The Canadian Rap isn't coming up for me. I do have a bit of a liking for some Rap, despite all the cursing. Maybe it's because I've been a captive audience in the car! LOL Some of Eminem is god. I used to hear a lot of LL Kool J too. At least he didn't talk about beating up women and doing drugs; it was all about his prowess with the ladies.

No, I don't speak any Gaelic - the Ontario educational system managed to wipe it out in past generations. It's still spoken in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia, which is where the Rankins are from. Most of the songs they recorded are in English, in order to reach a wider audience. But I like listening to the language of my ancestors, even though I don't understand it. Other artists from Cape Briton who've recorded in both English and Gaelic are Mary Jane Lamont and Wendy MacIssacs.

I think I've fixed the glitch in the Canadian rap music url. If you still can't open it, just go to Youtube and do a search for a song called "Out For A Rip". You may not like the language, but you have to see the video if you've never watched people dancing with chainsaws before. Of course, you'd probably have to live in rural Ontario or some similar place in order to understand the iconic role of chainsaws in the lives of people who still partly depend on wood stoves for heat in a cold climate.

It did open up. I never saw anyone dance with a chainsaw before, but I've certainly seen a lot of men using them, yes. :) Rural New England doesn't look all that different from rural Ontario.
My father and uncles bought a lot of wooded ex-farmland when they retired. I think they were trying to get back in touch with their Apennines roots. :)That in combination with the legendary frugality of that region in Italy meant they all put in those furnaces that use both wood and oil. I can't tell you how much time they spent cutting down trees and stocking firewood. Lots of hunting too, until my mom put a stop to it on family owned land. She and I put out a salt lick for the does and fawns. :)

I went through a short phase of listening to Gregorian chants for relaxation purposes, absolutely magical, more and more in the setting you are describing. On the other hand as much as i can listen to electro pop I simply cannot listen to the group Gregorian, although talented and very popular, it kind of spoils the charm from the original Gregorian style. :unsure:

Linda Ronstadt-I think her music is timeless. (The hairstyles of the men in this video are a different story! :)) She had such a wonderful voice, and could sing anything, and did. She has a Nelson Riddle CD, a Mexican Mariachi type CD, has sung some Gilbert and Sullivan, and has done numerous covers of country classics.

So the Junior Eurovision is brought to Malta for the first time thanks to Gaia Cauchi who won the festival with 'The start' last year. So, like the lady in the video, I either start thinking about everybody and everything that has ****** me off lately, or I start making lists of everything I have to do, or I start worrying about my children, or I start gnawing at some intellectual problem like the dratted Indo-Europeans or something. :grin: Not what you're supposed to be doing...and the more they tell me to relax the madder I get!

Yes, that one seems to strike a chord with a lot of people. It's a clip from a Canadian comedy show called "This Hour Has 22 Minutes". If you look for "22 Minutes" on Youtube, there's lots of their stuff there. Not all of it makes me laugh, but some of it is really funny.

I'm not normally a fan of young kids singing adult tunes with adult mannerisms, but you're right, he's an amazing performer for someone his age, and he does have a Mia Martini sort of vibe...he's even the same type physically.

Vespri Siciliani-a Verdi opera which could be subtitled, “Beware of ****ing Off Sicilians." I listened to it last night (it's available on youtube). What can I say...I love Verdi...plus, an obsession with Sicilians is an internet disease which I seem lately to have caught. I thought I was safe here, a sort of refuge zone, but apparently not.:grin: Not that I bear any animus against them, I hasten to add, rather the opposite, as I married one of their cousins (well, part cousin) from across the Strait of Messina. :smile:
I think this opera would have been a better choice as a backdrop to The Godfather III than Cavaliere Rusticana. (I would be even more leery of antagonizing anyone in this subgroup! They have very long memories. The only people who have a bit of immunity are honest prosecutors and FBI people. After all, even they don’t have a death wish, and slaughtering “clean” law enforcement people would bring down the whirlwind.)
The opera celebrates the revolt of the Sicilians against French rule in 1282, which began at Vespers or sunset prayer time on the night before Easter Monday. There are a number of versions of how it started but all of them involve the insolence of dastardly Frenchmen toward Sicilian women. (Messing with their women is also not a good idea, even today, and trust me on this, the Calabresi aren’t much better. :petrified:)

A sergeant named Drouet dragged a young married woman from the crowd, pestering her with his advances. Her husband then attacked Drouet with a knife, killing him. I have a few Gaspard's in my family somewhere.
I thought nobody would like this music; but I showed this song to several people and they were fascinated by it. It is gloomy and mysterious. Very little is known about this musician. His name was Alcide Gaspard and was blind. He died very young; about 8 years after this song was recorded.

This season there were twelve scheduled performances of Handel's Messiah in New York, and that's not counting the performances in the suburbs in the surrounding tri-state area. The performances of the New York Philharmonic and the Oratorio Society are probably the most highly regarded. I personally don't think it's ever been done better than when Leonard Bernstein conducted it. I've provided a link to the "Chorus" below. Quincy Jones did a "soul" arrangement which is very nice. That link is listed as well. Speaking of fun versions, there is a great one done by the Boston Gay Men's choir that uses visual aids for the lyrics, mainly, I think, so that the vocally challenged could participate. :) There are always some complaints because it does distract from the wonderful singing that is a hallmark of this group, but you have to have fun with the classics too! Anyway, another fun thing to do if you're in New York around this time of year, and you're a frustrated performer like some of us (ahem!) is to participate in one of the Messiah Sing Ins, of which there are dozens. The best, in my humble opinion, is the one put on by the National Chorale, when we are 3,000 strong.

