She can sing anything, and has, blues/jazz, country, rock, and pop. She does them all superlatively well.

This is new to me Aberdeen. Very nice. Do you understand Gaelic?

The Canadian Rap isn't coming up for me. I do have a bit of a liking for some Rap, despite all the cursing. Maybe it's because I've been a captive audience in the car! LOL Some of Eminem is god. I used to hear a lot of LL Kool J too. At least he didn't talk about beating up women and doing drugs; it was all about his prowess with the ladies.

No, I don't speak any Gaelic - the Ontario educational system managed to wipe it out in past generations. It's still spoken in the Cape Breton area of Nova Scotia, which is where the Rankins are from. Most of the songs they recorded are in English, in order to reach a wider audience. But I like listening to the language of my ancestors, even though I don't understand it. Other artists from Cape Briton who've recorded in both English and Gaelic are Mary Jane Lamont and Wendy MacIssacs.

I think I've fixed the glitch in the Canadian rap music url. If you still can't open it, just go to Youtube and do a search for a song called "Out For A Rip". You may not like the language, but you have to see the video if you've never watched people dancing with chainsaws before. Of course, you'd probably have to live in rural Ontario or some similar place in order to understand the iconic role of chainsaws in the lives of people who still partly depend on wood stoves for heat in a cold climate.

It did open up. I never saw anyone dance with a chainsaw before, but I've certainly seen a lot of men using them, yes. :) Rural New England doesn't look all that different from rural Ontario.

My father and uncles bought a lot of wooded ex-farmland when they retired. I think they were trying to get back in touch with their Apennines roots. :)That in combination with the legendary frugality of that region in Italy meant they all put in those furnaces that use both wood and oil. I can't tell you how much time they spent cutting down trees and stocking firewood. Lots of hunting too, until my mom put a stop to it on family owned land. She and I put out a salt lick for the does and fawns. :)

Tsk, Tsk! Whenever I speak to someone who will be in Tuscany, I always recommend that they go listen to the monks at the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo. They're not the most accomplished, but the landscape and the Abbey, combined with the music, makes for a lovely experience...even for non-believers. At least, I've never gotten any complaints.

That said, the Monty Python clip is very funny. :) I love their stuff. I love John Cleese, in particular.

I went through a short phase of listening to Gregorian chants for relaxation purposes, absolutely magical, more and more in the setting you are describing. On the other hand as much as i can listen to electro pop I simply cannot listen to the group Gregorian, although talented and very popular, it kind of spoils the charm from the original Gregorian style.

Linda Ronstadt-I think her music is timeless. (The hairstyles of the men in this video are a different story! :)) She had such a wonderful voice, and could sing anything, and did. Later on I might listen to Feuilles Mortes as sung by Yves Montand (born Ivo Livi in Toscana):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo1C6E7jbPw

English translation:
Fallen leaves

Oh I would like you so much to remember
The joyful days when we were friends.
At that time, life was more beautiful
And the sun burned more than it does today.
Fallen leaves can be picked up by the shovelful.
You see, I have not forgotten...
Fallen leaves can be picked up by the shovelful,
So can memories and regrets.
And the north wind takes them
Into the cold night of oblivion.
You see, I have not forgotten
The song you used to sing me.
(chorus)
This song is like us.
You used to love me and I used to love you
And we used to live together,
You loving me, me loving you.
But life separates lovers,
Pretty slowly, noiselessly,
And the sea erases on the sand
The separated lovers' footprints.

To Autumn-John Keats
1. SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.
2.
Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.
3.
Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

I'm not normally a fan of young kids singing adult tunes with adult mannerisms, but you're right, he's an amazing performer for someone his age, and he does have a Mia Martini sort of vibe...he's even the same type physically.

I saw this on youtube a while ago and saved it. It's a Mia Martini medley from before she ruined her voice. Minuetto starts about 8:30.

