I listen to bands/singers who are about 8+ years old. Most modern singers/bands I've found sound as if they're skinning a live cat... sorry to those that like them, but a vast majority are wretched singers. Pretty faces don't take away from nails-on-chalkboard voices or absolutely stupid/meaningless lyrics. I have a well developed ear for music {I listen from classic / opera all the way through to country and rap... and everything in between} seeing as a number of my family members happen to be in the music business - including one uncle who is a world-known music producer.
As a woman I prefer harder music - rap, metal, etc.
I was listening to Coolio's Gangster's Paradise last night [closer to real rap than that sh*t West does]; though the only real rapper was Tupac.
This morning I was listening to a European band that I am quite biased to. The lead singer is a previous lover [yes, I'll admit, still an occasional on/off] & we've remained very good friends since [and friendly with the band]. The story how we met still [a decade later] makes me laugh... we originally met in Europe at a hotel. He was leaving the lobby, I was going in and we collided but he being 6'2" to my 5'3" knocked me on my ass. He didn't originally apologize, was dragged out by his colleages [band mates], though two days later at the hotel's bar [my cousins talked me into having a drink due to wedding I had attended, I rarely drink] he blundered through an apology-introduction combination.
Anything with guns n roses :D
I've heard this multiple times a day for weeks. It's fun, and catchy, and hopeful. So, what's not to like.

An oldie but a goodie...Sempre e Per Sempre...Always and Forever
The rain and the sun
They change
People's faces
Can create a hell in your heart
They leave and then they return
And they never stop
You are always and forever
Remember
Wherever you are
If you seek me, I'll be there
Always and forever
By your side
I have seen people leave, get lost, and then return
And then leave again
Extending a hand...empty handed
With the same shoes walking different roads
Or with different shoes walking the same road
You mustn't' believe it
If someone tells you that
I'm not the same anymore
The rain and the sun bark and bite
But they pass
True love can be hidden
It can be confused
But it can never, ever be lost, never
Always and Forever
By your side
Always and Forever
By your side

I've recently been watching the video of Placido Domingo's Tosca, directed by Zubin Mehta. It was a sensation when it was done (well, among opera aficionados) because it was done in real time in the precise locations mentioned in the opera. It's available at Amazon and it's a good introduction for neophytes because it has English subtitles.

David Garrett performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor. It's a fresh approach to one of my favorite pieces of music of any type. The definitive version for me personally, however, is that of Issac Stern, which I've linked to below. I'll see what Joshua Bell does with it at the Philharmonic.

A resounding success!
"Like the Violin Concerto itself, Bell offered no surprises. But his popularity, and that of the piece, is due to his excellence as a musician. He played with a singing tone, a light, almost vocalized, dynamic, and with a fluid agility that he pushed to some delightful extremes of tempo. The concerto speaks naturally to him, with it’s soulfulness, humor, and moments of stirring sadness. The standing ovation that followed was almost de rigeur, but not undeserved. - See more at: http://newyorkclassicalreview.com/2015/12/gilbert-philharmonic-wrap-year-with-dark-sibelius-popular-mendelssohn-and-unexpected-encore/#sthash.nJ4UK5u1.dpuf"
Still not Isaac Stern, however, in my opinion.
Sibellius' 4th Symphony was also on the bill of fare. It was beautifully done, but not my cup of tea at all: if you're going through a dark time, or even if you're not, this could push you over the edge. :(

For some reason, in thinking of the past, this also came to mind, from an even earlier time. Ever since I heard it again in the film La meglio gioventù, which I've watched numerous times, it's always near the surface of my mind.

If you do go to Toscana, this is my own little guide. :) Perhaps it could prove helpful.

My ancestry is only partly Tuscan, but Firenze is, along with Genova and Parma, and perhaps even more than they, the city of my mind, my heart, and my soul.
To put you in the mood:
Here is "Firenze Sogna", or Florentine Dreams. This was still dance music in the time of my parents; they absolutely loved it. I can even remember learning to dance to it (and songs like it), with my stocking feet on top of my father's shoes. Sometimes nostalgia has such a piercing sweetness it seems you could die of it...Well, enough of that. Here it is, and if you click on cc the English subtitles appear on screen.

If you do go, " Will you bring a kiss to Florence?" :)
"I was leaving one morning by steamship,
there was a gentleman of some age.
Seeing him I say: Excuse me, sir!
Forgive me, you're from Florence, yes I know.
You're going back home happily, well I see it,
and a small favor I ask of you.
Will you bring a kiss to Florence,
that is my city
and in my heart I always have it.
Will you bring a kiss to Florence,
I work only to see it again one day.
I'm a daughter of an immigrant,
for this I am faraway,
I work because one day I will return home.
Will you bring a kiss to Florence,
if I see you again, I'll give it back.
And that gentleman replied to me then,
I will bring your kiss home.
And for peace of mind since this time,
traveling I will keep it locked up.
But as soon as I get home I swear to you,
the kiss toward the sky will surely go.
I'll bring your kiss to Florence
that is your city
but also it's mine.
I'll bring your kiss to Florence
I am looking forward to when you'll be back.
You are the daughter of an immigrant,
for this you are far away,
but be sure one day you'll come back home.
I'll bring your kiss to Florence
and from Florence many kisses you'll get."

