The Internet has affected businesses very much both in god and bad ways. The good ways have been Google, Amazon and Alibaba have become behemoths. The bad ways are that brick-and-mortar companies are threatened. Sears was once a very big company but not on survival mode. Let us go to the extreme and imagine the consequences. All brick-and-mortar companies disappear with only online companies in existence similar to mail-order stores (online stores are just electronic versions of mail-order stores, really). You would not be able to see or feel the goods you are buying. It is like a blind date. A blind sale. You don’t know what you are getting until it arrives at your doorstep. It might not be what was portrayed. That beautiful girl or handsome guy may not be at all like the photo. Hmm, What to do? This is what we are faced with the Internet. Fraudsters and criminals would proliferate the Internet and the government has a hands-off attitude towards the Internet. You send in your and it disappears and your calls are ignored or the company disappears from the web.
Bitcoin is an online crypto money. It is used mostly by criminals and Chinese corrupt politicians laundering their money abroad. The creator of bitcoin seems to been arrested.

You could also add all the racists hiding behind pseudonyms on various anthrofora spewing their filth and lies with absolutely no consequences. You can't even sick the Mafia on them because you don't know their names. Although, I suppose with enough time you could maybe find them. (Just kidding, just kidding. I'm the last person in the world to do anything illegal, trust me).

Or how about all the Jihadi websites brainwashing people with borderline personality disorders? It even helps these losers find each other so they can get married.

Then there's all the disgusting Pedophile sites, and snuff films.

I could have done without knowing there are so many sickos in this world.

Sometimes I think we were better off without it.

You should check the whole photoalbum on Flickr to see what's been left of it before taking it down.
Now only tower left, that's being adopted for community use:

With all the brick-and-mortar businesses closing unemployment would increase. The online stores are just taking advantage of the stores by having people check out the products and order online for cheaper prices. Politicians need to look carefully at this or their region would be full of unemployed people. The politicians need to make a group effort to require online companies to carry full inventory of what they are selling online and to have a physical presence so sales and other relevant taxes, rent and wages are paid. It is this escaping of local taxes and lack of physical display of products that is inconvenient for shoppers and disadvantage for traditional stores that have physical presence by paying rent, wages and taxes that boost the local economy.

I lived through the era when anonymous threatening phone calls were made as the phones could not trace the caller. Of course, those days are gone. But now the focus should be to trace anonymity in the Internet. Anonymity is a boon for all kinds of illegal and repugnant activities. The thing is legitimate use of anonymity such as seeking immunity from abusive authorities or freedom of speech, or exercising of rights also benefit. It is a difficult situation and need to be carefully studied.

Give us an example of brick and mortar shop closing due to online shopping? Maybe some book stores, but this is it. Unemployment is very low in US and Canada.

The online stores are just taking advantage of the stores by having people check out the products and order online for cheaper prices.
And yet after 20 years of Amazon's online presence there is more stores in my area than ever before. Can you explain this?

Politicians need to look carefully at this or their region would be full of unemployed people.
Again, unemployment is low after 20 years of online shopping.

The politicians need to make a group effort to require online companies to carry full inventory of what they are selling online and to have a physical presence so sales and other relevant taxes, rent and wages are paid.
You pay GST and PST on online goods, right? Plus duty charges when applicable. Distribution centers of many online goods are located in Canada, they employ canadians, and canadians deliver goods to your door. All pay incometax.

It is this escaping of local taxes and lack of physical display of products that is inconvenient for shoppers and disadvantage for traditional stores that have physical presence by paying rent, wages and taxes that boost the local economy.
Where do you get your information?!!!

I guess you missed what I wrote in the beginning

It is all I think could/would happen. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

Though you say it is hypothetical scenario, you seem to worry about this a lot.

It is a disaster waiting to happen.
So why there are no signs of such problem? I think your worries are just worries nothing more.
Technological progress always worried some people. Usually the ones who worry a lot about everything anyway. ;)
In 17 hundreds or so mob burned first textile factory in Paris, because they worried that machines will make them unemployed. 300 years fast forward and machines produce almost anything and yet we always manage to create new jobs to replace what we lost to machines. On top of it, our working day gets shorter, everybody can afford full stomach and a computer, go on vacations, we live longer and healthier, etc, and unemployment is lower than in 17 hundreds, when surplus villagers started to flock to cities looking for work.
Well, I say, let the machines take over all the work, lol. How about machines will produce all and we don't need to work anymore?

That's even bigger disaster waiting to happen.

I know, everything new scares you completely, even the fantasy movies are scary. Remember movie "Outbreak"? Hypothetical Ebola outbreak which kills few billion people worldwide? Yes, another Hollywood movie. Guess what, we had ebola outbreak recently. Thanks to new technologies and world getting together under US leadership Ebola is gone and only few thousand people died. Imagine how it would go down if this happened 100 years ago. Remember Spanish Flu pandemic? Tens of millions dead around the globe!

It is better to have an inkling as to what could possibly go wrong than to be smacked with a disaster without warning. Look at the migrants' situation. Totally unprepared. Removing forces that that suppressed Islamic extremism seems now like a bad idea. Having Saddam Hussein and Qadaffi around is distasteful but sometimes it better to hold one's nose than to stir up the sh*t.

It was not distasteful for people living there. That's one of the major problems here on forum, because it promotes imposing (what they call and think is) democracy on people with bombs, death and destruction.

Personally I was okay with Saddam and Qaddafi but the western politicians did not like the situation and the USAians wanted revenge for the airplane crash off Scotland (?).

Notorious hackers

We associate hackers with damage but the smarter hackers started companies

The question why so many viruses with such gifted hackers who created companies?

Could the security software like MacAfee and others actually doing a subtle protection racket? Write and produce viruses covertly and release them anonymously and sell security that are the antidote for the viruses. Neat, eh?

On the other hand we know business is cut-throat so could these founders actually be finding vulnerabilities in their competitors' software and try to sabotage them with viruses. it is an ongoing war with gifted hackers attacking each other. Of course we are talking about commercial activities and not national and academic efforts. Who knows.