I don't let go of things I love easily. I play them quite often, especially when I need soothing, and given the news, I needed soothing. There's a lot of wisdom as well as poetry in their songs, but people don't really listen. I also love Art's vocals...that sort of choir boy sound.

Anyway, I love Sarah MacLachan, and especially that song. I like Roger Daltry too, although I haven't played him for a long time.

Vespri Siciliani-a Verdi opera which could be subtitled, “Beware of ****ing Off Sicilians." I listened to it last night (it's available on youtube). What can I say...I love Verdi...plus, an obsession with Sicilians is an internet disease which I seem lately to have caught. I thought I was safe here, a sort of refuge zone, but apparently not. Not that I bear any animus against them, I hasten to add, rather the opposite, as I married one of their cousins (well, part cousin) from across the Strait of Messina.

I think this opera would have been a better choice as a backdrop to The Godfather III than Cavaliere Rusticana. (I would be even more leery of antagonizing anyone in this subgroup! They have very long memories. The only people who have a bit of immunity are honest prosecutors and FBI people. After all, even they don’t have a death wish, and slaughtering “clean” law enforcement people would bring down the whirlwind.)

The opera celebrates the revolt of the Sicilians against French rule in 1282, which began at Vespers or sunset prayer time on the night before Easter Monday. There are a number of versions of how it started but all of them involve the insolence of dastardly Frenchmen toward Sicilian women. (Messing with their women is also not a good idea, even today, and trust me on this, the Calabresi aren’t much better. :petrified:)

From Wiki:
“the Sicilians at the church were engaged in holiday festivities and a group of French officials came by to join in and began to drink. A sergeant named Drouet dragged a young married woman from the crowd, pestering her with his advances. Her husband then attacked Drouet with a knife, killing him. When the other Frenchmen tried to avenge their comrade, the Sicilian crowd fell upon them, killing them all. At that moment all the church bells in Palermo began to ring for Vespers.”

This is another version:
“In the version according to Leonardo Bruni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_Bruni) (1416), the Palermitans were holding a festival outside the city when the French came up to check for weapons, and on that pretext began to fondle the breasts of their women. This then began a riot, the French were attacked first with rocks, then weapons, killing them all. The news spread to other cities leading to revolt throughout Sicily. "By the time the furious anger at their insolence had drunk its fill of blood, the French had given up to the Sicilians not only their ill-gotten riches but their lives as well."

I've linked to three nice pieces to hopefully whet some appetite to hear more...if not of this opera, of Verdi in general.

Here is the overture, brilliantly conducted by Riccardo Muti. (I adore him and have done for decades. He’s a conductor of passion and style who seems to have channeled Verdi. A rock star of a conductor!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1iOk-i6fGE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1iOk-i6fGE)

“ O Patria…O Mu Palermo. “ For once, the tenor didin’t get all the glory. (Has anyone ever noticed the basses and baritones are usually better looking than the tenors? Would it have just been too much to give them good looks too? Or is it just me? Wait…there’s Placido Domingo…he was always easy on the eye, so maybe I take it back…And what about Franco Corelli? Ok just forget I said anything.) This is my favorite version of it. The singer is Ferruccio Furlanetto.

O patria, o cara patria, alfin ti veggo!
Oh fatherland, Oh dear fatherland, at last I see you!

L’esule ti saluta dopo sì lunga assenza.
The exile greets you after too long an absence.

Il fiorente tuo suolo ripien d’amore io bacio.
I kiss your flowering soil with kisses of love.

Reco il mio voto a te, col braccio e il core!
With my arms and my heart I'll keep my vow to you!

O tu, Palermo, terra adorata,
Oh Palermo, beloved land,

a me sì caro riso d’amor,
Laugh of love so dear to me,

alza la fronte tanto oltraggiata,
Raise youe outraged brow,

il tuo ripiglia primier splendor!
Reclaim your former splendor!

Chiesi aita a straniere nazioni,
I sought help from foreign nations,

ramingai per castella e città.
I wandered through castles and cities.

