50 years of metal
Iron maiden Revelations
O, God of earth and altar
Bow down and hear our cry
Our earthly rulers falter
Our people drift and die
The walls of gold entomb us
The swords of scorn divide
Take not thy thunder from us
Take away our pride (https://genius.com/Iron-maiden-revelations-lyrics#note-4904865)

Corona is an area in Queens, New York City, once very Italian and German (great Italian restaurant still there), but already by the time Paul Simon wrote this song heavily Hispanic. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus has hit it very hard indeed.

Not sure, but I believe it's from (or not far from) that area around Sacile-PN. The Y-DNA associated would be R-L2 (out of curiosity), based on a match.

He does inform Sacile-PN as his paternal grandfather's location, and he's R-L2. He's related to another Toffoli who informs Udine-UD as paternal grandfather's birthplace. It seems possible that these Toffoli from Trieste were from Sacile originally. Coincidently, I do have a "cousin" (different family) from Sacile who settled Gorizia, but IIRC his father was from Oderzo-TV.
Ed: Just checked. The current president of Brazilian Supreme Court descends from Giovanni Battista Toffoli and Catterina Pellegrinet, from Cordignano-TV, which is close to Sacile-PN.

Great old song.
All our focus has been on the disease and surviving it, but even if we do, what will the "new normal" look like. Unemployment claims are at Great Depression levels. What will our homes be worth? What kind of jobs will be left for lots of people who have been made redundant. For now, the small business grant will keep my husband's employees paid, and the rent paid, but for how long can the government do that, and how will it change America to become so dependent on government?
I don't want to think about it.
Certainly didn't see this coming on New Year's Day...

It's gonna be okay,
... financial aid programs will be extended because the solution chosen by Feds and States is responsible at forcing a lot of business to a “temporary” shut down, or to a reduction of services and production.
Our Dear Leaders are trying to save our lives by chipping away at our wealth.
... As we wait for a Vaccine:
In about a month and a half, the focus will shift at protecting the vulnerable,
and the Stay-Home / Quarantine will be minimal and locally targeted,
most business will reopen with new rules and guidelines as masks and gloves, social distance, ...
Also Travel and Vacation related biz will continue to suffer until the vaccine.
I think :)

WOW! The amazing Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. It was his last work, written when he was 26 years old, in 1736, at "deathbed". The poor young man died of tuberculosis soon after.
See: https://youtu.be/xHQVtYzjLao
And this is Rossini's Stabat Mater, from ~100 years later. It's more, say, "operatic" than Pergolesi's.
Freaking brilliant!!

they were searching for her with torches all night,

Ok at West Easter is tomorrow, but at East is next week,

“On the day in which we celebrate the trust in a life that triumphs, I’m honored and happy to answer ‘Sì’ to the invitation of the City and the Duomo of Milan. I believe in the strength of praying together; I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that everyone – whether they are believers or not – truly needs right now. Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth’s pulsing heart, this wonderful international forge that is reason for Italian pride. The generous, courageous, proactive Milan and the whole of Italy will be again, and very soon, a winning model, engine of a renaissance that we all hope for. It will be a joy to witness it, in the Duomo, during the Easter celebration which evokes the mystery of birth and rebirth” Andrea Bocelli
Andrea Bocelli, with the Foundation that carries his name, is currently involved in an emergency COVID-19 campaign. The Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF) has started a fundraiser to help hospitals purchase all the instrumentation and equipment necessary to protect their medical staff. The views are now up to 34 million...
When Andrea Bocelli (https://variety.com/t/andrea-bocelli/)’s Easter performance at Duomo di Milan was first conceived, it was being thought of primarily as a local event — or localized to Italy, at least. The live-stream’s instigator, the mayor of Milan, came up with the idea with the intention of uplifting his home country, the one hardest hit in some of the critical weeks of the coronavirus (https://variety.com/t/coronavirus/) pandemic.
It became a global tune-in event, of course, for a lot of people who viewed it as a substitute for church and a lot more who might never have darkened the door of one. Roughly 5 million people around the world logged on to YouTube (https://variety.com/t/youtube/) to view the half-hour sacred music concert as it was happening. By Monday night the archived performance had 32 million views. Clearly, it transcended religion, nationality, age demographic and even music preference on its way to becoming perhaps the signature cultural event of the pandemic.
His voice isn't what it was, but this beautiful music, these prayers, including Amazing Grace, sung by this lone, blind man in an empty church, amid empty streets, really moved me, and I guess it moved a lot of other people as well, religious or not, a lover of classical music and religious songs, or not.
This is the best response humanity could give in a time of pestilence, the most human one, from what is best in us: music and art which portray a lost and suffering humanity seeking comfort and hope, by a man who knows that one sees best through the heart, not the eyes. It's there that grace enters.
Wow. That original footage is...I don't even know how to express it...more frightening...more exotic...more "primitive" than anything you see in the movies or even at Native Gatherings today.

