I take it everyday (the spice) and I finally got used of the taste, it helps me to relieve my shoulder pain. Nothing else helped me before I started to take turmeric.

Would you mind telling me how much you take and how...on what foods? I'd really like to give it a try. If it works, I'll force myself to eat it!

Spices are not meant to be eaten alone. A little bit of spice and lots of rice, bread or potato. Spices are meant to add taste to bland food. Best way to acquire a taste for tumeric is to boil potatos after lightly frying them in oil. Add only half a teaspoon of tumeric. As your tongue gets accustomed to tumeric you can add more as time goes on. Mind you tumeric has an addictive quality. Once you start you may have cravings not like drugs but a pleasant need like ice cream. Tumeric is very healthy. Indians don't have certain sicknesses as curry really helps them and helps fight colds.

If you feel it is still too strong then dip bread into the yellowish fluid and consume the wetted part. It is delicious.

I made the fried and boiled potato with curry and sad to say it didn't taste that good. I usually have meat or tomatoes with more salt and more curry powder. Some oil helps. But with starter taste attempt it wasn't too bad.

The last person needing to increase brain power on Eupedia is you Angela. :) But if you find anything increasing and sustaining memory let me know. That's what I'm missing on genetic level.

Here is a recipe that I use either as dinner or as breakfast: Linseed ground (not more then two spoonfuls due to cyanide content), half a teaspoon turmeric, a bit of black pepper and a good quality yogurt. In the mornings I sometimes add cornflakes or walnuts, dried fruits, it depends to my mood. And it is true what Oriental says, you get sort of nice addiction to turmeric after you get used to it. But be careful with your clothes because turmeric is impossible to remove from the fabric.

(here is why is good to use black pepper with turmeric: Adding black pepper to turmeric or turmeric-spiced food enhances curcumin's bioavailability by 1,000 times, due to black pepper's hot property called piperine http://www.menshealth.com/mhlists/healthy-food-combinations/Turmeric_Black_Pepper.php)

I think your tastebuds must be different from mine. If I have to choose between becoming used to the taste of turmeric or early senility, I'll choose senility.

I tried it with the yoghurt (which I don't really like anyway unless it's got tons of fruit and sugar in it, and which sometimes doesn't agree with me). I don't know if I can force myself to eat it for long enough to get used to it. :sad-2: I'm going to try frying boiled potatoes and adding turmeric and black pepper to them, and see if its more palatable that way.

If not, I'm going to see if Whole Foods has it in pill form. Pain relief is a powerful inducement.

As for its beneficial effects on cognitive functioning, perhaps we would all be better off taking a pill or two of it a day.:)

I never much liked tumeric either Aberdeen, but since reading FBS post I bought some yesterday to give it another try. After making a few noises akin to a cat coughing up a fur ball....I thought it not as bad as I remembered. [It`s in the back of my cupboard today..lol.]

FBS.. thanks for that information...I just need to get used to it again..:)

Well, if fried potatoes can't make the stuff palatable, nothing can.

Well I could not find pills, but I could find the actual spice, and I simply had to choose beetwen the debilitating pain that was not going away for months or get used to turmeric. I tried it in tea with honey or with milk (worst combination to my taste) until I came up with the recipe that camuflaged the turmeric. Now I can add as much as I like and not get bothered by the taste. Otherwise we can use it in cooking especially add it to currys, it is actually one of the ingredients of curry spice, but I guess you already kow that. Good luck to those who have started to use turmeric(y).

I dont mean to be personal FBS, but do you know the rooth cause of your shoulder pain? 2 years ago i had a debilitating shoulder pain effecting all the lenght of my left arm. I know it could not be heart related as i just had a check up done before this episode happened. I was swallowing extra strength panadols as if they were candies. After weeks of no relief I was getting desperate and went to see a specialist.

All that pain was coming from posture. Being I am 6ft tall and was spending lots of time on the PC and laptop because of work and at home, I was being static in the same position for long periods of time. I was actually slouching and often sat in bad positions. I had adjusted the monitors (at work and at home, put them up quite considerably and kept my shoulders in upright position. I was given a few good gentle exercises to loosen up the damaged muscles and nerves and just a few weeks later I was healed and still no signs of problems today. I still do the exercises till today. I also took Vitam B12 tablets for some time but I just make sure I eat lean meat 3 times a week at least these day (so VitamB12 supplements would not be necessary)

No problem Maleth.

