Italian football has always been mostly a North West Italy affair. Italian oldest clubs are northwestern: Genoa CFC (1893), Juventus FC (1897), AC Milan (1899), with the exception of north-eastern Udinese (1898).

There is a much less popular team, especially abroad, called Pro Vercelli that is among the oldest clubs still active in Italy, and is now in Serie B (the second league of the italian football). They were a football superpower in the early days of italian football, then decayed.