Ma, insensibil al fervido sprone,
But, insensible of my fervid urging,

dicea ciascun:
Every one of them said:

Siciliani, ov’è il prisco valor?
Sicilians, where is your former valor?

Su, sorgete a vittoria, all’onor!
Go on, rise up to victory, to honor!

You get the drift I’m sure….

One of the highlights of the New York Holiday Season is the annual production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite as choreographed by George Balanchine. It's a more than 55 year old unbroken tradition. The gold and glitter of the theater, the sumptuous stage set and costuming, the orchestra, the wonderful dancers, and the presence of so many awestruck and excited children in the audience combine to create a really magical and unforgettable experience.

For those who prefer just the music, this is a lovely performance by the Osaka Philharmonic:

This season there were twelve scheduled performances of Handel's Messiah in New York, and that's not counting the performances in the suburbs in the surrounding tri-state area. The performances of the New York Philharmonic and the Oratorio Society are probably the most highly regarded. I personally don't think it's ever been done better than when Leonard Bernstein conducted it. I've provided a link to the "Chorus" below. Quincy Jones did a "soul" arrangement which is very nice. That link is listed as well. Speaking of fun versions, there is a great one done by the Boston Gay Men's choir that uses visual aids for the lyrics, mainly, I think, so that the vocally challenged could participate. :) There are always some complaints because it does distract from the wonderful singing that is a hallmark of this group, but you have to have fun with the classics too! Anyway, another fun thing to do if you're in New York around this time of year, and you're a frustrated performer like some of us (ahem!) is to participate in one of the Messiah Sing Ins, of which there are dozens. The best, in my humble opinion, is the one put on by the National Chorale, when we are 3,000 strong.

I know that Leonard Cohen is not everybody's cup of tea, and it's certainly a totally different genre, but i was listening to him the other day, and so the following song came to mind when I listened to this waltz. This particular clip is from when he was older, and his voice had already started to go, but as with Johnny Cash, it's almost more moving to me for that very reason, and plus, I love the visuals in this particular clip.

Now, I'm a dyed in the wool romantic, and despite all the evidence to the contrary still a bit of an idealist when it comes to love, but I have to admit that when this song was playing I kept on thinking how it could double as a profile on some internet dating sites. What a playbook for an unscrupulous man. :laughing:Women generally just eat this stuff up, no matter how often they've been burned, in my experience. Great description of a chaconne, and a passacaglia for that matter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaconne
A chaconne (/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English)ʃ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ə (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ˈ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)k (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɒ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)n (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English); French: [ʃakɔn] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_French); Spanish: chacona; Italian: ciaccona, pronounced [tʃakˈkoːna] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_Italian)) is a type of musical composition popular in the baroque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque) era when it was much used as a vehicle for variation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variation_%28music%29) on a repeated short harmonic progression, often involving a fairly short repetitive bass-line (ground bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_bass)) which offered a compositional outline for variation, decoration, figuration and melodic invention. In this it closely resembles the passacaglia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passacaglia).

They were danced to, for obvious reasons...

After the Baroque it went into a bit of a decline as a music form, but a lot of twentieth and twenty first century composers have brought it back.

Two of my favorite chaconnes:

Jussi Bjorling "Bella figlia dell'amore" from Verdi's Rigoletto. (It was featured in the English movie "Quartet" which I just watched last night, and which is about retired singers and musicians putting on a Verdi Gala. It has a great cast, by the way, including Maggie Smith and also some bona fide elderly opera singers. It's a very sweet movie, but oh dear, how I dread the idea of getting that old...of course, the alternative isn't so great either!http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/laughing.gif)

Anyway, this Jussi Bjorling version is one of my favorites. It's just stupendously beautiful. Ironic but true that this Swede was one of the greatest "Italianate" tenors ever to grace the stage. He's at his best here...the tone...the phrasing...my god, the breath control...he seems to have superhuman lung capacity. When I hear untrained singers drawing these rasping breaths all over the place I want to throw a slipper or something!

