Where does she "pass" out of her country - friend of mine

As the title states. Where does she pass? I recently discovered all of her grandparents are from Liguria (North West Italy). She's a friend of mine. Height around 1.72/1.73 m tall.

all southern french and italian riviera - pre garibaldi ( monaco, nice, menton etc when under ligurian pre 1860 influence)

I just saw the film "Unbroken" yesterday, about Louis Zamperini, another person of generally northern Italian ancestry, although in this case an Italian-American who was, at various points in his life an Olympian, a gunner in the Pacific theater during World War II, a prisoner of war of the Japanese, and later an inspirational speaker. I would also have a difficult time placing him very far from northern Italy. Perhaps the only exceptions might be some places in the Balkans or southeastern France?

To me, he looks sort of like a relative of General Franco. Scary thought.

The girl you posted in first post, photo 2 and 3. Fist one was not conclusive for me.


The guy could be indeed placed in Dalmatia.

I don't think a Franco type character would go to Japan after the war to seek reconciliation after having been brutalized and tortured in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, so looks can be deceiving.

I actually don't think they look very much alike, especially not when they were younger. There's more of a resemblance when Franco gets very old, I think, and there are some bones finally showing. Before that he looks sort of "podgy" to me. (How's that for a forensic anthropology description? :grin He also has a different mouth, nose, and even more different eyes, so large and dark...the pigmentation is darker all around, in fact.

Sometimes I think all old people start to look alike.







I do think that there is some overlap between some Italians and some Spaniards. I don't know why they don't come to my mind all that often when the question arises in these kinds of games about where some people can pass. Probably it's because I go to France so often, and we have so many Balkan immigrants in Italy that those comparisons occur to me more frequently.

For example, of the two I think Miguel Catalan looks more like Zamperini




Actually, from certain angles, I think Zamperini has a bit of a look of Tyrone Power, although Power was darker and much handsomer, of course.

To get back on track...on reflection, I could see the young woman passing in parts of Spain as well. As I mentioned in my prior post, I don't think of those resemblances immediately for northern Italians, but I think it's just a function of the people I see more frequently. When I think back on the time I spent in Spain as a student, I do recall thinking that the Catalans and other people I saw in northern Spain, and the Basques over all didn't look all that different from the people among whom I grew up in northwestern Italy.

Just because I had a moment, I googled Basque women, and I think a good number of them would "fit" amongst us.

I have enough spare time to create a "guess her location" map based on your answers. Here it is.

I don't know many balkanites, so I don't know if she can pass there or not. I know many more southern french and spanish people, and I think she could fit there.
Southern euros share a lot of history and genetics, so maybe one pick doesn't exclude the other a priori.

Some more maps that might be informative for similarities and differences. Obviously these were done before the discovery of snps, but they've held up pretty well generally. The areas we're talking about, particularly northern Italy, southern France, and northern Spain, are at the same latitude, along long established trade routes, and were affected in similar ways by the broad folk migrations that explain the peopling of Europe. The same can be said, to a lesser degree perhaps, for certain areas in the Balkans.

This is the (supposed) distribution of the Ligures people in the Iron Age (being a "full" ligurian, she's very likely a descendent of them, in part, at least)

It's not shown here, but, at least until a certain point in history, the Ligures territory reached the southern border with Spain of nowadays France.
