appropriate to have one in the Maltese language, one of my favorites.........Big Band brothers Rock band. 'Siehbi fil kabord tal kcina' hmm strange title 'My friend in the kitchen cupboard'....I like the song however
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHnVLIyD_bs
Ok I got to know of the meaning of the title and lyrics....its about a child who is bullied at school and imagines he has a perfect friend living in the kitchen cupboards.
Tribali is an unusual group producing interesting music. They even have a very faithful following

It seems like a very vibrant music scene, Maleth, especially for such a small place in terms of population. Is most of it in English? If it is, does it make it easier to cross over and get some coverage in Britain, for example?

Claudia Faniello has recently sang in Marina di Ragusa (in the end of the summer by the way). Ira Losco is the best, yummi.

Very few sing in Maltese Angela as that will be a guarantee that their work will just remain locally with a very small Market. However Im not sure how much of the ones sung in English get any more sales. Most of them do it through itunes but there is always a possibility to have better sales singing in English.
I know for sure that most artists do much from their own pockets and from the love of it which is good as they keep the Island rocking :). Some singers made a name overseas. Kevin borg won Swedish Idol some three years ago. You hear of the occasional Maltese singer that hits the topuk 40 but normally its people who set home in the UK.

Only sing in english?
Ironically enough Claudio Baglioni revived a 70's Maltese song (L'ahhar bidwi f'wied Il asel / the last farmer in Honey valley) in Perfect Maltese accent. Yes very sad indeed that we only have folk songs in Maltese and other numbers that are just reserved for local song Festivals without much promotion. I will post a few with no video to accompany them and maybe inferior recordings to the ones aimed to sell internationally.

Sammy bartolo 'Kemm u sabih' How beautiful. Wrote this when he knew he was passing away
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RBSY6C50dk
How beautiful it is
How beautiful it is that in the heavy shadow of the clouds
You close your eyes to see the darkness young man
How beautiful it is to sleep and wakeup
But still see darkness even though your eyes are opened
How beautiful it is to live and live your life in time that is not a tool to show you the end
Because its time itself that will remove all you have achieved
Let the sun in its rise and in its setting
will find you caressing the fog
Let the moon play with the wheat stalk
that has to die to seed the ground toregenerate
How beautiful it is to climb the top ofall the hills
and down in darkness pass through the hidden and mysterious paths
How beautiful it is to be forgotten from the crowds
And your name will become a comfort reserved only to you
How beautiful is the sunrise and it never gets dark
or if it gets dark there will be no heart beating fast out of fear
How beautiful it is if the star keeps shining
it will find the fishing port with beating waves
How beautiful it is to keep living yourlife till the end
and at the end you find a door to start all over again
How beautiful are these words once I believe them
and I believe them because I wrote them in this song

I hate to be a pest, but do you by any chance have an English translation for this handy, or even just the lyrics (I could probably make out quite a bit of it if I saw it written, which is the case for me even with very "foreign" sounding dialects of Italian far from the standard and even with things like Provencal)? I'm intrigued by the title. Don't go to any real bother, though, I know we're all busy; it's enjoyable just as it is...

How very lovely and moving, Maleth. I've saved this one to my collection. I adore things like this... I've told you before when you've posted songs in Maltese that there is clearly a poetic and sensitive temperament in the Maltese. Beautiful indeed.

Pest? its a pleasure
here is a quick translation. Its written in an era when sons and daughters were not working fields anymore (migrating) but the songs talk of getting jobs in towns and often parents were left alone with the farm work the only trade they knew.
Like a hermit
Cut off from the crowds
among trees and brambles
I go to make my living
No more sons and daughters
now Working in the towns
The Last farmer in Honey Valley is me
They come to Honey Valley on thosebeautiful days
They come for walks, they come to rest
aboundand fields and others reserved
for the hunters in time for turtledoves
behind the tilling machine, working alone
The last farmer in honey valley is me
snails are out with first rains, tymefrom the rocks
They come to honey valley they comeevery sunday
It was a dry year, how bad it was for the fruit
No good sales, these last days I was alittle tired
Behind the tilling machine working alone
the last farmer in honey valley is me
They come to honey valley on thosebeautiful days
They come to honey valleys on Sundays
Like a hermit
Cut off from people
amongst trees and brambles
I go to make my living
No more son and daughters
Now working in the towns

I had a feeling I would really like it, and I do. It could have been written by one of the farmers in my own area. Lovely.