Here are the lyrics for the section starting at 1:58. Does anything ever change? Ah, the perfidy of men! http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/grin.png

DUKE
Fairest daughter of love,
I am a slave to your charms;
with but a single word you could
relieve my every pain.
Come, touch my breast and feel
how my heart is racing.

MADDALENA
Ah! Ah! That really makes me laugh;
talk like that is cheap enough.
Believe me, I know exactly
what such play?acting is worth!
I, my fine sir, am quite accustomed
to foolish jokes like this.

GILDA
Ah, these are the loving words
the scoundrel spoke once to me!
O wretched heart betrayed
do not break for sorrow.

RIGOLETTO
to Gilda
Hush weeping can do no good...
You are now convinced he was lying.
Hush, and leave it up to me
to hasten our revenge.
It will be quick, it will be deadly,
I know how to deal with him.

Listen to me, go home.
Take some money and a horse,
Put on the men's clothes I provided,
then leave at once for Verona.
I shall meet you there tomorrow.

I'd say that if Jefferson Airplane are Paleolithic, Queen would be Mesolithic. So only somewhat old to me but ancient to Generation Y. And I'm too old to want to exercise to "We Will Rock You". But "Another One Bites The Dust" - there are times when I can relate to that one.

I surely do Angela. That is a very nice piece of Music thanks. I go through phases with Lute, pipe organ (love the dramatic sound), violin and guitar. Strangely enough I am not too keen on piano and I can take some doses of Saxophone (as in soft Jazz).

So many things going on at present I am very much in this mood (since we are in Queen mood). I think this song brings out the unique vocal abilities of Farouk Bulsara much better known as Freddie Mercury - The show must go on :).....one of my favorite too.

I don`t know how I came to think Marianne Faithful did a version of this..:rolleyes2: The thing about M.Faithful, in my opinion, is that she didn`t`so much have a great voice but seemed to choose material that played with her voice perfectly, at least in later years. With that in mind, I agree she probably would have made a good version of W.R. Saying that, I think it would be hard to better Slicks own version..:)

It was a really good movie, and the music in the movie was great, including this wonderful performance of the exquisitely beautiful Il Dolce Suono (The Sweet Sound) from Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor:

From Wiki:
Lucia descends into madness, and on her wedding night, while the festivities are still being held in the Great Hall, she stabs her new husband, Arturo, in the bridal chamber. Disheveled, unaware of what she has done, she wanders in the Great Hall, recalling her meetings with Edgardo and imagining herself married to him.
Donizetti intended the aria to be accompanied by the eerie sound of the glass harmonica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_harmonica), though this instrument is often replaced in performance by a flute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flute).
An arrangement of the aria was featured in the film The Fifth Element (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fifth_Element), sung by the alien character Diva Plavalaguna voiced by Inva Mula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inva_Mula).

The lyrics-Italian and English:
Il dolce suono mi colpì di sua voce!
Ah, quella voce m'è qui nel cor discesa!
Edgardo! io ti son resa. Edgardo! Ah! Edgardo, mio! Si', ti son resa!
fuggita io son da' tuoi nemici. (nemici)
Un gelo me serpeggia nel sen!
trema ogni fibra!

Oh, me felice!
Oh gioia che si sente, e non si dice!
Ardon gl'incensi!
Splendon le sacre faci, splendon intorno!
Ecco il ministro!
Porgimi la destra!
Oh lieto giorno!
Al fin son tua, al fin sei mio,
a me ti dona un Dio.
Ogni piacer più grato,
mi fia con te diviso
Del ciel clemente un riso
la vita a noi sarà.

The sweet sound of his voice struck me!
Ah, that voice has entered my heart!
Edgardo! I surrender to you, oh my Edgardo!
I have escaped from your enemies.
A chill creeps into my breast!
Every fibre trembles!
My foot falters!
Sit down by the fountain with me a while!
Alas, the tremendous phantom arises and separates us!
Let us take refuge here, Edgardo, at the foot of the altar.
It is scattered with roses!