Nice remembered. “I’m an Englishman in New York”. No, it isn’t that music that I am post next. It’s just part of lyric of a music of Sting talking about his experience of life in NYC. Maybe, in a close future, I post it. This video clip shows ‘The Police’ performing Synchronicity II, from the album Synchronicity, maybe the best album maded by ‘The Police’. My older brother presented me ‘The Police’ when I went with my mother to meet his house located in inland of my State, where he was the boss of the Department of maintenance engineering of a steel industry. I was a boy. Since then I like so much of ‘The Police’. It was a fantastic band.

Tarantella del Gargano...Marco Beasley's version is very good, but this will always be the best for me...elemental...a cry not just from the heart but the blood...it's everything I love about Southern Italian music.
This woman, what should I do to love this woman?
For her I'll make a beautiful garden of roses,
All around her to make her fall in love,
With precious stones and fine gold,
In the middle of it I'll dig a beautiful fountain,
And spring water will gush from it,
I'll put on it a bird singing.
He'll sing and rest, saying "You sweetheart:
For you I became a bird,
To sleep beside you, oh beautiful lady.

Very nice, indeed. I liked it not only because of the music but because of the male dancer. They're usually much more restrained, which is more traditional, but as dance I like this more. I also like it because it's much more a tammuriata than a pizzica, and my Neapolitan grandmother in law danced it and tried to teach me. I think you have to be born to it, though.
If you haven't heart it, this is the Marco Beasley version. Really lovely, I think, but not as "raw" or "elemental"? It's like listening to a highly skilled operatic tenor singing a Neapolitan folk song: really beautiful in its own way, but not as it was meant to me.

Very nice. I'm sure in the old days if you touched her you wound up with a bride. :)
Very often when a couple dances, it's about the woman seducing the man, but allowing no touching. Only in a civilized culture would they get away with it.
They really spell it out in this staged piece.
It's like an ancient fertility rite.
He's going to die after a year of this, and then a new king will be crowned, but maybe he doesn't care? Shades of "The Golden Bough". :)

The drunkenness you see so often there really turns me off, but I like their food, and I love their music; it's happy making. :)
I really, really hope we can get back to joining together in groups to have a good time and celebrate. I've always needed quiet time, alone time, because I get overstimulated, but always punctuated by lots of human contact: restaurants, parties, games, concerts, even just having friends over for dinner or going to the theater.
I can't bear this enclosed, isolated lifestyle for much longer. It's really starting to get me down. I need more people in my life, and not just through zoom; I need hugs and kisses and just generally more physical contact.
Remember those studies of how children in orphanages deprived of human touch get psychotic? I believe it now. We're meant to be with other people.

Love that song!
Since we are talking about rock'n'roll... here is a fantastic cover by Led Zeppelin of "If you're going to San Francisco"... IIRC they just put this cover in-between playing Dazed and Confused and it left a lasting impression on me.

Hey Duarte: Listening to the best of the Midnight Special from the year 1973. Anybody American kid growing up in the 70's, assuming their parents would let them stay up!, stayed up to watch great live music come into their home on Friday night. I have been kicking back working on a Final exam (not for me!) and listening to great 70's music and getting panicked emails from my students. I am going to try to be nice, best I can, and tell them what not worry about for the Final as it is a Comprehensive Final exam!