I was in a Jussi Bjorling mood again last night: Handel's Ombra Mai Fu-Never Was A Shade
"Tender and beautiful fronds
of my beloved plane tree,
let Fate smile upon you.
May thunder, lightning, and storms
never disturb your dear peace,
nor may you by blowing winds be profaned.
Never was a shade
of any plant
dearer and more lovely,
or more sweet."
It's proof that you can create divine music even about a tree. :)
First, Bjorling's beautiful version, and then as sung by a counter tenor and thus perhaps closer to what it sounded like originally, as it was written for a castrato.

Well, I'm not listening to him now, but I listened to him last night. He's more a late night, little light, kind of guy. Here's "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen. I love him more now than when I was first introduced to his music. Maybe you need to have lived, and loved, and lost a bit before you can really appreciate him. One of the three great poets of "modern" American/Canadian music, in my opinion, along with Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. He's still going strong at 80 as you can see. I think he'd still be touring even if he hadn't been swindled out of most of his money. He always had "IT", and he's still got "IT". What a man.

In honor of the arrival of a Broadway play ("Get On Your Feet") based on the life of Gloria Estefan, here are some of her best. These should melt the frozen! :) (I saw some of the promos and unfortunately, in my opinion, the star of the play doesn't hold a candle to Gloria, so this will be a pass for me.)
Conga, from decades ago:

A Spanish language song of hers that I really like:
Con los Años Que Me Quedan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBM3RlgjhQQ
After that, I was in a Spanish language mood so from the "Old World" I was listening to Piensa En Mi, by Luz Casal, which I've liked since I first heard it in the Pedro Almodóvar film " Tacones lejanos" (High Heels). There are better versions available for the sound quality, but on this one the English translation appears on screen. (His films are not for everyone but he's always interesting. My favorite of his films, and one of the least "out there", is "Volver" with Penelope Cruz. It's really wonderful, in my opinion.)

Billy Joel is playing Madison Square Garden again. I still listen to him regardless. This is one of my favorites. His diction isn't always great, so for non-native English speakers this is a version with the English lyrics on screen along with an Italian translation.

I tried watching the FOX Live Version of "Grease" last night. Can anyone spell awful? The performers all looked like they were over 35 with lined, overly thin faces, they weren't in sync, no energy; it was just sad. To get rid of the memory I went to youtube. This is what it's supposed to be like. I must say, this is one area where European teenagers miss out compared to American teenagers. No Homecoming Dance, no Junior Prom or Senior Ball, no pep rallies for the school football or basketball team. Those are good memories.
I think only Kevin Bacon in Footloose comes close to matching John Travolta in this.

For the thinking man. Or woman. :) The lyrics are so important that I chose a video where they appear on screen. "Slip Slidin' Away"-Simon and Garfunkel. Bizet: CARMEN ~ Toreador

The complete DVD also includes the following as well as more modern Itaian songs like Marina and L'Italiano.
"Nino Rota's Love Theme from "The Godfather". I adore this song, and have never heard it played so expressively. "Strangers in Paradise", which is the Borodin theme used in "Kismet".
"La Paloma".
"Puccini's "O Mio Bambino Caro", sung by Carmen Monarca.
"Franz von Suppé's "The Light Cavalry".
"Johann Strauss' "Lagune Waltz".
"Johann Strauss' rousing polka "Thunder and Lightening".
"Offenbach's "Barcarole" sung by Carla and Carmen.
"The Rose".
"Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
" Rossini's "William Tell Overture".
It's a DVD that's more than worth the approximately ten dollar price at Amazon, not only for the lovely music, but for the setting and the wonderful audience reactions.

I call this "music for the end of the world". It's Verdi's Requiem. It's a toss up for me whether I prefer Verdi's or Motzart's.
Anyway, here is a short selection, the "Dies Irae", or "Day of Wrath", performed with great passion and brilliance by the Moscow State Symphony under Claudio Vandelli.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDFFHaz9GsY
This is the entire piece as beautifully directed by Maazel and sung by Pavarotti, among others.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ga26Lxw9RE
This is an interesting fact about the Verdi Requiem...
"The Requiem was performed 16 times between 1943 and 1944 by prisoners in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theresienstadt) (also known as Terezín) under the direction of Rafael Schächter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Sch%C3%A4chter). The performances were extraordinary on several counts: first, they had only a single vocal score with piano accompaniment, so every part had to be learned from memory; second, they practised in a dark, cold, damp basement with only a broken piano after long days of forced labour; and third, as the performances took place over an extended period, many of the singers were removed by the Nazis and had to be replaced. The final performance particularly provided a basis for dignified self-expression as well as attempting to symbolically communicate the circumstances at the camp to a visiting International Red Cross delegation in 1944."
Of course, nobody gave a damn.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Requiem_%28Verdi%29
It was written to commemorate the death of Manzoni.

