Another one of my favorites is Vieni Sul Mar. I really like the melody. There used to be a version by Murolo on youtube but I don't see it now.

This version is by a not very well known Argentinian tenor but it has the benefit of a good onscreen English translation, and the singer doesn't "over-belt" it, if you know what I mean. It still sounds intimate.

Not going to see the movie since I didn't even like the play. :) The only thing that's spectacular is this one song, and no one has ever sung it better than Elaine May, imo, both musically and emotionally, not Celine Dione, or Barbara Streisand or Hudson. I just always get emotional when I hear it. Gut wrenching.

Undoubtedly many fortunes of some Disney feature films - at least for the successes dated especially between the 60s and 70s - were due to first-rate soundtracks. New compositions by established artists (think of Elton John for the "Lion King" in more recent times) or beautiful reinterpretations and readjustments of classic compositions. What I perhaps prefer is the famous Sleeping Beauty waltz which draws heavily on that one by Tchaikovsky :)

One of the great things about being a parent is being able to relive those great films through your children. It's a wonderful excuse to see the world through a child's eyes. Even now, on the rare occasion, long after the children are grown, my wife and I will pull out a Disney feature, Beauty & the Beast, Snow White, or Cinderella, and watch them to enjoy the incredible skill and artistry of these movies. How exciting is must have been to be the first audience to see Snow White!

Children also let us go back to Disneyland again and again. I don't like what I've heard about recent changes to the park, but in the day is was grand!

It would be difficult for me to pick "a" favorite performance by Callas, but this Violetta in La Traviata is "way" up there. She pierces and then wrings the heart. Verdi and Callas were a match made in heaven.

It was hair nostalgia. :) That was my hair for years, just darker. I loved that period for hair; just wash it and go.

Fortunately, women don't lose their hair to the extent men do, although it does get a bit thinner.

k.d.lang is one of my favorite singers "ever". She can sing the blues as well as the greats of the past, country, pop, you name it. It's such a damn shame, in my opinion, that she hasn't had more success. I think part of it may be that people can't get over the way she presents herself.

In the last 2 years, I make it a point to check out Italian Folk Music. My favorite TV Show is Commissario Montalbano, The Sicilian Detective (Polizia) created by the Sicilian Writer Andrea Camilleri [RIP as he passed away last summer). The Montalbano shows (Young Montalbano as well as Commissario Montalbano) introducted my to Olivia Sellerio who sings many of the Montalbano Soundtracks. I would say her music is in the tradition of Sicilian Folk music. I also like listening to the classical folk music of Southern Italy. The Neapolitan ones (Come Facette Mamette, Funiculi Funicula and O Sardato innamarato) are the closest ones that rival the Sicilian ones (e.g. Vittz na Crozza, Ciuri Ciuri) in my opinion, maybe slightly better. I have also followed this beautiful young couple from Calabria who play traditional Southern Italy Tarnatella muisic at festivals and restaurants in Southern Italy. They did a video on the ferry to Messina and played folk music on it. There names are Fortunato and Valentina (the word Bella does not do her justice).

First loyal love

In my small land, I was collecting linen

And I saw something flashing in the green

Like when the moon rise up
from her shining beautiful bed

You saw me and you hid in the grass

You were afraid I'd meet you alone

I went away, but, I tell you with the heart
The feet were moving forward, the eyes backward.

First loyal love
Even at night I see you in my dreams

I wake up and I don't see you
and I start crying for a long time

Put My Love in your soul,
like I put it in my heart

Because that's how things go in life:

Very nice. I love tango musica and dance. Watching my parents dance it is one of my favorite memories from childhood. They still listened to the old tangos from the war years even in the 60's and 70s, because they were the best.

It’s a rendition of a popular Pizzica di San Vito.

Wow! We have the same taste in tango. I love Gotan project, and my respect for Robert Duvall went even higher when I found out he's obsessed enough with tango to do that movie. Who would have thought it? :) He's pretty darn good too. I thought the Tango Club scenes were great but my favorite was the sequence by the young couple at the end.