Duarte: Yes, there are several best of each year on youtube. While those "best of" are good, those are someone's opinion. You can type in an artist and get individual performances of just about any major artist from the 70's. One of my favorite was when I was a teenager, Blondie came on with a "blue like miniskirt" and sang heart of glass with a break to give a speech about Nuclear war!. I wasn't that interested in her Nuclear war speech, for the record, but everything else about her performance was WOW:grin:.
Some Australian and UK acts would appear as well, Olivia Newton and the Bee Gees. ELO was on there lots as well.

Same to you and our family. My mother was a school teacher as well!, decided to retire a few weeks ago. She is in her mid 70's and was going back another year but with COVID-19 decided not to chance being in a class room next fall. My wife is a School teacher as well, she teaches Science, she says I get my Science knowledge because I married her!. I have been doing my best, been doing my classes in Zoom and doing Q&A sessions for exams. Going to do one next week for them. Of course, they have to ask questions, but they have been doing a good job.

Ah, poor Adriano.
I never found Saturdays so annoying, but then I never was "hung over" from various indulgences, or had anything to "repent". :)
Saturdays were annoying in other ways, of course, but because there was too much to do, not too little, whether I liked it or not: food shopping, errands, and cleaning that couldn't get done Monday-Friday because I was working, and, of course, endless children's sports activities or concerts. The absolute worst was swim practice or meets with my daughter. Sometimes we had to leave at 5:30 in the morning. Sundays were activities again, and massive amounts of cooking for the week ahead.
It wasn't all work, of course, so I don't mean to come off as "woe is me". :) We did go out almost all Saturday nights, and some Friday nights, either alone or with friends, or I hosted dinners at our house, or there was a dinner dance at the club. We had a lot of fun all those years. More than one Saturday night I still closed down a Croatian restaurant that became an old fashioned dance hall after 11PM, playing all Italian songs from the pre-WWII years. One night I kept the party going after 2AM by playing the juke box, and when we went home we saw the Manhattan skyline emerge in the dawn. Of course, I don't drink more than a glass of wine or one cocktail, and all the dancing anywhere was done under my husband's eyes. :)
In retrospect I'd also love to be going to those children's activities again. It was so "pure".
I guess I didn't need a lot of sleep then. :)
You know, I never was much of a Celentano fan, but with you and Salento posting his songs, I'm undergoing a conversion. He was funny and very, very, charming.
Not funny or charming, but very sad, here's an American song about the morning after.

Really beautiful ballads, Angela, thanks
:great:
Especially in Kristofferson's I see a bit of a transposition into music of the meaning of some verses from Leopardi's "Il sabato del villaggio":
"Diman tristezza e noia
Recheran l'ore, ed al travaglio usato
Ciascuno in suo pensier farà ritorno."
["Tomorrow sadness and boredom
They will get the hours, and to the used labor
Each in his thoughts will return. "]

One more k.d. lang. I've been listening to her all morning. Then I'll stop. Such a shame she never made it really big; I think her decision to go so "butch" in her appearance in later years, and also the lack of pyrotechnics, stage blitz etc. She's just a woman on stage. That's all you need though, imo, if it's this voice, and this body language.

Just came across my feed...a folk music group from Emilia Romagna, specifically Marzabotto in the Apennines. These are the relatives of the people murdered by the Waffen SS during the second world war in the largest slaughter of civilians during that period. In fact, it's the biggest mass shooting in Italian history.
That always resonates with me, because the same things happened right in my own backyard. Mostly, though, I think it's finally sinking in that I can't go home this summer.

At least there was is YouTube now. Wonderful local folk music. In the 1950 and 60's there was an effort by Greek folklorists to record songs, take pictures of the local dresses and record the different traditions at Christmas, Easter and the other major religious celebrations. But there not enough of them and some of the local variations were lost and you only heard the ones that were recorded by the folklorists. Over the last 20 years traditional music/dance was taught in the music schools whereas it was shunned before. As part of the renaissance, students went back into the villages and recorded local songs from all over, consulted local players and discovered the wonderful variations of even the standards. I am so happy about the formally trained musicians taking up the mantle of traditional music. Maybe something like that can/should happen in rural Italy.

