Lovely; like being transported back in time.
Disturbed: Sound of Silence. I had no idea he has such a glorious voice, and what a performance. Simon and Garfunkel tried to warn us; now it's really here. So, I guess it's clear what kind of mood I'm in about the trajectory of this country.

Angela: Castellucci is another one that can drop the BASS, in fact, he is one of the few I have heard that matched Tim Faust of Home Free. Avi Kaplan, formerly of Pentatonix is another guy that is in Castellucci and Faust's Bass range.
I just realized that Austin Brown has his own youtube channel (and site) where he sings alone except for a wonderful guitarist. WHY didn't I know this?
I am seriously fangirling on him, and no, not because of his choirboy good looks and sweet essence They're wonderful covers.
Do yourself a favor and listen to all of these. I'll probably have them on a loop all day.
It takes a brave man to attempt a cover of Unchained Melody, but he does a wonderful job.

Angela: I saw that, I haven't checked his solo site yet. Kind of hope this is not a signal he is going to try to go solo as a singer. Hard to find 5 guys that compliment each other and are so versatile and able to integrate each strengths into 1 song and do it acapella.

Sorry, I've been out of the power to upvote all morning.
As I said in the prior post, is there anything Eddy Redmayne can't do? And shout outs to Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks and the rest of the cast.
I love that song too. Gives me the chills every time I hear it. This story never gets old for me, and my father read it to me when I was young and then I saw it twice on Broadway, crying buckets both times. (That and "The Count of Monte Cristo". They should do a musical of that as well.) Then I went to see the movie in theaters, and bought the DVD, which my daughter and I would watch every once in a while. I miss her a lot and was thinking of those times so I decided to watch it again.
By no means do I excuse the excesses of what came after, but I understand viscerally why the ancien regime had to go.

Maneskin's Zitti e Buoni (Be quiet and good) is going to represent Italy for Eurovision 2021. Love that it's rock, really liked the music, think they're all good performers, especially the lead, and the styling is stupendous (great looks as well, as usual). Hope they bring at least the violinists to Eurovision.
Do I like the lyrics? As someone who hates drugs and what they do to people, no, but it's a reality for people; the anger, the feeling of alienation, the pain that only drugs seems to free them from.
I also likee Irama, Erma Meta, Annalisa and Madame. Sorry to all the Michielin fans, but I thought she sounded as if she needed autotune, and I don't like Fedez; too brutal for me normally.
I'll provide the English translation. Has the actual finale been posted? This is all I could find.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OISmX4vOKA
It's from lyrics translate (actually touch your testicles to be precise, but whatever)
"And good evening, ladies and gentlemenActors on the scene
You better touch wood
You better be nice and quiet
People here are odd, like pushers
I spent too many nights locked out
Now I'm going around kicking on the doors
Looking upwards, like climbers
So, I'm sorry mom if I'm always out, but
I'm out of my mind, just not like them
And you're out of your mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them
No
I have written pages over pages
I've seen salt and then tears
These men on their cars
Unable to climb against the rapids
Carved on a gravestone
"There's no god in my home"
But if you understand the meaning of time
You'll rise back up from your oblivion
And no wind can stop
Natural power
From the right point of view
You can feel the euphoria brought by the wind
With wings of wax on my back
I'll seek out that height
If you're trying to stop me, try again
Try and cut my head off
Because
I'm out of my mind, just not like them
And you're out of your mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them
People talk, unfortunately
They talk, and they don't know what they're talking about
Just take me where I can stay afloat
'Cause here I can't breathe
People talk, unfortunately
They talk, and they don't know what they're talking about
Just take me where I can stay afloat
'Cause here I can't breathe
People talk, unfortunately
They talk, and they don't know what the **** they're talking about
Just take me where I can stay afloat
'Cause here I can't breathe
But I'm out of my mind, just not like them
And you're out of your mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them
We're out of our mind, just not like them