There is a long long time to go for that Angela....millions of generations yet. They are both great. While Verdis seem to be a more complex work and maybe more melodramatic, I find Motzarts requim easier to listen to and more pleasant. Its just a matter of opinion really

It depends how soon he tires of us, or so I used to think. :)
As to the two pieces of music, which one I play depends on my mood. I play the Verdi when I'm angry about some new outrage, the moments when I literally would look forward to the Judge coming to throw the evil into the flames for all eternity. I find it cathartic. :)
"Death and Nature shall stand amazed,
when all Creation rises again
to answer to the Judge. Mezzo-soprano and Chorus:
A written book will be brought forth,
which contains everything
for which the world will be judged.
Therefore when the Judge takes His seat,
whatever is hidden will be revealed:
nothing shall remain unavenged.
The day of wrath, that day will
dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl prophesied...
Anyway, I love this Libera Me with Leontine Price and Von Karajan:
Soprano and Chorus: Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved: when you will come to judge the world by fire; I tremble, and I fear the judgment and the wrath to come, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved; The day of wrath, that day of calamity and misery; a great and bitter day, indeed.; Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them; Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day. Deliver me, O Lord, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved; when you will come to judge the world by fire; Deliver me, Lord, from eternal death on that awful day. Deliver me.

Same for me, although I usually turn to groups like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, or the Beach Boys.

Same for me, although I usually turn to groups like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, or the Beach Boys.
I recently saw "Jersey Boys" the movie. I also saw the stage show. The show is better, but they're both a lot of fun.
I have the original cast CD of the stage show. It's great. Can't find it on youtube, but these guys are pretty good.
The original guys are the best, of course:

Listen To Your Heart-Laura Pausini
I've loved her voice for years, and there are so many songs of hers that I like. This one is particularly nice. (For Spanish speakers, she almost always does a Spanish language version of her songs.)
Hey, how are you now?
Betrayed by a story that has ended
and in front of you the way out
you feel alone
there is no one to listen to you
who shares your problems with you
never! don't change!
stay as you are
follow your destiny
because all the pain that you have inside
can never cancel your path
and now you'll discover
that the story of our every minute
belongs only to us
but not if you still remain
lost without a reason
in a sea of 'why'
listen to your heart inside of you
and in the silence you'll find the words
close your eyes and then go away
try to come to the planet of your heart
it's difficult to know
the right thing to do
if emotion hits you in the head
the pride that takes you
the nights in which remorse wakes you up
for fear of making an error
but if you find yourself
without a star to follow
don't ever give up
Believe in yourself! Listen to your heart!
do what it says, even if it makes you suffer
close your eyes, and let yourself go
try to fly over this pain
You won't deceive yourself
if you listen to your heart
open your arms to touch
every hand, every hope, every dream that you want
because later it will take you to every heart
every time that you don't know what to do
try to fly, to the planet of the heart
you, you, try to fly
to the planet of your heart

Laura Pausini and Biagio Antonacci: Tra te e il mare-Between you and the sea
With so many modern singers their stage performances stink because they don't actually have good voices. That's never an issue with Laura. I don't know why she hasn't been able to crack the English language market. She's certainly done superlatively well with the Spanish language market, with 3 Latin Grammys, and huge sales and cult following all over Latin America.
Anyway, here's the English translation.
"I'm not afraid of you anymore
You’re all my life
I live on the breath you leave here
Which I consume while you’re away
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t stay quiet and wait any longer
Me, who would have lived with you
In your foreign looking city
Alone, with the instinct of someone who knows how to love
Alone, however always with you
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t feel tired of waiting any longer
No, no, darling
I don’t agree
Either you come back or you stay there
I don’t live anymore
I don’t dream anymore
I’m scared, help me
Darling, I don’t believe you anymore
Each time you leave
You swear to me it’ll be the last one
I prefer to say good bye to you
At night, I look in every star for a reflection of you
But all of this is not enough for me, I’m growing up now
No, no, darling
I don’t agree
Either you come back or you stay there
I don’t live anymore
I don’t dream anymore
I’m scared, help me
Darling, I don’t believe you anymore
Each time you leave
You swear to me it’ll be the last one
I prefer to say good bye to you
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore
I can’t stay quiet and wait anymore
I can’t divide myself between you and the sea anymore"

Interesting details,Yet,as usual.
EDIT:
The Romanians from Southern Poland(the Polish documents recorded at least 500 villages in 1600),
had used the Vlach Law until the end of the 18th century,I'm sure that their descendants
,the Gorals, had preserved plenty of important customs.
From Stanislaw Lukasik,"Pologne et Roumanie":
Early records:in 1390,Giurgio from Stupnica, called Voyvoda Wallachorum
bishop Kiryllo Woloszyn from Przemysl(1353)
Ladomir the Vlach founds a village under the Vlach Law in Hodle Pole(1378)
Romanian toponyms in Poland:Wlochy(vlah); Malice(mal); Czaniec ( Cenac); Katyna (catina - 1566);
Sekul ( sec - 1582); Hotar ( hotar - 1676); Magura ( magura); Turbacz ( turbat); Sipot ( sipot);
; Roztoka (rastoaca); Ratunda (rotunda); Baltagul (baltag); Sulica (sulita); Stanka (stânca);
Sekatura (secatura); Zawoja (zavoi); Syhla(sihla); Bradul(brad); Pinu( pin); Cetynia (cetina);
Czuta (ciuta); Czerbul (cerb); Capul ( tap); Bacza (de la baci); Waratyk (varatic);
Tomnatyk (tomnatic); Paszuna ( pasune); Stynawa (stâna); Tarlo (târla); Strunga ( strunga);
Staneszcze (stâniste); Koliba (coliba); Mierydzna (merinda); Urdowa (urda)
EDIT2:
Although the dance is not Romanian, but Central European(Polish,Slovak?,Hungarian?),
it incorporates certain Balkanic features, for instance the paces that start at 0:35,
in other words,we see the Goral interpretation of it.
EDIT3:
Ivanko was the ultimate Balkanic Desperado;as a Vlach,he was born to be sure.
EDIT3.1
It seems that EDIT3 wasn't clear enough(that time either).
OK, the text(from the first link) clearly indicates that he wasn't that sure;
besides,he switched sides often, from the Bulgarian to the Byzantine one.

