don't know of any Tuscan connection at all.

Unfortunate that this clip of the vulgarities of that ignorant, maleducato, ridiculous Cacciari should have been posted. He's one of those dinosaurs of the Italian political system whom I find so impossible to explain to my American friends and colleagues. A nativist of the Veneto who is at the same time a Marxist professor of philosophy. If any North Americans are reading this, try to imagine someone who is both a Communist and a member of the Know Nothing Party, who then builds a bridge to nowhere wasting millions of taxpayer dollars so he can build a monument to his own ego and pay off all his cronies. This is why I despair of Italian politics. You can't make this stuff up.

As for Madia, again,for any foreigners reading this, she's a specialist in labor issues, so at least her Phd has some connection to her duties. She attracts controversy because she advocates changes to the insane Italian employment laws which make it impossible to fire people or to hire part time workers. Her crime is to want to bring these practices in line with those of northern social democracies like Denmark, which would still leave these laws far from what we have in North America. Even that is enough to make some sections of the Italian political class and electorate foam at the mouth. She also supports the notion, horror of horrors, that under certain circumstances, the children of legal immigrants should get the right to Italian citizenship.

If I were going to list them in order of whom I admire, Madia would be near the top of the list, both for her 'tough' views, and for her toughness under fire. However, I think I might have to put Lanzetta first. Taking on the 'ndrangeta in Calabria itself requires a brand of courage, physical and moral, which makes anyone extraordinary in my book.

I don't know...maybe the northern Europeans who settled North America and whose standards of beauty affected the Hollywood film makers explains some of it. Does the term racism ring a bell?

Or, if you want to know my personal take on it, and even if you don't, perhaps there's a conspiracy of hair dressers around the world, in cahoots with the manufacturers of hair bleach, who indoctrinate women into believing that once they start to go grey they should lighten their hair because it's too much work trying to cover grey roots, and besides lighter hair provides less contrast and so wrinkles aren't as apparent. That's actually one conspiracy theory to which I'm very partial. I have so far resisted.

And for your information the vast majority of the women in this thread with highlighted hair were probably blonde as children and teens. It's very common in northern Italy. When blonde hair darkens it usually turns a very boring sandy or mouse brown color; not very attractive. It's very common to want to get a prettier color. As for the older women, one of the Tuscans has white hair which has had a toner applied to it, which also happens quite frequently. There, a lesson in women's hair grooming for you.

As to your sexist comment about women in government, it hardly appears to me that you have turned over a new leaf. Are we to be treated next to a tirade about the Jews?

Considering the absolute mess that men have made, I think it's about time we have a go. We certainly can't do worse.

I agree with angela; the women who highlight their hair here.. it,s because their natural hair color is an unactractive mousy light brown or dark-mousy blonde...
Here as people get older the tendency is to dye hair in light colors.. because..light colors makes people look younger.. and because black hair or dark brown hair doesn't feet all the women...

Also those italian women with black hair are 80% or more BOTTLED-black haired... natural black hair are uncommon in italy.. those who dye their hair black have naturally dark brown hair or medium brown... because a shiny black is more noticeable than a dark brown..
And even many brown haired women put lighter meshes in their hair.. because if you have fair skin and brown or dark brown hair..black hair color dying doesn't fit you..and looks unnatural

Reminder to the females in this forum: Should we care that much about the hair colour? I think not ... But it is an axiom that we prefer real blonde women, ceteris paribus. I dunno why, it's in the genes I suppose (I call it the "Helen of Troy Syndrome")

BTW I saw the " Blue is the warmest colour " and one of the protagonists had light blue hair in the beginning, but who really cares? Right?