Since you are Italian, it will be easier to your accent to learn the Grico than modern Greek,
and maybe easier to pronounce ancient Greek sounds,
as the most easy language for a modern Greek to pronounce is Latin, than modern Italian, (except Eptanese and Cretans)

I should say, that even in the Griko towns there are only pockets of families that can still speak Griko, and they don’t speak it outside of their circle, they speak Italian or Salentino dialect with others.

For those that don't know Gadjo Dilo is a one of the new wave of Greek musicians that have appeared in Greece the last 10-15 years that are creating Greek or adapting traditional or popular music music into new musical idioms. Gadjo Dilo's style is gypsy jazz/swing ala Django Reinhart. The Apurimac band has worked in the Latin Jazz idiom. I love the new generation of formally educated musicians.

Here's another example by Penny Baltatzi:

The other movement has been some cross pollination between Greek & Turkish popular music. A number of Turkish songstress have performed in Greece and vice versa. Remember that the rembetiko idiom and culture was prevalent in Constantinople (Instabul) and Smyrna (Izmir) particularly among the drug users of that era. While it has grown and thrived in Greece after the exchange of populations in 1922 it has remained rather static in Turkey. The Cafe Aman Instabul band has taken upon itself the task to revive it in Instabul. Formed mostly from musicians from the Turkish Music Conservatory augmented by Greek musicians it released a great first album Fast-i Rembetiko in 2012.

Indeed. Don't mess with the Queen on her own turf. :)

Seriously, if I were a lesbian and unattached I'd pick her above any of those slack skinned young women, and not just because of her talent. Tina shows that mature and strong physically and mentally can be very sexy.

I still don't understand how I didn't "get" Elvis until decades after I was a teenager. Music before the Beatles didn't really exist. How dumb.

Yes I agree. Tina is very sexy. She is ravishing. She owns the stage and everyone follows her. She sets the tone of the Show. She is an authentic queen. The Queen of Rock. There was a lot of music before the Beatles. The Beatles were fans of Elvis and of American rock. The Beatles created a new musical style, without losing its references and influences. I love Elvis, Beatles and Tina. I like Heavy Metal and Hard Rock but, like my son, above musical genres, I like good music.

Salento and Jovialis, well I grew up in the 70's so to me this will always be the best era for music. Two groups and songs you can never go wrong with 1) Led Zepplin from the Mothership (Stairway to Heaven) Live version!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbhCPt6PZIU

2) Pink Floyd Time From Darkside of the Moon. When I was a kid in the 70's I thought it was cool, as I got older and figured out the lyrics, the song becomes more relevant to how quick our time here on earth really is.

Lyrics
Mister Death came prowling, prowling the streets
of my own neighbourhood
and from too much reckoning
he lost count...

and from a low doorway
and from a dark yard
stealthily, stealthily the smith came out
the smith came and spoke to him words of joy
Mister Death went prowling, prowling the streets
of my own neighbourhood

Mister Death came prowling, prowling the streets
and swept the neighbourhood
black skies came up
and a windstorm and smoke.

Wonder how is it to be 70-80 and hear and see all these about coronavirus
then you realize that indeed scythe Ripper set a trap around you

The orinal story is after a WW2 event of a massive execution of a block

Very moving, Yetos, but as a clip I posted on the Coronavirus thread shows some senior citizens keep their courage up by dancing on their balconies.

Anyway, to honor the spirit of Neapolitans singing and dancing to it from isolation, here it is .