After the destruction of minor Asia and exchange of population at 1923 unemployment was everywhere,
Greeks as naval nation already had moved to America, but was a strange feeling there, church of Ai Nikolas at liberty street was already from 1832, at the heart of Manhattan among the 9/11 twin towers.
but the unemploiment and the conomical problems of a continoued war that started from 1904 Balkan wars and ended at 1923 (19 years) with exchange of population kneeled down South and East balkans and minor Asia,
so Greeks started to seek solution at migrating to 'America',
Elia Kazan had a film about that at 1963
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkqKHapqda4
I have a friend who's origin is from Pontos, when the exchange happened, his grand father's sister, married a USA sailor from Chicago above the ship that brought them from Pontos to Greece,
later at 2004 a story of 700 νυφες nyfe, neve, women to marry, that travel with the same boat from Con/polis to USA, become a movie,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbigR6gRGLU
that created also a reaction, cause it become ethos, common use, until 1935.
Greek and other Balkanic young boys moving to America to make 'dollaria', at the age of 16-18 and at age about 35-40 were asking a bride from their home origin, to make family,
the travel lines were so common that even from Peiraias, Patrai and Thessaloniki ships were traveling to USA,
as you will se at the bellow video link at 2:37 there were even Greek lines straight to Quebec Canada,
All you needed is to stay days outside the USA and Canada embassy and ambassadors to wait your turn for pappers
at 1935 a song was record and published
the music composer was 'Σαλονικιος', (The-Salonique origin) one of the 2 best violin players of that time,
his real name was Δημητριος Σεμσης Dimitris Semsis (Semses) and his origin was from Strumnitsa (Στρωμνιτσα) today Fyrom.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWYu1rZwoR4
I can post 2 videos so I link the official record above
I choose to post the same song as it is recorded with Τσαμπουνα, zampogna in italian, a king of Guida, pipes, Ασκαυλος, that is found at South Italy and Aegean pelagos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbigR6gRGLU
so the song is 'Μη με στελνεις μανα, στην Αμερικη'
'Don't send me, mammy, to America'.
from the lyricks,
μην με στελνεις μανα στην Αμερικη,
γιατι θα μαραζωσω και θα πεθανω εκει,
' Dont' send mother to America,
cause I 'll got depress and I will die there'
Δολλαρια δεν θελω πως να σου το πω,
καλια ψωμι κρεμμυδι και αυτον που αγαπω.
' Ι Do n't want dollars, how can I tell you that
better bread and onions and the one I love'
much later at 40-50s a new migration road opened
Australia,
it easier to get pappers, and easier to find work,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Yte3dfKsM
the dance rythm is μπαλλος (ballos) a dance commonly at south Aegean pelago.
After Australia a new migration Road opens, it is 'by far' near and work is certain, Deutschland of Antenauer,
from 50's and 60's Germany is absorving not only Greeks, but all South Europeans, Balkans and Turkey youth, but they prefered married couples so the 'brides' is not repeated.
the composer Ακης Πανου Akis Panou was borned at Athens at 1933, and his music is affected by pontian Greeks that were plenty at his neighborhood.
the song is Στο Σταθμο του Μοναχου, ' At Munchen's train station'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkJYQL6GYRI
the style of song is rempetiko,
Lyricks
'At Munich train station
my 'black fate' tηrew me (forgot me),
my poor missery 'bad fate' mother
beside me a hungry hippy is sleeping
and a drunken 'black'
all the shipwrecks (jetsam) of 'life'

Wow. Everything is definitely culturally conditioned. That doesn't look anything like the kind of similar dancing with which I'm familiar. No offense, but I don't see anything seductive or charming in that particular male Romanian dancer. Beckoning a girl to the dance floor by crooking a finger at her in that domineering, aggressive way? Grabbing her by the arm and dragging her onto the dance floor? If my father and brothers didn't take care of it, I would have...:)
Plus, in my opinion, seduction should go both ways, and no touching until the woman has made her choice. :)

I see you're more into opera nowadays.
Bulgarians Irish and Russians made traditional dance to a show, an opera as yopu said.
the video you post is a more like a show than an ordianry wedding or fiesta panigiri dance, like the Russians had once the famous Ballet shows, etc etc
dance is to have fun, and burn the callories from fiesta food, and raise your heart beats, worm up your body, and blood circulation,
well a good dancer sometimes dance to earn the girl, but that mainly at wending dances.
if villagers dance like that then after 1-2 dances they will be dead.

I definitely enjoy the Vlach ballet that starts at 1:30,powered by opinca, the dancers from Split
could have been engaged in similar movements.