Thanks for the lyrics Angela!
Not my favourite Sanremo of all time but I still thoroughly enjoyed the week. I particularly appreciated Irama's song but he wasn't allowed to sing live as someone in his team had tested positive for Covid. I paricularly enjoyed the song from Madame, perhaps a little too esoteric for some. And Extraliscio just made me forget all my woes and dance myself into a frenzy. I'm passionate about anything containing Italian folk vibes on steroids.
Those who are fans of the festival should see the Thursday night show, featuring covers of famous Italian autore. Maneskin (meaning moonlight in Danish) were incredible singing Amandoti with Manuel Agnelli.
Original edit worked. Apologies

Finale version came up. WOW! I don't go for Nude look usually, but what can I say...they looked gorgeous. :)

On reflection, perhaps it isn't really drug use necessarily that he's explaining.
As I said above, I liked Irama's song as well, and Madame's.
I wish they had sung Amandoti alone; Damiano David was divine, but he and Agnelli didn't really sound right together, imo.
... the only reason that song won is because the young people were all home (covid restrictions), .... and they're the ones with the quick voting fingers!
I find it shocking that songs with swears , and the winner wasn't the only one, are authorized to compete in such “family” oriented venue.
And it doesn't resemble any kind of “Italian Melody” style at all.
... maybe catchy,... but it’s old fashioned American Hard Rock.
Well, I'm not young, and I really liked it, but perhaps I'm not typical. I actually also really like rock of any kind, even hard rock, or "glam" rock, and from what I have been able to tell over the years so do a lot of Italians.
They made Dave Grohl cry by coming from all over Italy to do this...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JozAmXo2bDE&t=2s
Why should Italian singers and musicians be excluded from the world of rock? They certainly perform a lot of rap. I think these guys should translate it into English and release it world wide.
There shouldn't just be one kind of "Italian song", imo. Italian music has been influenced since the Middle Ages by music from other countries; otherwise why did we have quadriglias and gigas and later on Italian polkas and valtzers and tangos. The Italian ballad is a marvelous thing, and I'm a great lover of it, but so is Northern Choral singing, and I think Italian performers should be able to compose and sing jazz or pop, or rock or rap, or as in this case, a combination of rap and rock if they choose. Of course, I'm speaking as someone who adores rock, including hard rock. I also very much like some of the songs which incorporate Middle Eastern influences.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. :)
imho ... it should have won, ... a song more in line with our present time:
The Pharmacist
... with Italian lyrics:
https://youtu.be/ie99NOabwTA
... from Sanremo, though on the night of the final he dressed-up as Clark Kent / Superman :)
https://youtu.be/MTM48g400Zk
@Angela
I like Rock too :)
... but I expect Sanremo to be an Italian Style Melody competition, ... there are other venues for the alternatives,
... I guess, the more time passes by, the more I become a man out of my time :) lol
As I said, we'll have to agree to disagree. :) I found the lyrics and the melody in the Max Gazze song rather simplistic and almost like a child's song.
I also disagree that there isn't a history of Italian rock.
OK
... so the song with swears is more intellectual and not as childish as the song I like :)

Winners of Eurovision for Zitti e Buoni, and a song they perform in English.

EDIT: what the hell, you can't write the word "B-uy* or "Pro-cure"?

The majority of the popular vote went to the bands that performed rock music.
Maybe people are finally sick of the plastic, **** junk performed by people who aren't musicians or singers at all.
I wonder if they would ever consider putting out an English language version of Zitti e Buoni. Shut up and behave is catchy in English too! :)
(Didn't know Khan had opined on them or rock in general. Would never go to him for music advice anyway. They're creating a storm worldwide even with an Italian song. Can't imagine if it were in English. I think we're seeing the birth of an international star.)

The whole song exuded charisma. Maneskin slayed it. Knowing Italian the lyrics were quite relevant, and even prescient, considering the british journalists baseless allegations later... La gente parla, ma non sa di ce parla...
But I would say some of the pop/vocal songs were quite enjoyable. I might sound biased bringing up Switzerland, but Gjon had a fantastic performance, vocally and not only.
Not your typical pop, but then again French pop never is.