"Pulcinella (Italian pronunciation: [pultʃiˈnɛlla] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Italian), Neapolitan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapolitan_language): "Polecenella") is a classical character that originated in commedia dell'arte (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commedia_dell%27arte) of the 17th century and became a stock character in Neapolitan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naples) puppetry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppet)"

Lyrics

I 've ordered to charon ( I 've called)
to Charon I order (I call, I chalenge)
I have ordered to charon
to Charon I order
ANATHEMA to you Charon
and I send you curse
and I am saying to Charon's lady
to charon's kids I say

I have a cloth, green, it is unworn (pure)
I wear it and I cheat you, (I laugh infront your face)
bread is in my hand , seven times kneaded
I eat it and I watch you (I challeng you, I oppose you)

and I am saying to Charon's lady
to charon's kids I say
ANATHEMA to you snakes (serpents, virus?)
and I don't cry anymore
I have ordered to charon
to Charon I order
ANATHEMA to you Charon
and I send you curse

I have a cloth, green, it is unworn
I wear it and I cheat you,
bread is in my hand , seven times kneaded
I eat it and I watch you

He brought us maks and misery
He killed our aged, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need
We invest him hard, we pay him well

But many came, too strong for us

Sting sends a message and a song to Italy, his second home...

Sometimes, even when speaking of nations, there is an alchemy whereby a stranger becomes a friend and then the friend becomes a member of the family. This is one of those times.

My friends...

When melancholy strikes you
Remember that there's someone there beside you
Life isn't always poetry
So many questions without answers...

But there is richness in friendship
An eternal treasure
Put aside your sadness
Sing with us, and it will pass

My friends,
Always ready to give me a hand
From near or far
These are my friends
Perhaps few but true,
I'm never alone in my troubles
These are my friends.

When your melancholy returns,
Sing this song along with us
Your sadness will then depart
And you'll find in us your true friends.

At times it only takes a single word

Said to a friend who is down.
A smile can turn a life around
And help someone to carry on.

My friends,
Always ready to lend a hand
From near and far
My friends.

50 years of Metal

the starting point Birmingham, ealry 70's, metal is Born,
Black Sabbath and Judas Priest,

ForCoronavirus Isolation and 'STAY HOME' order

I'd spend my days alone
I used to stay at home
Lost in seclusion there
Like I was in a cell
A captured heart as well
Surrounded by despair
Darkness filled my soul
Losing all control

Down on the streets below
Bright city lights would glow
The energy would rise
And through the heat I'd gaze
Still counting empty days
With fire in my eyes
Living through this hell
Can I break this spell

Fever. You set my soul on fire
Fever. You fill me with desire
Fever. You always get it right
Fever. All day and all night

... some people forget that East / West exchange isn’t just a recent phenomenon.

Light of Rome

https://youtu.be/qxqJF_7RCkE

Firmly I pledge
my loyalty to thee
Land of my Forefathers
forever brimming with glory

A land of beauty
home of the courageous

Our Eternal Rome

the might of enemy ships
Threatens us in vain
it is a hopeless quest
Turn away from deceit
and sweet delusions

For the trumpets of War
will call our Legions soon
And across the fatherland
a victory song will ring

And across the fatherland
our song will resonate
A time of joy and pride
for Eternal Rome ...

East vs West

I went for a ride this morning, opened all the windows; just wish I had a convertible.:)

It's such a glorious day here: blue skies, a good breeze, a warm sun, and forsythia, apple and cherry trees in bloom, dogwoods starting to unfurl their buds, and crocuses poking their heads out of the ground.

This we can still enjoy.

I have collections of old Italian music to play in the car.

It was lovely to hear this: E Primavera (Mattinata Fiorentina)...It's Spring; Wake Up Young Maidens.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YetRiizdHM

It’s springtime, wake up signorine
at the farmhouses Mr. April is playing the heartbreaker

and late in the evening, florentine maidens,
so many hairpins will be found on the meadows

little walnut blossom, there's a dim light but there are silence and peace
little walnut blossom, the light is dim
little burning flower, miss Bice never refuses a kiss
she likes to kiss, what's wrong with that?

It's springtime

little painted flower, they used to love so much in the 15th century
little painted flower, they used to love so much

silver florin, miss Amante let her painted lips
be kissed even by the wind

It's springtime
maidens and flowers, eternal triumph of youth
