Syria's antiquities chief has expressed guarded relief as government troops push jihadists of the Islamic State (IS) group back from the remains of the ancient city of Palmyra.

The jihadists, who have demolished several ancient sites in neighbouring Iraq, had advanced to within a kilometre of the UNESCO world heritage site, one of the jewels of classical architecture.
"We have good news today, we feel much better," antiquities chief Mamoun Abdulkarim told AFP news agency.
"There was no damage to the ruins, but this does not mean we should not be afraid."

This is a very Good News. Thanks to Syrian soldiers who protected this wonderful city.
The bad news is that ISIS remains very close and the danger that they will try another attack is high.
The very bad news is that ISIS-Daesh continues to have covert support from Turkish islamic groups, Saudi Arabia, Qatar.

Good news also for the inmates, as Assads troops would have killed most before withdrawing.