Jussi Bjorling "Bella figlia dell'amore" from Verdi's Rigoletto. (It was featured in the English movie "Quartet" which I just watched last night, and which is about retired singers and musicians putting on a Verdi Gala. It has a great cast, by the way, including Maggie Smith and also some bona fide elderly opera singers. Anyway, this Jussi Bjorling version is one of my favorites. It's just stupendously beautiful. Ironic but true that this Swede was one of the greatest "Italianate" tenors ever to grace the stage. He's at his best here...the tone...the phrasing...my god, the breath control...he seems to have superhuman lung capacity. When I hear untrained singers drawing these rasping breaths all over the place I want to throw a slipper or something!

I surely do Angela. That is a very nice piece of Music thanks. I go through phases with Lute, pipe organ (love the dramatic sound), violin and guitar. Strangely enough I am not too keen on piano and I can take some doses of Saxophone (as in soft Jazz).

I don`t know how I came to think Marianne Faithful did a version of this..:rolleyes2: The thing about M.Faithful, in my opinion, is that she didn`t`so much have a great voice but seemed to choose material that played with her voice perfectly, at least in later years. With that in mind, I agree she probably would have made a good version of W.R. Saying that, I think it would be hard to better Slicks own version..:)

I agree Davidski has an exaggerated Conan-Barbarian view of ancient steppe people, but there is evidence for what they say.
If lets say close to 100% of steppe Y DNA was R1a and R1b(which is what ancient DNA suggests) and EHG-derived, where did their ENF ancestry come from? In western Europe we get the same picture that WHG-EEF admixture was if anything mostly WHG male and EEF female, which can explain the high amount of I and C-V20 in Neolithic farmers. If WHG-type people lived in Greece and gave EEF over 30% WHG(if they came out of west Asia 100% ENF) I guess that could also be an explanation.
Modern European mtDNA is overwhelmingly west Asian, yet autosomally they aren't.
Maybe WHG-ANE women were bigger, more masculine-looking, and ugly, so hunter men preferred ENF-heavy females. This is not impossible, we see similar trends today.

If WHG-type people lived in Greece and gave EEF over 30% WHG(if they came out of west Asia 100% ENF) I guess that could also be an explanation.
Modern European mtDNA is overwhelmingly west Asian, yet autosomally they aren't.
Maybe WHG-ANE women were bigger, more masculine-looking, and ugly, so hunter men preferred ENF-heavy females. This is not impossible, we see similar trends today.

Yes, it's very beautiful, but definitely restrained. As a city Venice has been seen by certain authors as having a certain "sadness" to it, but given enough cold and rain, any city can seem "sad", not to mention the deterioration that has taken place over the centuries. That's not how I think of it, though. Like a lot of other Italian cities it spells "romance" to me. This is my favorite song about Venice. My parents used to dance so beautifully to it.

Thank you for the links, very interesting, enjoyed that haha. I have read a little about the ancient Carnival which some of it can also be attributed to pre Chirstian era in some instances. Ancient carnival was more of full participation from the people without having much audience to watch a particular spectacle. Different regions develop their own themes. Though I agree with you with the general folly and shock effect. We have a different and spontaneous Carnival which is prefered with the younger generations on the Island of Gozo that probably is more authentic in style compared to the floats and parades to the Valletta one.

Gloria Estefan, the first one, came on the scene as part of a group called the Miami Sound Machine that had a lot of hits in the 80's. The original members were all Cuban born Cuban Americans. I guess you could say their music was Latin American influenced. Their big hits were in English, but they also did some Spanish language songs. They were pretty popular at the time for party or dance music, but even then it would never have been played in a department store, at least not in the northeastern U.S.! South Florida is another world. I never heard the second woman until just recently, again in a store. She's apparently "big" right now in the Latin music world.

She most loved that she didn't have to wear those kerchiefs any more and could get her hair done at the hairdressers and could wear a pretty dress even in her eighties! (She did look lovely even in her eighties...a figure like a girl and her hair was barely grey.) You see where I get it? :laughing:

Country and American folk music is popular in Serbia. This is not due to Hollywood Western type films (although it is possible that they, among other things, in a period of time contributed to the popularization). Melodies and sounds this music, which has European and African roots, are what makes them so special and popular. Basically it is the music of the American South and the region of Appalachia. I think there are some similar cultural and other vibrations that make up that people prefer some music, no matter what they are in different parts of the world.

I like that too, but I could wish there were more of us still around who like "traditional" folk music.
Like this...in my part of Italy almost no one apart from the ninety year olds remembers the "old" music, or sings it regularly anyway. It's a little better in the south it seems to me.

I loved this song of Rod Stewart, I learned English memorizing its verses.
It is interesting Rod Stewart shares first place with Jean Michel Jarre for the largest concert on the world. They had 3,500,000 (!) visitors, Rod in Rio de Janeiro 1994., and Jarre in Moscow 1997.
One of good songs of Rod Stewart is Downtown Train, but I prefer same song performed by Patty Smith.