Im glad you like them Angela and can also find them inspiring. You are right, the songs in the local Maltese song festival 'Anja tal poplu' (song of the people) seem to be more focused on the lyrics rather then Music and often covering current social situations.

Now for a change a Patriotic song and of course in Maltese from a rock opera Gensna (Our Nation) that was written soon after being a Republic in the 70's. This is the latest version from a refreshed performance last year. 'Tema '79' is sung by Ira Losco.

(rough translation)
Between yellowish brambles
Between the Thirsty thorns
red flowers growing on the hill sides and the plains
Between the sad clouds
Between the mists
No one can silence the melody from the heavens
amongst the flock of birds
Today we are through with our blood, people of steel
Today that we crave no more
The sea channels that surround us
our neighbors and all nations
Finally this land is our home
This is time to rejoice all livingthings
and the wings of the free
flying to the sun
The Red and white I kiss you (flag)
Nothing like it, it will never end
Today we are through with our blood, people of steel
Today that we dont crave no more
Oh God look down up on us
This nation is living a new
Peace and Joy will reign upon us
We will not fail you, always praise youand respect you

Lyrics
We suffer silently
always fighting to break free
we were living in a shadow
we were too scared to let go
Wouldn't accept defeat
When by losing we were winning
We had to be courageous
to be able to get through this
and then it hits
Break through the silence
The noise is louder then its ever been
Create something timeless
Never look back
the past is the past
I had no choice but to become a warrior
I had to conquer I did not break
I left my faith in hope
We are not the enemy
we are just tired of suffering
we broke through the shadows
we finally let go
It was not defeat
It was us truly winning
we are courageous
and we got through this
and then it hits
Im a warrior I will conquer
Im a warrior I will conquer
Im a warrior

Very nice lyrics, Maleth, and pretty girl. I know an Italian American lawyer, writer and blogger who looks just like her.
I don't know if you're aware of the controversy around the Italian selection? I hope all was harmony in Malta.
This is what was chosen...too old school for half the population, and they were quite vociferous about it.
Grande Amore...I don't mind the song, but the video is really hokey, and derivative...we've all watched Ghost, yes? They're also not terribly good actors, but maybe that's because they're so young. There's an English translation after the video. Sorry, no time to do my own today...plus, these are pretty good.

I close my eyes and think of her
The sweet scent of her skin
It 'a voice inside that is taking me where the sun rises
Alone, are the words
But if they should be written everything can change
No more fear I'll want to shout this great love
Love, only love is what I feel
Tell me why when I think, I just think of you
Tell me why when I see, I see only you
Tell me why when I believe, I believe in you only great love
Tell me you never
That will never leave me
Tell me who you are
Breath of my days of love
Tell me what you know
That only me choose
Now you know
You are my only, great love
Pass springs,
Cold days and stupid to remember
Cursed nights, lost no sleep other to make love
Love, you are my love
Forever, for me.
Tell me why when I think, I just think of you
Tell me why when I love, love only you
Tell me why I live, I live only in you great love
Tell me you never
That will never leave me.
Tell me who you are
Breath of my days of love
Tell me what you know
I do not ever be wrong
Tell me you're
What are my only, great love

We do have a mouth
To kiss each other
Or better say
To taste each other
If we were born crying
May be there is a meaning for every suffering
I am ready to live
Look at you and I know why
We are made to love
In spite of us
We have two arms
And a heart
This is all you will have from me
Come forward, my love
Come forward, my love
We do have hands
To grab each other
Spinning together
Like clockworks and then
We do have eyes
To see
But if you close them
We recognise each other
We are perfect machines
A myracle of nerves and soul
I will not ask you why
I hug you tightly and believe in you
We are made to love
In spite of us
We have two arms
And a heart
This is all you will have from me
Come forward, my love
Come forward, my love
Can you hear this noise?
It is just my heart
Let's split it in two
I keep it for you
Its better half
Come forward, my love
Come on, come forward, my love
We are made to love
In spite of us
We have two arms
And a heart
This is all you will have from me
Come on, come forward, my love