A heavenly harmony, tell me, do you not hear it?
Ah, the marriage hymn is playing!
They are preparing the rite for us! Oh, how happy I am!
Oh joy that is felt but not said!
The incense is burning!
The holy torches are shining, shining around!
Here is the minister!
Give me your right hand!
Oh joyful day!
At last I am yours, at last you are mine,
A god gives you to me.
Let me share
The greatest pleasures with you,
A smile from merciful heaven,
Life will be ours.

Here are the lyrics to Take Me To Church (The Goddess Lives ) and I Put A Spell On You

"Take Me To Church"

My lover's got humour
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week

'We were born sick, ' you heard them say it

My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom.'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you—

I was born sick,
But I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice

Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful

That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am Human
Only then I am Clean
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[Chorus 2x:]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

The lyrics to I Put a Spell On You-
I put a spell on you
Because you're mine
Stop the things you do
Watch out, I ain't lying
I can't stand
No running around
I can't stand
No putting me down
I put a spell on you
Because you're mine, oh yeah
Stop the things you do
Watch out, I ain't lying
Oh, oh, I love you, I love you
I love you anyhow
I don't care if you don't want me
I'm yours right now
I put a spell on you
Because you're mine, mine, mine
Oh, ooh you're mine

It was a really good movie, and the music in the movie was great, including this wonderful performance of the exquisitely beautiful Il Dolce Suono (The Sweet Sound) from Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor:
. I'm pretty much in agreement with Luc Besson (movie director) sens of beauty. Visuals, music choices and even humor.

Yes, it`s definitely liked by many, Maleth.
I like music from lots of genres with some exceptions, rap is one. I don`t like heavy metal either and I know there is a style called Rap-metal which fuses the two..so I can safely say I wont be putting that on any of my playlists:startled:

Lovely music and a very fitting title considering our recent discussions...http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/smile.gif

However, I have been informed that the posters on Eurogenes have determined, based on the latest scientific methods, that certain "Caucasus" ladies, who were either dragged off by their hair or were Amazons who forcibly had their way with the poor steppe men bore more than a passing resemblance to Kim Kardashian! LOL!

As per the music, I figured you'd get the joke even if nobody else did. But as for Kim Kardashian versus Bronze Age Warriors as imagined by Eurogenes and friends, that is a scary prospect. And if it did come down to a battle, my money is on Kim Kardashian. She's one of those quintessentially American figures whose only redeeming qualities are boundless courage and optimism, but those are not qualities to underestimate. I certainly wouldn't want to meet her in a dark tent on the steppes, but I suppose some of the lads who hang around the Eurogenes Blog like to imagine they could keep up with her (they couldn't).

Angela and Aberdeen,

I agree Davidski has an exaggerated Conan-Barbarian view of ancient steppe people, but there is evidence for what they say.

If lets say close to 100% of steppe Y DNA was R1a and R1b(which is what ancient DNA suggests) and EHG-derived, where did their ENF ancestry come from? In western Europe we get the same picture that WHG-EEF admixture was if anything mostly WHG male and EEF female, which can explain the high amount of I and C-V20 in Neolithic farmers. If WHG-type people lived in Greece and gave EEF over 30% WHG(if they came out of west Asia 100% ENF) I guess that could also be an explanation.

Modern European mtDNA is overwhelmingly west Asian, yet autosomally they aren't.

Maybe WHG-ANE women were bigger, more masculine-looking, and ugly, so hunter men preferred ENF-heavy females. This is not impossible, we see similar trends today.

The Venetian Carnevale is a very different "kettle of fish" from the Brasilian variety...not at all a Bacchanalia, although I'm sure that the masks in the past allowed for a certain amount of, shall we say, discrete misbehavior.http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/smile.gif

This is the Venice Carnival...an opportunity to show off one's artistry, craftsmanship, elegance and ability to create beauty. The music is provided by Rondo Veneziano, a group of mostly female musicians who play Baroque style music on original instruments, but with "rock" elements. I like their work very much. That's not to say that there won't be gondoliers singing O Sole Mio, but that's because that's what the tourists request.