I know what is the root cause of my back pain more or less. I have it since 2006 and it started with the bad posture at work. Since then, it comes back every year. But last year was the worst, I also suspected it was my heart since I had pain on my left shoulder, but it wasn't. Doctors started to suspect MS. Well, I decided that I do not have MS!

So, I swim and try to be as much active as possible. Since I am more of the "intellectual" type, not an active one, I go to physio-therapeutic sessions almost every year, because I fail to do the exercises regularly. I take B vitamins, magnesium, eat proper food and, off course, turmeric which since I have started its intake has almost completely stopped the tingling and numbness in my fingers and lower part of my arm.

The best thing for treating chronic pain, nausea or panic disorders is usually cannabis (marijuana) but not all countries allow its legal use for those purposes. It's widely used here in Canada for both medicinal and recreational purposes but right now we have a regressive prime minister who's trying to reduce its use, much in the manner of King Canute ordering the ocean waves to retreat.

True, but try and get marijuana in Kosovo?! So, I will stick to permitted stuff...

The proposed therapeutic levels of the active ingredient:
http://www.integrativeoncology-esse...r-botanical-compound-as-exciting-as-curcumin/

Dosage: Unfortunately, we don’t know the optimal dosing. That said, doses from 500-3600 mg of curcumin per day have been used in recent studies. For cancer prevention: 400-500 mg per day (The “Curcumin Guru,” Dr Bharat Aggarwal, says he takes 500 mg per day.) During and after cancer treatment: 800-3000 mg per day (divided dose, with meals.)
  • If you want to take turmeric instead of curcumin, how much turmeric powder would you need to take per day? 1 tablespoon of dried turmeric powder weighs 6.8 grams. The average amount of curcumin (by weight) in turmeric powder is 3.4%. So, 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder is equal to 6.8 grams x 3.4% = 0.231 grams or 231 milligrams. Therefore, if you want to take 500 milligram of curcumin per day, you will need to consume approximately 2 tablespoons of dried turmeric powder.

There are numerous companies selling it on amazon.com. As just one example, a 60 count bottle of 500mg per pill is about 7.50 plus shipping. Anyone ordering them should make sure they contain piperine.

I have to take this route. :) It's not bad on boiled, fried potatoes or on Chinese noodles cooked in some chicken broth and other spices, and I think I could even acquire a taste for it, but I couldn't eat it every day in high enough amounts to reach the therapeutic levels. I do appreciate the suggestions, however.

Obviously, it's posited to have a protective effect for Alzheimers, beneficial effects for general cognition and memory, anti-cancer properties, and anti-inflammatory effects as well. The pain from certain auto-immune disorders like Rheumatoid arthritis or related auto-immune forms of arthritis, or lupus, for example, comes from inflammation, but the inflammation targets other organs in certain of these diseases as well.

I don't know if cannabis has equal anti-inflammatory effects, but I don't believe it offers any of the other benefits. In addition, some people might not like the mind altering aspects of any recreational drugs (including cannabis, or alcohol for that matter) and think of the havoc it could play with maintaining a girlish figure! :)

I think doctors are good for when you are really sick or for operations. They don't make any money on keeping you healthy so they don't care if you're healthy. It is like like a car mechanic. You go in when your car has problems.

I know this is very negative but you should hear what the teacher used to say when we were kids. "Lawyers are liars and doctors are thieves". Hmmm, "Dr. No or Dr. Killmequick", bad joke.

Speaking of docs, Doc Duvalier's son (Baby Doc) died today.

I was in an Iowa university in the 60s between quarters so we had a ten-day hoilday. The cafeteria was closed and they had a program for foreign students to visit families. I got in with family of the mayor of a small town. One night maybe at the end we were having dinner at the local inn where all the students with their host families were celebrating. There was a ruckus at the entrance and an entourage entered. The celebrity was a young black guy with a beautiful blonde at his side and everyone was very polite. He sat at our table after all it was the mayor of the town. I was told that guy was Baby Doc. It was the first time I ever heard of Doc. Duvalier and Haiti.

Maybe researching the topic would be helpful? You'll find that there's a huge body of anecdotal evidence that cannabis is very effective in treating chronic pain, nausea, panic disorders and can possibly mitigate some of the effects of dementia. You'll also find that governments routinely block any meaningful scientific studies of the medical uses of cannabis, then use the lack of meaningful scientific studies as an excuse to keep the medical use of cannabis lllegal. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that Big Pharma donates huge amounts of money to politicians every year.

One problem with medical use of cannabis is that older patients generally dislike the high it creates. Another problem is that smoking it is the best way to control dosage, but smoking is not a very healthy way to ingest anything.
