Hello everyone,

I've just received my results frome 23andme and I'm a bit suprised.

From my mother, I'm H1a1 wich is pretty common in Europe I think.

But from my father, 23andme just gave R1b1b2a.

Here is what I've got :

R1b1b2a defining mutations

variant call anc der

rs9785971 (L23) G A

rs9786142 (L49) A T A

R1b1b2 defining mutations

variant call anc der

rs877756 (S3) T C

rs9786153 (M269) C T C

R1b1b defining mutations

variant call anc der

rs9785702 (P297) C G C

What does it mean ? Am I R1b1b2a* (or R1b1a2a*) ?

I am positive to L49 but when i click on L23 it says "no genotyped". I've read that L49=L23 ; Is that correct ?

Am I R1b-L23 ?

I've read that this type of haplogroup is very rare in Europe. I am from Lorraine (near germany border) but I'm pretty sure that my ancesters were from Tyrol or Vorarlberg in Switzerland (they came to Lorraine after the 30 years war at the end of the XVIIth century).

This map shows a concentration of R1b1a2a precisely in Tyrol and Switzerland (raetic ?) ; but i can't post it yet (First result when you type on google: Gerard Corcoran R1b-L23 Frequency Map). Maybe it makes sense...

What do you think of that ? Should I do other tests ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

Welcome to the forum and our many branched R1b cluster.Without further testing it is hard to say. Yes so far you are L23+. You can go a few different routes str's-snp's. Many with your 23andme R1b designation are L51-;such as myself. You could be in R1b [CTS-7822+ CTS9219+] or [L584+] or[ L277+]
For example I'm in R1b CTS-7822+ CTS 9219+ cluster which is about 50%+/- between Germany-Poland-Ukraine-Russia you can have a very rough idea about frequency from the following maps.

Another aid is Ht-35 project with these possibilites group str cluster from b2-b5.

Thanks for the answer.

Should i pick the test from National Geographic ? or is it a waste of money ?

Have someone any idea how R1b-L23 came to germanian Alps ? Raetic population ? Etruscans ? or is it an older phenomenon ? Trojan ? (maybe i should go too R1b section for answers...)

I pick the raw data of my test and I'm clearly negatif to U106, U152, but i can't see results for DF27 or L121.

23andme test seems not very usefull :indifferent:

23and@me does a great job for the price.
Have you entered your 23andme results into Gedmatch and run some Admixture heritage?
http://v2.gedmatch.com/login1.php

We are still gathering data on our R1b branches. For our branch R1b-Z2103- L277/L584+/CTS-9219+ so far looks to have most diversity/variance in Ukraine Russia since all three can be found in the region. However this could change. I had once speculated that your branch/region your family is from is extremely old branch R1b connected to the Urals; also a region known close is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walser where L23+ L51- can be found, does red hair by any chance run in your Paternal side of family?
However I would hesitate to put you in a specific branch, we just do not have enough data. For example while looking for a possible close match without strs I stumbled upon R1b all the way out in Multon Punjab.

Anyway I would probably test for minimum 37 marker with Familytreedna and from there join HT-35 project linked above. From there you can get help with admin's to choose what markers to test, or post your results here for help.

kind regards Silesian

I've juste made some Admixture tests but i don't know wich one is usefull for our questions : mdlp ? eurogene ? dodecad ? Harrapaworld ?

The Walser theory is really interesting. As far as i remember, we have no pure red hair in our family. But we all have Blue/green eyes, brown hair with some red hair in the beard :)

Is picking a 67 marker test a good choice for what i am looking for ?

Thanks a lot for your advices !

Be patient and inquire for the next sale at Familytreedna to save some money if your budget is low. You can transfer your 23andme results to Familytreedna once you have an account with them.. From there, the admin at ht-35 project will be more than happy to help you.
I like all the calculators, Eurogenes, MLDP, Dodecad......etc.

1 - the benefit of the natgeno2 test is that you can transfer the results to ftdna for free and then join a project group.

2 - the other benefit is the ability to download the natgeno2 results to a excel spreadsheet and cross reference them to the isogg index and this will eliminate wasted money in testing subclades. The download to the excel sheet gives both positive and negative markers.
Natgeno2 by order of ftdna has stopped sending your negative markers to ftdna in transfers since April 2014

3 - if you test with natgeno2 and transfer to ftnda, then ALL the noted "presumed positive" in the ftdna tree are ALL negative markers

the new MDLP K23b test seems the most accurate that I have found.............its only a week old............the only issue is the 4 population mix

Thanks you all for the good advices. I will probably make a much deeper Y test in the next few month.

This is very interesting and not much of a surprised considering many Walser studies show rhesus negative gene frequencies as high as the Basques.