We also have a much smaller Carnevale in Viareggio in Toscana, which is different yet again...more an opportunity to provide fun for children and at the same time to lampoon political and other easily ridiculed people!http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/grin.png (See from 2:00 forward). It's a pretty innocent affair most of the time...the song asks a lovely girl to come to the sea, use the familiar "tu" form, and share a kiss. http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/smile.gif

The Venitian Carnival is quite distinctive and maybe somber at times, but the costumes fit in so well with the ambiance and creates a wonderful experience.

Yes, it's very beautiful, but definitely restrained. As a city Venice has been seen by certain authors as having a certain "sadness" to it, but given enough cold and rain, any city can seem "sad", not to mention the deterioration that has taken place over the centuries. That's not how I think of it, though. Like a lot of other Italian cities it spells "romance" to me. This is my favorite song about Venice. My parents used to dance so beautifully to it.

I suppose I meant less well known than Venice or Brazil and so fewer tourists rather than "smaller". It's actually quite large...people spend all year preparing the floats. Yes, it's similar to those for which you provided a link. All of them are a far cry from Brazil or Mardi Gras in New Orleans, which as I've posted a couple of times before I absolutely loathedhttp://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/laughing.gif! Thank you for the links, very interesting, enjoyed that haha. I have read a little about the ancient Carnival which some of it can also be attributed to pre Chirstian era in some instances. Ancient carnival was more of full participation from the people without having much audience to watch a particular spectacle. Different regions develop their own themes. Though I agree with you with the general folly and shock effect. We have a different and spontaneous Carnival which is prefered with the younger generations on the Island of Gozo that probably is more authentic in style compared to the floats and parades to the Valletta one.

Indeed.

Gloria Estefan, the first one, came on the scene as part of a group called the Miami Sound Machine that had a lot of hits in the 80's. The original members were all Cuban born Cuban Americans. I guess you could say their music was Latin American influenced. Their big hits were in English, but they also did some Spanish language songs. They were pretty popular at the time for party or dance music, but even then it would never have been played in a department store, at least not in the northeastern U.S.! South Florida is another world. I never heard the second woman until just recently, again in a store. She's apparently "big" right now in the Latin music world.

This was also a hit for them:

Oh, as to the skin, the secret is stay in the shade and include lots of olive oil in your diet...in this case maybe coconut oil? I do so like that she has a normal woman's body and doesn't starve herself into that waif look.

It's a different world to the one in which our grandparents lived, yes? No more black kerchiefs and sensible shoes once you hit thirty-five or forty if you're a woman, thank God! At my great aunt's ninetieth birthday I asked her what innovation or change she had witnessed in her long life which she most appreciated. I expected her to say the automobile or airplanes or washing machines or something. You know what she said? She most loved that she didn't have to wear those kerchiefs any more and could get her hair done at the hairdressers and could wear a pretty dress even in her eighties! (She did look lovely even in her eighties...a figure like a girl and her hair was barely grey.) You see where I get it?

Have I ever mentioned that I really like Adam Levine and Maroon 5? Not that this is admirable behavior, of course....a bad woman and worse mother. My great aunt would have been appalled. She was a romantic who found her true love at sixteen and never wavered. She told me once that as the day would fade she would wash her face and comb her hair and start to look down the lane. When she saw her Gianni appear over the hill she said her heart would lift and start to beat faster. http://cdn.eupedia.com/forum/images/smilies/main/smile.gif

That was very sweet from your great Zia. Very typical of people of their age and with all the freedom we have today there are still such couples which is very heart warming.

Thats a very nice song by the way. I would not say its very common but its well know that some younger people are attracted to older (much older maybe) women. Some are open about it which I have no problem. But for some its a taboo subject as it does not represent the norm of course :)

The song isn't really about that, of course. I expect he did it for "shock" value, as indeed it's not accepted as much as when the man is older.

