It seems that socialism is going down for the time being.

I am not with the socialists.
"Austerity" is the means by which the rich use the economic crises they create in order to increase their stranglehold on national economies. Opposing that tactic does not automatically make someone a socialist. I wish people would learn what socialism actually is, and what it isn't. Here's a hint - socialism is all about who owns the means of production. But there are other ways to create a reasonable degree of economic fairness without workers' co-operatives and without government owning and operating the means of production, supposedly on behalf of the people. Capitalism can actually be useful in a society, but only as long as the majority remember to have a profound mistrust of capitalists.
It is like a ship that the marine engineer(s) has locked the engine room and taken over the ship. The lawyers and the accountants are the "marine engineers" who through legislation and corporate secrecy "locked the engine room" or locked the economic engine. They have taken over the economy and driving the ship into the rocks as they have no vision. Do lawyers have vision or the accountants? Look at the academic curricula. Are these the people that should lead the nation?

Capitalism spawns innovation, socialism encourages the status-quo.