It occurred to me that people might more easily be able to find videos of this kind of folk music if you started a thread in the European music section. There's already one there for Italian folk music, and it would be a welcome addition. Just a suggestion.

Similarities inevitably occur due to the ability of cultures to
easily expand,to influence one another, but in order to certify a
certain correlation, you have to add the facts that supports it.
Living isolated in the mountains, the Gorals had probably integrated
their original Vlach elements even into the Polish dances, developing
a style of their own, like the other North-Carpathian groups did.
This is the story of two shepherds that have met in an exposition
from Torino, the Pole, hearing that his companion is Romanian, said
to him that he is of Vlach origin too. They came up with a project,to
reconstruct the Vlach migration to Northern Carpathians.
The Polish hinghlanders couldn't retain their ancestral
way of living(shepherdry)without preserving other traditions too.
To summarize,I don't care if the Polish dance is just a Medieval
pan-European phenomenon, but I'm very interested of Goral print
in it,it has to be one, since they had ultimately preserved non-Polish/non-
Slovakian dances(hora, for instance,a traditional Romanian circle dance).

http://www.romania-insider.com/romanian-shepherd-walks-1300-km-with-herd-across-carpathians-in-trashumance-revival-project/106890/
It is very likely that these mountaineers had preserved(judging from people's faces)
not only traditions, but also genes for their agitated kingdom.
EDIT:
"Gorals have their distinctive music and the intricate quick step dance that is performed to this day."
http://www.shsnepa.org/Folktales%20and%20Legends/History%20Tales/Who%20are%20the%20Gorals.htm
EDIT2:
"Southern Poland features the culture of the Gorals (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorals) (Polish highlanders). These dances were brought to this mountain areas with Vlach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlach) settlers in the 17th century. Very similar versions can be found at the Gorols inSlovakia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovakia) and in Czech Republic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Republic). The rhythm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm) of their music is different for the otherwise duple or triple-meter of the lowlands."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_folk_dances
EDIT3:
"The dynamic of this custom raises the issue ofthe significance and importance of the creative act at the level of the reconstructionof male dance, which was put into circulation by the nowadays Goral tradition or ancientVlach basic motifs, slightly modified, together with several Gorals from Polandand the Vlachs folkloric groups from Slovakia and Czech Republic in a well know annualfestival named Troje Meze that starts in the last week of June or in the first weekof July"
"During 1970-1999 we observed a general scientific and cultural interest that doubledby financial efforts concerning collecting and publishing Polish Mountaineersfolklore, because they had published almost 73 traditional musical albums by Górals
within the Podhale, Beskids and Silesia counties, and between these albums we havefound 16 albums of traditional choreology. We want to underline the several projects made by the Institute of Archaeologyand Ethnology from Kraków and of course all the seminars dedicated to Carpathianethnology, because scientific interest is still actual in the Academic Polish milieu. In all of these studies published in the last few years in Poland we have discoveredclues, scientific documents, opinions that lead us to a shyness but proper acceptanceof historic realities that obviously show the presence and ethno-cultural contributionsof Vlach shepherds to the completion of the Central European cultural spirit of ourCarpathian neighbours"

necessarily imply Hellenization,it probably is an
umbrella term called this way because Dyonisos
antedates and influences Roman gods(like

"If I Die Young"-The Band Perry
"If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in a river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh, uh oh
Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh,
And life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I've had just enough time
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I've had just enough time
And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I've never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holdin' my hand,
There's a boy here in town, says he'll love me forever,
Who would have thought forever could be severed by...
...the sharp knife of a short life, oh well?
I've had just enough time
So put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls
What I never did is done
A penny for my thoughts, oh, no, I'll sell 'em for a dollar
They're worth so much more after I'm a goner
And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'
Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song
Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocket
Save 'em for a time when you're really gonna need 'em, oh
The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I've had just enough time
So put on your best, boys, and I'll wear my pearls."

I thought it was appropriate given they're burying so many young people, even little children, after the attacks in Nice.

This atrocity is hitting me particularly hard because I go there so often. I love southern France; it's sort of my second European home after Italy. Stupid, I know, but when I saw pictures of that truck parked on the Promenade des Anglais near the Negresco, I got literally nauseous. I had been seriously considering going to Europe early this year, and perhaps being in France for Bastille Day. I lived through 9/11, and lost people I cared about, and now I feel as if I almost lived through this.
I mean look at this:

Also, I listen to a lot of American country. I always liked it, but I like it more as I get older. At least some of them have good lyrics, unlike most of rap or heavy metal, most of which I hate.

Paper Scissor Stone - Portico Quartet
Great piece of music, from this talented London based group.
Yes, as I've admitted, I listen to the "Oldies" station when I'm in the car. Here's one of the best: "That Old Time Rock and Roll"-Bob Seger.
I think of it as great, windows open, cruising in the car kind of music, although it's great at summer pool and beach parties too, and summer concerts.
Here is the original version, and then there's a link to Jersey Boy Jon Bon Jovi and Kid Rock...so fun. :) He's like, what, 50, here? He's definitely still got it. :)

Actually it was not my first choice at that time(garbarek) but i possibly motivated from the previous posts about France's iterrible incident. Allthough from the video I really touched with the young tearing soldier, (about at ~2:50)

Vasco Rossi: Tango della Gelosia
It's what I feel inside, like a sickness that I don't even understand. But tell me a lie, what does it matter, as long as you're mine. The rest, it's folly, a fantasy, my fault and basta. Just don't go away from me; stay close to me. Even with your glances stay close to me when you sit beside me. (Or perhaps it could even be translated, don't even let your eyes stray from me...So there you go.) Why? Because of jealousy, nothing more, nothing else. It's not my fault. It's because you're mine and no one else's.

