I'm honoring the memory of the great Russian baritone, Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962-2017), deceased a few days ago and one of my favorite Opera singers. So these last days I've been listening to several of his best recordings, especially the live ones which show his talent on the stage. I've posted excerpts of some good live recordings of him in my YouTube musical channel. ;-)

I just noticed the guy on the right was holding a joint. So I changed the video to one with a different image. I don't want to promote that kind of thing.
Yea, they're a really great. All black punk band, that most likely influenced the Bad Brains. Punk bands from the 70s were more musically talented, than the ones in the 80s IMO. They had a greater depth of emotion, than just anger and aggression.

He relates stories about the inexorable and destructive power of time, mankinds futile attempts of resistance, and the sunken cities, fallen towers, and overgrown ruins that this has resulted in. Dark eerie soundscapes and ritualistic drums are combined with his own field recordings from places like Cairo, Iceland, and gloomy Nordic forests.

One of my all time favorite songs. The only thing is that the actors are so stunningly gorgeous it's hard for me to concentrate on the music and lyrics. :) I wouldn't have thought Bianca Balti was a good choice for this, but she makes it work.

Now there's an odd one for a Saudi to like. I've read quite a bit about them, and the Knights of Malta as well. Fascinating stuff.
The Knights of Malta still exist although their mission is now humanitarian work carried out in 100 countries. I went to an investiture about ten years ago. It was very solemn and like a step back into time, all black, red lined cloaks with a white cross and solemn chanting.
The cloaks are just as shown in the pictures of their ancient garb in the following video; they just go down to the floor now, since they're not going to battle in them, and they're lined in red satin.

I love everything they ever did, but "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" may be my favorite. The studio version is polished and perfect, and very few people could harmonize together like these two, but for emotional punch, Art Garfunkel singing this live in New York City can't be beat in my opinion: heartfelt, and no ear piece, no audio tune, just pure singing ability. That concert has to be one of the best live, outdoor performances of all time.

He just got a bigger house. :)

You're right: from that delicious harmonizing doo-wop on "The Longest Time", to country, to "The Stranger", another one of my favorites.
That's what I love about these New York/New Jersey guys-Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen-not only good music, but great lyrics that give you something to think about, that you memorize and sing along with them.
The Stranger
Well, we all have a face
That we hide away forever
And we take them out
And show ourselves when everyone has gone
Some are satin, some are steel
Some are silk and some are leather
They're the faces of a stranger
But we'd love to try them on
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover
See the stranger in yourself
Don't be afraid to try again
Everyone goes south every now and then
You've done it
Why can't someone else
You should know by now
You've been there yourself
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong
Though you drown in good intentions
You will never quench the fire
You'll give in to your desire
When the stranger comes along
Poor Billy, he wasn't lucky in love...
It doesn't get any better than Billy, his piano, and Tony Bennet singing "A New York State of Mind" at Shea Stadium.

That's what I love about these New York/New Jersey guys-Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen-not only good music, but great lyrics that give you something to think about, that you memorize and sing along with them.

Andreas Scholl, counter-tenor, singing Handel's Ombra Mai Fu. This is my favorite period for music. Whenever I feel out of sorts mentally or emotionally, I turn to this kind of music. It soothes my soul.
I hate to admit it but now that I'm more familiar with the counter-tenors I prefer them to sopranos for this music. Could Farinelli and the other castrati have sounded more like angels than this man? It's hard to believe.

Thinking of our other thread on music and the replaying of it, I've probably listened to my favorite classical pieces thousands of times over my lifetime. Not just this one, either.
I probably listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D every other week, and when people drop in who know music, they sometimes accuse me of playing nothing but Vivaldi.

I have really tried, but the most I can do is to enjoy the voice of a countertenor, though still getting that thinking "oh this note would've been sung with such better vocal dynamics and effortlessness by a soprano or mezzo-soprano!" It's unavoidable, many times I am loving an entire performance until some higher note or higher fioritura is necessary in the score, and that thought "Oh if he were just a soprano!" comes to my mind again. LOL! I love some countertenors, mainly Andreas Scholl (what a divine "Ombra mai fu" you posted there!), Franco Fagioli and Emmanuel Cencic... but still I miss that fuller and more "colorful" core of the sound of a good mezzo or contralto. As wonderful as a countertenor is, the top notes are never as free and ringing as that of a soprano or mezzo, it's almost impossible, and the lowest tones are seldom as vibrant and effortless as that of a good contralto (but then what can we do when true contraltos have almost vanished these days?). Tallking about contraltos and their imminent disappearance, I was so happy to find this young girl singing AMAZINGLY in a true and seamless lyric contralto voice. This kind of voice, when assisted by an excellent technique, transports me to another realm.

Very nice. I too like a good contralto voice. Unfortunately, a lot of classical music singers I know don't want to be contraltos. They insist on pushing into the higher registers with very mixed results. They tend to get very insulted when you praise them fervently when they singer in lower keys, as if you're saying they're not very good sopranos. The truth is, they aren't, and people are trying to prod them to sing in their more "natural" voice.
I'm not like that; even just singing in choirs as I do, I've realized I can't comfortably sing soprano most of the time. I blame it not on the passing of the years, but to having to yell at my children!
Do you think you would have liked the voice of the castrati for whom a lot of this music was written?

No, these are just renditions. The creator of the song is unkown because it is a roma folk song. Goran, Nele, and all the other performers are
popularizers not creators..
The original creator of the song is some roma guy that never got credit. The song exists since before Nele Karajlic was born.

It is a very good song and I have heard it live many times.
But you first said it was created by goran bregovic, now your saying its credited to Nele. They are renditions/arrangments, not compositions.
They are very good performances, but the credit for the composition of the actual song goes to the roma people, since it's their folk song.
I think the roma should get their credit, and not have their song be presented as being a serbian song (gorans rendition is a really good one in
time of the gypsies, which is also a great movie).
Here is one rendition of it by the american band Beirut:

"Music by" probably means "arrangement by"
"In music (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music), an arrangement is a musical reconceptualization of a previously composed work.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrangement#cite_note-RCJE-1) It may differ from the original work by means of reharmonization, melodic paraphrasing, orchestration, or development of the formal structure."