Glad you like the lyrics Angela. As we had discussed before it seems that lyrics are becoming less important and sometimes they hardly make any sense at all. In regards to the trio il Volo song Grande Amore visa vi Nek, Fatti avente amore, I find them both very Italian sounding with the first as you said more old school. However Grande Amore would have that refreshing more traditional style compared to the vast majority that strive to create a more contemporary sound that makes many sound the same on the night of the festival. It can leave an impression and that's a driving force for the 'genuine' voting public.
Neks song is more catchy but trio il Volo has more vocal abilities (which seems to be taken in account these days) and given the amount of publicity the songs are given before actual festival it would be an advantage. There was a time that the songs were only allowed to be heard the first time in the night of the festival that gave very catchy tunes an advantage over maybe more creative and more artistic musical creations.
I know what you mean about love lyrics, but they always seem to make sense to the younger audiences who suddenly relate the situations to their own 'early crushes' that can feel strongest.....and they make the biggest chunk of the voting public
talking about Eurovision song festival seems like many people say they don't care for it, but its estimated that its watched by 200 million people, making it the biggest show on earth

I wasn't thinking so much of her singing talent, although it's definitely a plus! I was thinking more of her other attributes, given that I have more than a passing acquaintance with Italian men. A very pretty girl...

Now that sounded poetic but so true. Glad that brightened things a little :). Reggae sounds good in Summer weather surrounded by Clear seas. Bob Marley is surely an icon. One love was always one of my fav Reggae numbers. We often have these kind of different events all through the summer. Very uplifting and pleasant.

The Caribbean is only about three hours by plane from me, and most of my memories of Reggae are from there...really magical nights...
Not all of them, however. One of my closest friends is from Jamaica. She's an awesome cook in addition to all her other talents, and a Reggae fanatic. Her summer barbecues are a marvel!
I did enjoy it. Very upbeat and fun. I hope it did pretty well at Eurovision. I've said it before...it's remarkable how such a small place can produce so much good music. Do Maltese songs get a lot of play time on British radio?

Not much really, one has to live in the UK to get any promotion. I guess the local scene will also be seen as passe as a style on international standards, but locals are still into these styles of Music :).

A deep breath in simplicity
A closed mind because of this community
Ashes to Ashes dust to dust
All these children are so happy
they don't need to see the future
the only life is that of today
how long are we going to pack a little
travel the world when we feel like it
Children of the fields with no borders
they traveled with the biggest ships
we pass on the message of this challenge
here the rhythm of the flying angel
Im going to do this all for you
your hands in mine travelling the world
Horse cabs or the bus trains or the planes
Sometimes walking
Filling our life with memories
with a life among people
when we are alone in silence
I will show you the whole world
and the closure of the valley
alone in the silence of the valley
we share the attraction
and the purification of nature
in the attention there is no misfortune
this is the time to cross the world
your hands in mine travelling the world
Horse cabs or the bus trains or the planes
Sometimes walking
Filling our life with memories
with a life among people

The promise
Once in a field
I saw a little girl
Making sign of the cross and crying
She left the flower from her hand
Love has turned from joy to pain
It was three in the morning and still thinking
what if her father was still alive?
Her mind going round and round
tears on her pillow asking God so many questions
God why am going through all this
I am still a young girl and all asking what is wrong with me
all i can do is smile back and say I am fine
No one knows what I am really feeling
The pain did not break her
and her outlook was turning strong
growing older was not easy
She is not the innocent girl she used to be
Does not chat with God and his mother anymore
Her life was going downhill
This young girl grown to an adult
and fell to the temptations around
She made her first friendship
a friendship she never had before
A friend who shared sorrows
Both together were in heaven
They walked hand in hand and made a pact
Promise me you will never leave me
I never had anyone like you
talking all my troubles to you
I feel I cant live without you
They now hold hands, they both had matured
and can express freely their desires
The moral of this story is that you should never give up
because the girl in the story is me and my life has changed with the pact
and i say thank you to her that she changed my life and is still with me.
Once in a field
I saw a little girl
Making sign of the cross and crying
She left the flower from her hand
Love has turned from joy to pain