I read the comments to the dating an Italian woman video. Honestly, if more people had a sense of humor there'd be a lot less conflict in the world. It was supposed to be funny...ergo...exaggeration...my God, does the internet attract autistic people or something?

As to people who don't understand physical jealousy...what, do you people mate with spores, like plants?
Another sane one: esigente e fastidioso...applies to both men and women.
I needed to amuse myself a bit. Between politics, terrorism, and some posts on here, I was getting a little depressed.

You will feel like you just woke up from a weird dream after watching the previous vid. You'll ask..what just happened?
@Angela
You seem to like my music based on what you said in the cargo pants thread lol (kidding).
It takes a certain kind to enjoy work with a more psychadelic flavor such as the vid I posted last Thursday. Just this morning I awoke from a dream where a vigilante was riding a bicycle trying to catch a criminal with a gun attached to a fishing rod! The fishing rod was about 500 feet long and he kept getting it caught against buildings and cars.
Those dreams are actually pretty normal compared to most of the others I've had such as watching some guy in a music video singing about his disease as his face deforms while some of it melts off or the multiple bouts of sleep paralysis I had one night, some of which involved screaming disembodied voices shouting loudly in my ears, a faceless baby, me attempting to scream in terror at the top of my lungs but not being able to etc. I could write a book, but I don't want to stray too far from the topic of this thread.
I'm no stranger to sleep paralysis and throughout most episodes, I would hear "spirits" screaming in my ears.

"This next song was sung by Billie Holiday, called Gloomy Sunday. When she first recorded it on the radio there was a protest from the record company because it was too pessimistic and depressing. Therefore, they had her change the ending to make it more optimistic and hopeful. And at that moment was born the first pop music. I don't do it that way, of course."

What a lady. Is she looking like Nefertite?
I like the song and the visuals.
It sounds like a meanad, allthough she is from San Diego, I have the intense taste of south italy with her vibrato tremolo voices. I think she place the song in an other level
An amazing "love you forever" at exactly 03:59.
I don't know about you, but I can't understand her very well, nor Billie Holiday, for that matter, so for anyone else who has that trouble, see the lyrics below.
Also, this is the link to the Billie Holiday version, for comparison.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUCyjDOlnPU
Did you know it was originally a Hungarian song? That makes more sense to me.
"
"Gloomy Sunday"
Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will
never awaken you
Not where the black coach
of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of
ever returning you
Would they be angry
if I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday.
Gloomy is sunday
with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have
decided to end it all
Soon there'll be candles
and prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
let then know
that I'm glad to go
Death is no dream,
for in death I'm caressing you
With the last breath of my
soul I'll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
asleep in the deep of
my heart
dear
Darling I hope that my dream
never haunted you
My heart is telling you
how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday."

Yeah when MTV was about music and not about morons. I think mtv should change its name to "Stupid People".
The best thing about MTV is beavis and butthead. When my dad caught me watching it when I was 8, he took me outside and smacked the hell out of me. Here's a video of them watching slayer. Bird On A Wire:
This is the original Leonard Cohen performance of his own song. It's wonderful...a song by a grown up for grown ups. I've also provided a link to the cover by Johnny Cash, which is, imo, equally good in its own way. Johnny's diction is better, or the video is better, so all the words come through clearly, important for all Leonard Cohen "songs", as they're essentially poetry put to music.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gdXNSoYa4S8MTV was an interesting concept / idea. It is just too bad that corporation, fame and greed had to destroy such a great idea and a new frontier for the Western word and entertainment. Hope you all enjoyed this original first video (vintage) of Video Killed the Radio Star. It is a privilege. (You may not be able to find it anywhere, unfortunately.)
BTW, this was given to me personally, as a present, by original MTV Video-jockey Mark Goodman on VHS. (had to transfer and burn to DVD and then CD-ROM.) He no longer works at Viacom I don't believe, but he persuaded UMG (Universal Music Group.) to grant me privileges to the copyright.

Here is the first day of MTV, live. Unfortunately, you will not find "Video Killed the Radio Star" on it (it's cut for some odd) but you should see Mark there in the beginning. He was the main host VJ from 1981-1987. ) I just had to post this video on there, because it was a must.
(edit, nevermind, I just found a video with Video Killed the Radio Star. Someone posted it 19 days ago on the 31st of July, cool. I hope Viacom gave them the OK to post it. It would be sad if YouTube pulls it again.)

I appreciate the post, Yetos. These kinds of tragedies spare no one, right? They teach people how much alike they really are...
I couldn't understand the lyrics, but I could hear the pain in his voice.
I very much like songs the best which capture universal human feelings, with no artificial divisions between rich or poor, or ethnicities...
This is also a song about working men and the difficulties they face...the seamen of Liguria. It's called Creuza de Ma, or sea lanes, and it's sung in Genovese dialect by Fabrizio De Andre, one of our greatest singer song-writers. If you don't see the English subtitles on screen, click on cc.

well the previous song is difficult for me to transalet,
it has also Turkish and Persian words,
but the bellow its ok
only as every translation by a non expert will lose a lot,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-Re9SUebgE
it is a man's song, a man that feels the responsibilities of his life,
the lyrics in Greek are at the publications info
in English as I can translate
All my life is a responsibility
that 'takes' all, and gives nothing
All my life is a furnace(kiln)
that I have fall in, and braise me,
All my life is a foolishness
that is my only fortune (belongings-substance)
All my life is a sacrifice
having no purpose, neither meaning
All my life is a cigarette
that I do not like, yet I smoke it
and when comes to butt, a treat to Charos (libation to deat's ferryman)
for when the time come, and happen accidently to meet him (ferryman has been payed by my life's butt)
an alternative translation
My whole life is a responsibility
it takes everything from me, it gives nothing,
my whole life is furnace
in which I have fallen and which slowly roasts me.
My whole life is a nonsense
and my only property
my whole life is a sacrifice
which has nor goal, nor meaning
My whole life is a cigarette,
which I don't fancy, yet I smoke it
when the cigarette butt become a treat to death,
when the time is up, I bum him off (for a cigarette).
the performer

the song writer
https://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%86%CE%BA%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%A0%CE%AC%CE%BD%CE%BF% CF%85
both are if not the best, surely among the topten ever since modern Greece exist, beloved by common people artists
kazantzidis was married for a short time with the top 'lady' and Diva of Greek female performers, (few knows what happened to Australia)
the one that was like teacher to many girls at 60's till 80's,
Marinella, some probably know her by singing Grecani songs from S Italy,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1TMtncsdm0
infos about her
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marinella
the best perfomance that even today no Greek female singer dares to sing, cause it is consider not only impossible but also unholly
is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BtCDF4avpw
lyrics are here,
http://lyricstranslate.com/el/anikse-petra-%CE%AC%CE%BD%CE%BF%CE%B9%CE%BE%CE%B5-%CF%80%CE%AD%CF%84%CF%81%CE%B1-open-stone.html
Marinella always use to sing about the pain of a women, and to be a 'lady', a perfect morale female,
even today Marinella's song are loved by women, as the woman who stand and fight with the correct female way.
Although many criticise her as too excessive.
the most poor song for her abilities, as also outside her style and philosophy
was the 1974 Eurovision contest,
Marinella was the first Greek performer ever in Eurovision contest
'a bit of wine, a bit of sea, and my boyfriend'

Actually, perhaps the Greek singer is closer to Mia Martini? I like, and have posted Minuetto, but this one, "Gli Uomini non Cambiano" or Men Don't Change, is perhaps her "rawest" song. Well, that and "Cumme".

from modern Greek music artist I like noone,
all of them are industry made, and suddenly they are 'excaveted' at show like talent or voice,

anyway rap and new kinds of music, just change our aisthetics,
modern products of music, at least in Greece, are empty, without soul,
just hits, beats, and again and again,
great performs of old music, still impress me more, but not the new beat-hit like style,
especially thessaloniki and Makedonia which until 90's had her own scene and was ahead in Rock and new wave style in Greece today seems like not to exist,
we hear more old songs at cafes and sing them at tavernas, the only new is from abroad, the hits/beats from USA and glamour style.
last decades in greece, we are facing depreciation,
and that reflect to music, which today is either stupid lyrics, either ironic sarcastic lyrics,
anyway I think I will start a thread about Greek music through centuries,
starting from Seikilos and Mesomedes or orfeus.

2 less known istrument that comes from antique
1. Κανων/κανονακι Qanun Canun
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/s_uX8lijB-c/hqdefault.jpg
Κανονακι comes is evolution of Pythagoras monochordon,
the father of Qanun and Santour is considered Pythagoras,
kanon has 79 points/places and kanonaki (small) has less
modern long tail and Piano are based in the form of kanon and santouri more than in the piano of Cristofori of Padua
Kanon today is very famous at West Turkey and Arab countries,
Kanon was one of the most favourite instruments in Brygia and Smyrna before 1922
only from the sound and play you can realize its dynamic and relativity
the difference is that is played as a string organ with fingers than with mechanic hits as piano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3gfRe9Lzjo
and a video in Turkish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb7wIep6xLg
Both Kanon and Santour are evolution of ψαλτηριον which is evolution of epigonion of Pythagoras
2. Santour Santuri
Santour is the evolution of Kanon by Iranians and is developed at Persia with 100 points, while the older Greek form has 75,
its homeland is considered Persia.
Santour means 100 chordes in Iranian, but strangely the inner terms kept their mathematic etymology of Kanon (pythagoreian terms) like 'Kharak' and 'Poshte kharak' (Χαραξ, οπισθεν χαραξ)
Santour is very popular at Iranic world, and is played from Greece to India to China.
it is like piano of the West in some areas.
at the video is Makedonian rythm of Makelaris dance which passed to Con/polis Tatavla (kurtulus) as hasapiko and today is known as 'Syrtaki'
the atmospheric sounds of Byzantine empire on a Makedonian war dance via an old instrument that was evoluted by Persians.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMTTvAIR-ts
Santour was almost extinguist at Greece at 1950's-60's when Greece turn to western instruments,
but survived thanks to a great teacher A Moschos/Moshos
Aristeides Moschos was also considered as an elite santour player world wide,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRBVBrVCABs
PS
lately some deny that the etymology Santour is Iranian origin,
and consider it as Latin,
both Kanon and Santour comes from ψαλτεριον the east monastic organ/instrument (compare the pipe organ of the West)
ψαλτηριον (psalterion) in Latin/Italian would be something like Cantor Chantor
a ψαλτηριον was not allowed at Liturgy
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/38/Salterio.jpg/150px-Salterio.jpg
@Yetos maybe it would be nice for a proper thread for greek music. There many genres of it and someone could find something interesting.