I thought of posting this yesterday...it's another of his songs I really like...well, I like a lot of them from his Maroon 5 days especially...

Goodness, I'm surprised...do they play Burnett and Rutherford in Serbia? Or are you a Serbian American who somehow developed an interest in traditional American music?

Burnett and Rutherford are pretty world-renowned. "Man of Constant Sorrow" is one of their songs, covered by many recording artists. Easy to find. Their version of Man of Constant Sorrow is extremely rare to find though.

Sad that nobody has commented on Blind Uncle Gaspard:

Really interesting song. He says he has to go where nobody can ever see him. And some things about his cat. Blind Uncle Gaspard is a musician I found recently; he has a lot of great songs. So sad that nobody has ever heard his music. His songs are almost like a secret. I overlooked this song at first but as someone of Cajun heritage I later found it to be quite interesting. I also had many French and French Canadian acquaintances tell me they found it quite fascinating as well.

Amazing song. I got a flashback to 1994 when I was a kid. Very mid-1990s sounding song. Turn the volume up all the way on your speakers, and maybe a little bit of that bass. :)

Reminds me of the 1994-1995-1996 era; before I started school. The 90s were great.

Country and American folk music is popular in Serbia. This is not due to Hollywood Western type films (although it is possible that they, among other things, in a period of time contributed to the popularization). Melodies and sounds this music, which has European and African roots, are what makes them so special and popular. Basically it is the music of the American South and the region of Appalachia. I think there are some similar cultural and other vibrations that make up that people prefer some music, no matter what they are in different parts of the world.

Parlami d'amore Mariu' from the Three Tenors:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHTR9kbjrg8

How beautiful you are and even more so tonight, Maria!
A starry smile shines in those blue eyes.
Even if destiny will be adverse tomorrow
tonight I'm close to you, so what's the use in sighing?

Speak to me of love Maria!
You are my whole life.
Your two blue eyes are shining,
twinkling like two stars.

Tell me this isn't an illusion
Tell me that you're all mine
Here in your heart I don't suffer anymore
Speak to me of love Maria!
I know what a pretty and red-blooded siren you are
I know that whoever looks into those blue eyes of yours gets lost
but why should I care if everyone laughs at me
better off in the bottomless whirlpool as long as I'm always with you

Speak to me of love Maria!
You are my whole life!
Your two blue eyes are shining,
twinkling like two stars.

Tell me this isn't an illusion.
Tell me that you're all mine.
Here in your heart I don't suffer anymore
Speak to me of love Maria!

Repeat.

Let Maria appear (famm' affaccià a Maria)
While I'm in the middle of the street(ca stongo mmiez' 'a via)
Hoping to see her.(speruto d''a vedè).
I don't have a moment's peace (Nun trovo n'ora 'e pace)
My nights turn into days ('A nott' 'a faccio juorno),
I'm always here (sempe pe stà ccà attuorno)
Hoping to speak to her.(speranno 'e ce parlà!)
O Maria, O Maria. (Oi Mari', oi Mari)
How much sleep I lose over you!(Quanta suonno ca perdo pe' te)
Let me sleep (Famm' addurmi)
In your embrace. (abbracciato nu poco cu te)
O Maria, O Maria (Oi Marì, oi Marì)
How much sleep I lose over you. (Quanta suonno ca perdo pe' te)

I think Middle of the Night were popular in Europe, not US, some people consider the group as vanguard of Abba.

I loved this song of Rod Stewart, I learned English memorizing its verses.

It is interesting Rod Stewart shares first place with Jean Michel Jarre for the largest concert on the world. They had 3,500,000 (!) visitors, Rod in Rio de Janeiro 1994., and Jarre in Moscow 1997.

One of good songs of Rod Stewart is Downtown Train, but I prefer same song performed by Patty Smith.

Here is one song of this excellent signer:
