I took a 23andme ancestry genetics test a while ago and my ydna results were r1b1b2a1a2f*. I am just wondering what the likelihood is that it originated in France. As far as I am aware my paternal line is supposed to have come from France and I know that R1b-L21 is the "celtic haplogroup".

Your Ydna and surname goes hand in hand, so you'd need to figure out the origins of your surname to answer that question. :) If your Surname originates from France, your Ydna should originate from the Gauls unless if your direct ancestors came from Brittany. If your direct Ancestors came from Brittany, you could easily directly decended from Romanized-Britons or Gauls.

Hi Twilight,

I am english and my last name is Snooks.

However, R-P312/S116 > Z290 > L21/S145 > DF13 > FGC5494 > FGC5561 > FGC7448 > FGC5496 > FGC5521 > FGC5549 > FGC5511 > FGC5517 > 7564743-C-A
is atlantic celtic?

Snooks is found in hampshire where the belgic celtic tribes settled?

Although my big y test closest matches are north of england borderlands.

Any ideas?

Kind regards

Hello there Warrider, welcome to Eupedia. R1b-FGC7448 according to the Phylogenetic tree is located in Britian, France and Germany and all of the subclades of R1b-FGC5494 are present in the Isles, having all of the subclades clustered in one area usually means that the Haplogroup originated there in the Isles; unless if there other historical explanations such as invasions. Although there is genetic evidence that suggest that some Romanized-Britons might have fled to Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany; given to the fact that R1B-L21 seems to be higher in those areas, some Romanized-Britons decided to stay and assimilate into the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. It's also worth noting that In order to become a Roman citizen, you had to either join the Auxiliary units or be descended from an auxiliary. Once you became an auxiliary soldier, the Roman Government tended to move their troops far away from your ancestral homeland. Once you retired from the Auxiliary after 25 years, you were often given farmland.

Here are some links to Eupedia's R1b page and some info on Auxillary troops. :)