Why "The Boss" is at a big Clinton rally in Philadelphia I have no idea...much less Jon Bon Jovi, but hey I've always liked him. (Given the voters they're trying to get out I think they should have brought JayZee back, although given his filth misogynistic songs and the fact they're running ads about Trump's filthy misogyny, perhaps they belatedly realized that was a risky move.)

Yeah the hyrule castle theme! This is the theme that plays when Ganon's knights take over Hyrule Castle and you as the Hero must lead the Princess to safety! This means a lot to me bc a) you got to rescue a princess and b) lead her out of the dungeon and protect her! As a male this was an awesome experience! We males love the "feeling" of being responsible for the safety of women and I would've loved the opportunity to risk death for a princess and have her weep for me in case I succumb to a mortal stab wound!
Nella Fantasia. Music by Ennio Morricone, Lyrics Chiara Ferraù Sung by Sarah Brightman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Sy90G7ceYU
Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto,
Lì tutti vivono in pace e in onestà.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano,
Pien' d'umanità in fondo all'anima.
In my fantasy I see a just world
Where all live in peace and honesty
I dream of souls that are always free
Like clouds that soar
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.
Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo chiaro
Lì anche la notte è meno oscura.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano.
Pien' d'umanità.
In my fantasy I see a bright world
Where even night there is less darkness
I dream of souls that are always free
Like clouds that soar
Full of humanity.
Nella fantasia esiste un vento caldo,
Che soffia sulle città, come amico.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano,
Pien' d'umanità in fondo all'anima.
In my fantasy exists a warming wind
That breathes into the city, like a friend
I dream of souls that are always free
Like clouds that soar
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.
well
it is very freezy in Europe last days,
in my town reach -11 C and in the village -17 C.
and water pipes are broken, so no water
so I remember something to warm spirit and mind

No, I don't speak any Gaelic - the Ontario educational system managed to wipe it out in past generations. It's still spoken in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia, which is where the Rankins are from. Most of the songs they recorded are in English, in order to reach a wider audience. But I like listening to the language of my ancestors, even though I don't understand it. Other artists from Cape Briton who've recorded in both English and Gaelic are Mary Jane Lamont and Wendy MacIssacs.
Ooh! My grandmammy is a Rankin.
Last listened to Burzum's album Fallen, I enjoyed it a lot! This week I've been playing lots of Wolfsheim though.

This song reminds me of the Syrian mothers who are trying to protect their children from death and destruction brought upon by warfare and terrorism. Especial these lyrics:
"War has come, bringing death,
lust and pain SOILING OUR HOME.
MOURNS AND CRIES kindle hate,
taint our hearts, corrupt our souls."
My interpretation of "mourns and cries" is a Syrian mother mourning her children after they've been killed by senseless warfare. It's so sad .

Lady Gaga's half time show at the NFL football match. It took me a long time to warm up to her, but the conversion process started with her singing duets with Tony Bennett, and now this seals the deal...
She wrote these songs (other than the patriotic ones), choreographed the dances, produced and directed the whole show, and then performed the whole thing live, no lip synching, and only when she sat down to play the piano after dancing did she sound out of breath.. She has an amazing voice, and it was an amazing production. I now believe that she indeed has a Mensa level IQ and was always in classes for the gifted.

Birdy - Fire Within. "Wings" is one of my favorite tracks!
It is an old song about 40 years
it is Ρωμιοσυνη, Ρωμανια ανδ Ρωμυλια
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLh9IxuW00M
here the birds are silent (do not sing)
even the bells are silent
and the sad (bitter acrimonius) Romios is in silence
together with his dead people
and upon the stone of silence
he is sharpening his nails
alone and with no help
dedicated to Freedom
Do not cry for Romiosyne
cause there when she is about to kneel
with the knife reaching the bone
and the ruff-neckband on the shoulders
there she springs from the begin
and stands on feet (becomes man) and grows
and she harpoons the Therion (monster)
with the harpoon of the Sun
as for the Romios choose, but it is the same

Since it is Easter here in Greece,

At Makedonia we love the old organs, like Askavlos-gaida, Zourna, etc
the connection with Austrohungarian empire imported the bronze musical instruments last 2 centuries,

This song means a lot to me personally. The way it captures the emotions that I've felt is uncanny...here's the lyrics in case you can't bother with the metal
Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this Can t be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he 's gone
No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now, I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
"Yesterday seems though it never existed"..now THATS realistic! Some of the best lyrics of this song period!
