Computers will soon be able to simulate the functioning of a human brain. In a near future, artificial superintelligence could become vastly more intellectually capable and versatile than humans. But could machines ever truly experience the whole range of human feelings and emotions, or are there technical limitations ?

I highly doubt robots could get close to current humans (consciousness, self-reflection) without some strides in quantum computing.

As it stands the most complex, highest entropy systems are found within the 3(physcial dimension)/4 Dimensional(+Time) Networks created by Brains, namely Neurons.
The system has entropy and stores additional vector spaces up to 11 dimensions. If you think I am kidding/playing*(edited per Jovialis suggestion) with ya, follow 3 Brown 1 Blue on youtube and you can understand what encoding a higher dimension into a lower mathematically rigorous structure means. A simple example in principle is conservation of angular momentum in Newtonian Physics.

The hardest problem on the hardest test (The way the Romanian Mathematician solved the problem, is basically a proof of how higher dimensional spaces can be encoded/compressed into lower dimensional sequences.

What am I trying to say?

Well, the center of your brain, whoever is reading this... Is far more complex in nature (entropy, information, for reference research Boltzman and Maxwell (Maxwells Demon specifically) than anything found in the macro cosmological scale.

Meaning: It is far easier to predict how Planets will rotate around the galaxy, with unmatched accuracy you can predict an eclipse even 100k years from now, than to predict the very next firing of your own Neural Network.

Note: I disagree with parts of this paper, especially conclusion, but you get the idea...
Thus I highly doubt the singularity of consciousness as we know it in Humans and living organisms can be replicated in a robot.
However... I do not expect it to be impossible either... Would just require some Deus Ex Machina.


Let me muddy the waters with some Metaphysics:

Anyone who has studied, even superficially, the Classical Greek debates regarding material world, or ideal world (Socrates, Plato, Aristotles etc etc, 300-400 Years preceding Jesus) will have a couple of higher dimensional structures in their brain light up when reading the above sentence by Jesus according to the Gospel of Thomas.

Just like Jesus, if the Gospel of Thomas is to be trusted, I am truly astonished regarding the dual nature of the world as ideal and material.

How such higher dimensional networks, could be mathematically rigorous in the physical plane... That is truly the wonder of wonders.

Note: I am using Jesus as depicted by Thomas Judas in the gospel of Thomas found in Nagh Hamadi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nag_Hammadi_library) And thus as a "historical figure".
For all the Atheists and Agnostics, take it the same way as any readings of Aristotle or Strabo, not religiously, figuratively. For the religious folk, do not take this literally. (I personally doubt Jesus was talking about material wealth in that verse (29))

Even if technologically possible, the last thing we need are emotional robots. They will demand equal treatment and rights, or worse. Emotionless robot is a perfect slave and let's keep it this way.

It is true that humanoid robots can think like humans and respond to queries and questions like humans. But that doesn't make the humanoid robots can feel and have emotions like real HUMANS.

Human emotions are powered by hormones or nervous signals, which is natural in its nature. For a Robot recreating the same emotion human has, based on the situation is not possible. Reason: they works on algorithms and micro-chip, not on instincts or nerve-signals.

Even if the scientists able to create the algorithm to replicate the emotions of humans, I strongly believe it will not be as same or accurate as human's. We humans always rely on our instinct and cognitive abilities to connect different events/situations in our life and respond accordingly.
That might be a challenge for robots when it come to emotions.
