Sulic is from Slovenia and Hauser from Croatia, they performed in the Malta arts festival last July - they are simply amazing. Listen to the first tune in this concert (I think in Belgrade). It must be familiar.

However, I have been informed that the posters on Eurogenes have determined, based on the latest scientific methods, that certain "Caucasus" ladies, who were either dragged off by their hair or were Amazons who forcibly had their way with the poor steppe men bore more than a passing resemblance to Kim Kardashian! Just picture the Bronze Age warrior and Kim Kardashian...YIKES!

As per the music, I figured you'd get the joke even if nobody else did. But as for Kim Kardashian versus Bronze Age Warriors as imagined by Eurogenes and friends, that is a scary prospect. And if it did come down to a battle, my money is on Kim Kardashian. She's one of those quintessentially American figures whose only redeeming qualities are boundless courage and optimism, but those are not qualities to underestimate. I certainly wouldn't want to meet her in a dark tent on the steppes, but I suppose some of the lads who hang around the Eurogenes Blog like to imagine they could keep up with her (they couldn't).

I agree Davidski has an exaggerated Conan-Barbarian view of ancient steppe people, but there is evidence for what they say.

If lets say close to 100% of steppe Y DNA was R1a and R1b(which is what ancient DNA suggests) and EHG-derived, where did their ENF ancestry come from? In western Europe we get the same picture that WHG-EEF admixture was if anything mostly WHG male and EEF female, which can explain the high amount of I and C-V20 in Neolithic farmers. If WHG-type people lived in Greece and gave EEF over 30% WHG(if they came out of west Asia 100% ENF) I guess that could also be an explanation.

Modern European mtDNA is overwhelmingly west Asian, yet autosomally they aren't.

Maybe WHG-ANE women were bigger, more masculine-looking, and ugly, so hunter men preferred ENF-heavy females. This is not impossible, we see similar trends today.

The Venetian Carnevale is a very different "kettle of fish" from the Brasilian variety...not at all a Bacchanalia, although I'm sure that the masks in the past allowed for a certain amount of, shall we say, discrete misbehavior.

This is the Venice Carnival...an opportunity to show off one's artistry, craftsmanship, elegance and ability to create beauty. The music is provided by Rondo Veneziano, a group of mostly female musicians who play Baroque style music on original instruments, but with "rock" elements. I like their work very much. That's not to say that there won't be gondoliers singing O Sole Mio, but that's because that's what the tourists request.

True, im surprised how many countries actually celebrate Carnival also in Panaji India and Indonesia.

The Venitian Carnival is quite distinctive and maybe somber at times, but the costumes fit in so well with the ambiance and creates a wonderful experience.

We also have a much smaller Carnevale in Viareggio in Toscana, which is different yet again...more an opportunity to provide fun for children and at the same time to lampoon political and other easily ridiculed people!

Yes, it's very beautiful, but definitely restrained. As a city Venice has been seen by certain authors as having a certain "sadness" to it, but given enough cold and rain, any city can seem "sad", not to mention the deterioration that has taken place over the centuries. That's not how I think of it, though. Like a lot of other Italian cities it spells "romance" to me. This is my favorite song about Venice. My parents used to dance so beautifully to it.

I suppose I meant less well known than Venice or Brazil and so fewer tourists rather than "smaller". It's actually quite large...people spend all year preparing the floats. Yes, it's similar to those for which you provided a link. All of them are a far cry from Brazil or Mardi Gras in New Orleans, which as I've posted a couple of times before I absolutely loathed

Thank you for the links, very interesting, enjoyed that haha. I have read a little about the ancient Carnival which some of it can also be attributed to pre Chirstian era in some instances. Ancient carnival was more of full participation from the people without having much audience to watch a particular spectacle. Different regions develop their own themes. Though I agree with you with the general folly and shock effect. We have a different and spontaneous Carnival which is prefered with the younger generations on the Island of Gozo that probably is more authentic in style compared to the floats and parades to the Valletta one.