As I said on another thread, one should never be surprised by the stupidity and sometimes the recklessness, and even the evil of one's fellow human beings.
It does get freaking wearing dealing with it, though, let me tell you. I used to come home sometimes and feel I needed to take a shower immediately. It's why I switched specialities for a more boring one. At least I didn't have to look at that damn dark underbelly of human behavior every day.
This isn't what I would choose to listen to, however. :)
Anyway, I don't need a gun for protection really: my beloved dog will tear the throat out of any unknown man who comes within ten feet of me. It's a bit of a problem. I left a window wide open and the landscaper walked past with a leaf blower. My dog was half way out the window before I yanked him back in. He stopped slavering, and the ridge of fur on his back went down, but he came over and sat on my chest and barked until the guy was gone. He wasn't taking any chances. I absolutely will NEVER be robbed or home invaded. :)

A video clip
https://youtu.be/LtqEEHryEUg
This video of "Fai Rumore" or "Make Noise" by Diodato, sung by him in the empty arena in Verona just came across my feed. I had chills and goosebumps all through it.
I already liked it for his voice, the sensitive and emotional lyrics, the equally sensitive and emotional performance, etc., but to hear it in the middle of the the Covid Crisis, in that empty, dark and then suddenly illuminated arena, well, it's a tour de force imo, "the" song for this period of our history.
He couldn't have known, of course, about Covid, about what would happen in Italy, to the people living there, to the people living in Europe and all around the world, but it's as if fate intervened. His loneliness, his sense of isolation, his pain and overpowering sense of loss, his feeling of not being able to support it any longer, and his yearning for the "noise" signifying the presence of another transforms into the feelings of many of us at this insupportable distance between us and other human beings.
"I can't bear this unnatural silence between you and me...I don't want to do without that beautiful noise that you make."
In the unbearable, unending silence of our cities, yes, we can come to miss even all the sometimes unpleasant and distracting sounds of modern urban life, because they signal the presence of humanity.

Just outstanding.
I love his face as well; if I find out he's not as sensitive and kind and sweet and vulnerable as his face would lead me to believe I'm going to be upset. :)
Stuvane: Well done and great choice with Clint. Leone's Spaghetti Westerns were and still are my favorites, The score's my Morriconne, Duel in "For a few Dollars more" and "Ecstasy of Gold" two of the greatest scores of all time. Of course Ecstasy of Gold leads to "The Final duel" in The Good, Bad and Ugly.