I watched the entire show in full and this year's entries were just awful, compared to previous years. The Italian band played decent rock music and they have the right attitude that they exhibited in the post-contest interviews, reminding me of good old metal bands from the 1980s. Understandably, the band got most of the popular vote. It wasn't a difficult choice to make.

I don't know why Eurovision doesn't put an English translation of the lyrics on a banner. They do it for opera; they can't do it for Eurovision songs? Whether some people like it or not, a lot of Europeans know English, and it would give them a better appreciation of the songs. I realize most of the songs are ridiculous, but still...at least for Maneskin, where the lyrics are actually poetic and meaningful, it would help reach more people.
Maneskin is blowing up youtube. They're going to be huge. Listen to "Torna a Casa", "Coraline, Coraline", or "I wanna be your slave", which is in English. I even like Damiano's cover of "Back to Black" from years ago. They're only 20, 21, and 22. They can go so far.
Sorry, the Swiss performer had a decent voice, although he lost the pitch a few times (that's what happens to some performers when it's live, not studio massaged), but what the hell was up with the hand and arm thing? It ruined the whole song for me. Did he never look at himself performing that way in a mirror? What about his manager? He looked like an octopus or the blow up figures used in American advertising. The only two that were worse were Iceland trying to prove definitively that Nordic people can't dance and have no rhythm, and Ukraine holding some sort of Pagan Pow Wow.
Good grief.
I did like the French entry, and Finland, and a few others.

Friends and enemies
On my horrifying back
How nicely I'd raise them up
As if they were passengers.
Little white sheet of mine,
Crazy lamp of mine,
What love, I wonder, blows us,
Put in your shadow
That kid
That tonight doesn't have
Anywhere to go.
Like beans, I count
The hunchback's words,
Behind the white cloth,
In the coffin.
Fast as you … !

Usually either some wave music, or classical music, which I started to find very attractive to listen to lately.
I haven't listened to anyone but Maneskin for three days. I admit it; I'm obsessed. My consolation is that I'm not the only one. The internet has blown up: tik tok, instagram, youtube, spotify. Their original song is number ten globally, and most of the world hasn't seen it, while in some European countries up to four of their songs are in the top ten, including studio rehearsal sessions and covers.
Speaking of covers. This cover by Damiano of Amandoti...well, I lack words. It's infinitely better than the original and even better than Gianna Nannini's. I chose the video with the English translation superimposed so you can't see his beautiful face and incredibly emotional facial expressions, but at least everyone can understand the words.

Was listening to a very beautiful (and difficult) aria of Griselda (1735), by Antonio Vivaldi: Agitated by two wings.
https://journalofmusic.com/news/its-really-exciting-sing-it-has-its-challenges-emma-morwood-arias-griselda
"(...) Like the violin concertos, the opera too has exciting writing for strings, but there’s one surprise: he expects the singers to do what a violin does.
‘It’s very challenging,’ soprano Emma Morwood told the Journal of Music. ‘It challenges all of the singers… it is slightly violinistic… with the repeated notes and the range that’s required.’ Morwood, from Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland but now based in Edinburgh, has the role of Costanza and has the most famous aria from the opera, ‘Agitata da due venti’ (‘Agitated by two winds’), which is also one of the most difficult. (...)
'The work requires runs of semi-quavers and dozens of repeated notes, as well as a range going from the G below middle C right up to a high B-flat. The key to learning it, says Morwood, was to give it time.I’ve been working on these arias for quite a long time… It’s getting it into your body… You need to get the muscular memory and the strength. (...)"