Leone and Morriconne teamed up for Once upon a time in the West as well, while It did not have Clint (young Charles Bronson), it did have Claudia Cardinale!!!
I agree, Palermo Trapani :)
There are some elements that explain the extraordinary effectiveness of Morricone's music:
1) Meanwhile, the extraordinary partnership between him and Sergio Leone. Perhaps not everyone knows that they knew each other and were friends since childhood, from school years. I think they almost read each other in thought and managed to anticipate their intentions. Having a mutual "feeling" is no small advantage when two heads combine to create something
2) the timing and the perfect synergy between images and music: in these masterpieces often the musical composition is born first (which can and must remain "autonomous"), while it is the images that "comment" the first, not the reverse. This was the case when filming the "Ecstasy of gold" sequence, when Tuco runs spasmodically between the graves of the cemetery in search of the hidden treasure. Leone, his troupe and Eli Wallach created the scene by listening to the relative piece of music that Morricone had already composed. In essence, the composer received only a few basic indications on the scene, but then he had carte blanche in the drafting of the music and Leone adapted the film accordingly. This is one of the reasons that also explain the "dilated" times of the films of Leone, in order to unfold fully the music.
3) Morricone's orchestration and arrangement technique made school, after him nothing was more the same than before. The skilful combination (and deliberate contamination) of "cultured" musical ensembles (symphonic orchestra, piano, organ ... choirs and solo voices, depersonalized, however, used as instruments, with almost metaphysical connotations) with more popular traditions and musical genres or recent or well-defined in an ethnic / exotic sense (classic and flamenco guitars, electric guitars, harmonica, zufoli, ocarinas, recorders, Jew's harps, honky tonk pianos, drums, various percussion instruments, whistles ...) and everything to generate magniloquent or sarcastic and grotesque effects. Obviously the choice is always prudent, nothing is given to chance and Morricone, a pupil of Goffredo Petrassi, and graduated not only in composition, but also in trumpet and band instrumentation, knows how to exploit the corroded tone of the trumpets and brasses to evoke military and violent atmospheres. He also uses the guitar to arouse sensuality, intimacy, anticipation, mystery or wink at the Hispanic-American tradition and the world of vaqueros, forefathers of cow-boys.
4 Last, but not least, the compositional technique. And here we understand that behind it there is a very solid academic music study and a lot of craft. Beyond the ingenious themes conceived, Morricone in his western soundtracks (especially those of the "Dollar Trilogy") takes up some tonal and harmonic elements that would have their roots in the ancient, gregorian and celtic musical tradition, that is, some modal scales , which to the modern and western ear, induce the idea of something suspended, archaic, indefinite. In Spaghetti westerns there are often Doric or Aeolian scales (minor scales at which the sixth degree is raised by a semitone, not the seventh as would be the practice with the minor harmonic scale). Or he omits that degree entirely, transforming it into a minor hexatonic scale. The effect is alienating, grandiose, even a little barbaric, it creates what I call a "Hispanidad" or "conquistadores" atmosphere, a bit Visigothic / Mozarabic.
Where instead the intimate, elegiac dimension imbued with melancholy and nostalgia (the main themes of "Once upon a time in the West" or "Duck, you ******!") Must prevail, Morricone becomes more traditional and classic, closer to the Western cultured music (descending phrases and harmonies that almost accompany the listener by the hand, wise use of the joint degrees in harmonic concatenations as required by organ and choral compositional practices, but also a clever use of the pedal point and / or harmonic revolts, suspensions or retardations, with which the listener is gradually "accustomed" to recognizing the theme that will then develop, or to anticipate it mentally).
A genius, period ;)

Stuvane:
Well written post. Leone's Western Genre, "The Spaghetti Westerns" were in fact much more realistic than most of the American Westerns that came before it, save maybe 1 movie, John Ford's The Searchers with John Wayne, young Natalie Wood, etc, which is among the great films in my view in the history of American film. I remember taking a film course in college and the Professor to his credit focused on the American Western Genre (among others) as he was as a big fan of Sam Peckinpah, and it sort of opened my eyes to analyzing film more deeply. Leon'e movies the Good, well he is not so good, he kills just like Tuco, the Ugly, and Angel Eyes the Bad. It in actuality is sort of "Grey". John Wayne's Ethan Character is probably the first film that really made the lead star Wayne a grey character, complex, not just the clean cut guy with the White hat riding into town to get the bad guys. The entire movie Wayne's character "Ethan" is planning on killing Natalie Wood's character (Little Debbie) and his entire quest is not rooted in justice and morality but revenge and only at the end when he lifts her up does he sort of come back to a sense of morality and justice. Complex movie with complex characters.
Leone's film even when you root for Clint Eastwood, as I did in all 3 movies "Fist full of Dollars", "Few dollars more" and "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly"you never really know his backstory, there is some honor in his character, but he is never clearly "Good" always sort of Grey. I think Clint took that basic character backstory from Leone's movies and he used it in later 70's and 80's Westerns like High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider..
etc.

charleston, south carolina (cnn):
president barack obama delivered a touching eulogy, a rousing political speech and a thoughtful meditation on race in america when he traveled to charleston, south carolina on friday to speak at the funeral of the rev. clementa pinckney, who was gunned down last week by a racist terrorist during bible study. but the president's speech will be remembered for a moment at the end when he launched into a solo of "amazing grace," that at first stunned the mourners and then brought them to their feet as they joined him in song. photos: remembering sen. clementa pinckney "as a nation, out of this terrible tragedy, god has visited grace upon us for he has allowed us to see where we've been blind," obama said. "he's given us the chance, where we've been lost, to find our best selves."