One of Maneskin's metal like songs, with English subtitles on screen. Not my favorite, but a good FIGHTING song. Oh, if cursing bothers you, don't watch.
(Btw, their cover of "Beggin", completely transformed, is number 1 globally on Spotify, and "I wanna be your slave" is number 8. Both songs are scorching the charts in most of Europe. I understand it, since they're both in English, but their Italian songs are so much better. Damiano is a genius lyricist, as well as having a phenomenal voice and incredible stage charisma.)

Absolutely true. It was still actual music into the 80s, but after that everything went downhill.
Younger people are shocked, as you say, that people know how to play instruments, and that singers didn't used to need auto-tune. That's one reason why I'm so obsessed with our new Italian rock band. They're better live than recorded. Also, it gives me hope that, as Damiano said when they won Eurovision: Rock Will Never Die. :)

Yes, I finished HS in the early 1980's, lots of good bands then that I liked, some sort of where alternative rock type bands from the late 1970's that got more popular in the early 1980's, B-52's, The Pretenders, Blondie, The Ramones, The Clash, and some acts that are pure 1980's from mid to the later part of the decade (i.e., Bon Jovi). Of course, some were established bands or some solo acts who use to be in Bands (i.e. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, Paul McCartney leaving Wings) that were still dong well into the 1980's.
In the 1990's, only a few acts to me have stood the test of time, such as Alanis Morrissette and Natalie Merchant (i.e. Mercante) but it sort of was the "The Last Picture Show" to use a movie analogy of music.

Just a single swallow and spring is all costly too
to get the sun back here it needs much work ado
Needed are thousands dead ones working at the wheels
needed are yet the living shedding their blood with zeal
Oh my Master Builder God, in amongst mountains You built me
oh my Master Builder God, round with all seas You girded me!
Taken away by sages the body of May now slain
and in a sepulchre out in open seas it’s lain
in an abysmal well it’s kept enclosed all through
all of the darkness scented, all of the abyss too
Oh my Master Builder God, in amongst lilacs there You are

Fifty-six years ago, and yet capable of giving me goosebumps today. Some music doesn't age.

It's a change of pace, but it popped up on my feed. I adore this group, and particularly the lead singer: Damiano.
Every one of their live performances at this venue is terrific, but this song just tears your heart out. It tears his heart out too, as you can tell. Instead of walking around and owning the stage in the high energy way he usually does, he owns it in another way: through his stillness, his absolute concentration on what it means to him. Just beautiful, as is he.
There are English subtitles on screen.

Their latest song, "Mamma Mia" is a banger, funny, an ironic send up of stereotypes about Italians, but so overtly sexual that I blushed even though I was alone; altogether too much for someone with my imagination. :)

All great songs, and bands! I love Hardcore Punk and Thrash metal, as well as the cross-over variety!
I like to think of my avatar as having blue hair, because the lion is a punk rocker.

That is so cool! I love this song; really, I love that whole era of music, as well as the 70s and 80s.
God, The Boss looks and sounds so good, and look at Steve Van Zandt! :)
Incredible the amount of great music that has come out of Jersey.

I’m listening to my favorite soundtrack from the series "Big Little Lie". Cold Little Heart - Michael Kiwanuka. I just love this song. When I hear it, I immediately relax, disconnect from the outside world and are morally transported to the coast of Australia. I don't know how it works, before that no soundtrack from the movie or series affected me like that. Sometimes I want to watch this series again just because every series starts with this song.
Freddie doesn't really need music behind him to give him reference points; beautiful, just beautiful.

I love listening to rapcore and metalcore.
Lady Gaga looks just beautiful here and her performance is STUPENDOUS. Can we also hear it for Tony Bennet, so old and frail, battling Alzheimer's and yet still singing. You can see the love between them, and it's so touching.

This has now become my favorite version of one of my favorite Christmas songs. They are just magnificent. Whether you believe it or not is almost irrelevant; it makes me emotional every time I hear it.

Even after Vatican 2 we always sang this in Latin. The older I get, the more I appreciate Bing Crosby's voice, and given how my parents adored him, he came to signify Christmas for me. His voice couldn't be better in this...