A lonely room and empty chair
Another day so hard to bear
The things around me that I see remind me of
The past and how it all used to be
From souvenirs to more souvenirs I live
With days gone by when our hearts had all to give
From souvenirs to more souvenirs I live
With dreams you left behind
I'll keep on turning in my mind
There'll never be another you
No one will share the worlds we knew
And now that loneliness has come to take your place
I close my eyes and see your face
From souvenirs to more souvenirs I live
With days gone by when our hearts had all to give
From souvenirs to more…
Demis has a very recognizable voice.

Well done with Melanie, had a serious crush on her as a kid, in fact I think she has Italian ancestry on her Maternal side. Close call with her and Laurie Partridge of the Partridge Family (great American TV show that ran 1970 to 1974). Of course all this is in the head of school kid.

All invited. Be Welcome (after end of pandemic, of course, lol). Take advantage of the invitation, because when a “mineiro” invites someone to visit his home, he hopes that the pretense guest will never show up and, the guest, knows that should not show up, lol. PS - A little bit out of topic:
I believe that in a few years, this greeting (Valeu Salento) will be only in the Brazilian language. The diglossia already exists in Brazil (the language talked by the people is different from that taught in schools). The Brazilian language will have the same fate as Afrikaaner, last one definitely apart from Dutch. I believe that the time has come for the Brazilian Academy of Letters to take care of the Brazilian language, spoken only in Brazil and, on the other hand, the Academy of Arts and Science of Lisbon will be free to take care of Portuguese, the last one, a more global language spoken in Europe and other countries, newly emancipated. Our brothers from Uruguay and Paraguay, who, along with Spanish, also consider Portuguese an official language in some regions, in the future they may also adopt Brazilian as an official language. It is not just the Italian-Brazilians who defend this idea. As a Portuguese-Brazilian, I always defended it.

It depends on the Roman-Hellenic ratio vibe they emanate and the impression I get.

Men have been known to hire musicians, or at least have their friends come with them. Not quite the same, though.

Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation.
We're fighting for our right to live. To exist.
And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

Thanks by ABBA and for many other things, Sweden. Queen Silvia Is from Portuguese ancestry also and her paternal family livided in São Paulo between 1947 and 1957.
”Her maternal grandfather was Artur Floriano de Toledo (1873-1935), a descendant of King Afonso III of Portugal (https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afonso_III_de_Portugal) and his concubine Maria Peres de Enxara. Artur was the great-grandson of Antónia de Almeida de Aguiar, descendant of noble families established in São Paulo, during the Portuguese colonial period, among them the Alvarenga family from Lamego, Portugal. She is also of very distant Brazilian Amerindian descent. One of his ancestors was the indigenous chief of the Tupiniquim (https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupiniquim) , Tibiriçá (https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibiri%C3%A7%C3%A1)de Piratininga. Yetos/Regio X: Thumbs up to both of you, I was just coming here to pay tribute to Ennio. Some of my best memories as a kid was watching Sergio Leone's Clint Eastwood trilogy (Firstfull of Dolars, Few Dollars more, and the Good, the Bad and the Ugly) along with Once Upon a Time in the West (Where I first fell in love with Claudia Cardinale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and his musical scores to all 4 of those films.
Cinema Paradiso was filmed where my Mothers Father was born, as was her Mother's Father.

Pink Floyd is one of my favorites bands. I went to the Show of Roger Waters here in Belo Horizonte, with my son, at Mineirão Stadium. Memorable. :good_job::smile:

We both have good taste for music @PT. In these difficult times that we are living , when I'm not working, I'm listening to music. I travel mentally listening to music. I love rock'n’roll, from its roots in the USA. Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Beatles (British that have an American soul), for me are Gods. My son is a metalhead who loves the Beatles and Brazilian Popular Music and also plays a lot of guitar. I am a drooling father, lol. My kid is more eclectic than me.
