View Full Version : Sense of Humor

Are you funny?

I don’t mean funny in the sense of having the laughter of other people at your expense accompanied by pointing, but rather I mean intentionally funny.

The question is not as straightforward as it might seem, for our conception of exactly what a “sense of humor” is can be pretty slippery.

What Is a Sense of Humor, Anyway?

Having a sense of humor might mean having the ability to entertain other people by making them laugh, but it can also mean having a quick wit that is frequently employed to skewer other people with snide comments.

Some might define the sense of humor as the ability to see humor in everyday life or as appreciating the cleverness of puns and other word play, and may think it entirely possible to possess a good sense of humor without ever having those around them become aware of it.

In any case, a sense of humor is a socially valued trait that almost all of us would prefer to have more, rather than less, of -- akin to the way that we think about intelligence or good looks. A person with an undeveloped sense of humor lacks a social skill that puts him or her at a severe disadvantage in the hurly burly of everyday social life.

As desirable as a sense of humor might be, philosophers and psychologist have long struggled to understand exactly what it is or why it even exists.

I think I have more of a situational sense of humor, where I can find funny things in every day life. I've been told by my friends that I can make funny commentary to things as they happen. I guess that's where I feel most natural to execute the delivery of the joke.

I think it's so important to mental health to have the ability to see the humor in the human situation, including your own. It decompresses you, and helps you to cope.

It's also one of the most attractive human traits, imo, one that draws other people. I personally overlook a lot, maybe more than I should, if someone makes me laugh all the time. :)

I absolutely LOVE it. So much for the crap about not dying his hair. He still seems to have most of it, though, which is why his choice of hair style is so bizarre.

Another one, someone who never has a good hair day, and then I'll stop. I think he's brilliant, really admire his mind, the way he thinks and expresses himself, and I love that Southern drawl and the way he says, "Yes, ma'am" all the time, so much so that I could find him really attractive if it weren't for that haircut. The man mustn't have a shred of vanity. ALso, what were his parents thinking not to pin those ears back. :useless:

I think understanding and appreciating someone's sense of humor is an important aspect of the "chemistry" between two people.

I think the most fascinating difference in terms of humour is between those who use/appreciate irony, and those who don't. I find I get on a lot better with people who have a very dry sense of humour.

These kinds of people seem much more willing to laugh at themselves, or at a bad situation, compared to slapstick-loving, too-daft-to-comprehend-sarcasm pillocks.

Then again, my favourite joke is "why did the turkey cross the road - it was the chicken's day off", so what do I know about funny...

I feel like I could like both smart comedy, as well as slap-stick comedy.

imo shows like Seinfeld had a good mix of both of it with funny situational comedy, and characters like Kramer would add in sort of the slap stick comedy. I think George was the funniest character on that show.

I love slapstick myself, but I feel those who appreciate irony (or some other cerebral form of comedy) generally do like slapstick, in-your-face comedy just as well. I was talking more about those people who don't laugh at anything that isn't of the 'man getting hit by football' strain of humour

You and me both. I'm appalled, frankly, at the kind of rudeness which is becoming common and acceptable. When I think back to the list of instructions, the do this, don't even think of doing that, that preceded any visit to anyone else's home, well, it's a wonder I ever moved or opened my mouth at all! :)

In addition to it just being the right thing to do, when you treat people politely and with consideration and are complementary when at all possible, more than nine times out of ten you get the same back. That's what I always think about when people come back from trips and moan on and on about the rudeness of "the locals". With one exception, I've never had that experience in my life. Quite the contrary, in fact: I've made friends wherever I go.

Oh well, I'm getting crotchety I guess. :)

Well, certain types of behavior deserve some stern language, although I never curse, and I never get too personal.

Last time that I can remember was when I was having some work done on my house. I let them use our downstairs half bath, in addition to making them coffee in the morning, water etc. First, I found one of them, instead of getting a step ladder, standing on one of my chairs to reach something. My "What are you doing?" sent all the birds fleeing. :) The last straw was when I went into the bathroom they were using. A lot of men have issues with "aim", but this was beyond. They also did that little boy thing of not really washing their hands and so getting most of the grime on the hand towels. I hit the roof. I went out to where they were having lunch and told them that since apparently mommy didn't teach them how to go to the bathroom like a civilized person they could rent a port-a-potty, but before that they were going to buy cleaning supplies with bleach and clean that bathroom until it was as spotless as an operating room theater. Oh, and for good measure, I'd knock the chairs or other furniture over if I found them standing on something again. That fixed it. :) Those few people who think you're a pushover because you're pleasant and kind sometimes need a wake-up call.

I don't think people should worry. Every study I've ever seen indicates that among European descent people, NPRs (including not only children of infidelity, but births to unmarried women, and adoptions both formal and informal) account for 1-3% of births per generation.

That may be changing, but it was the fact for most of European history. Those taboos aren't broken easily, and women had few opportunities in the past as well.

Of course, this accumulates over the generations, so a lot of those trees up on the internet are not very reliable.

Zeus is Back!
I saw him yesterday afternoon on top of a Hill. (Others saw him too)
A storm was coming, and the entire sky was Dark, expect for a white bright cloud shaped as an old Man with long hair and a beard.
All of a sudden: a loud thunder, and a huge lightning appeared in the middle of the white cloud shaped as an old Man.
Immediately after that the Entire Sky opened up: Hail, Wind, and Rain. 20 minutes of Hell on Earth.
Disaster all around.
I don’t think was Thor, (too young and better looking). It could have been Odin, but I’m convinced was Zeus (Jupiter).
ps it doesn’t do me any good getting an “Emergency Alert” warning on my phone advising to take shelter after the Punch of the Storm has already gone by. :)

Wait...the comb on the knight's helmet resembles a chicken's comb..he wouldn't wear anything to make him resemble a weaker creature...maybe perhaps chickens were much bigger and stronger thousands of years prior and he carries around a chicken as a symbol of strength and dominance.

They descend from the t-rex, so maybe ancient knights from like BC rode on giant scaly monster chickens with sharp claws and teeth as opposed to horses or goats.

I doubt it. Nigella Lawson is of 100% Ashkenazi descent.

I've been following her for years on her various tv cooking shows, and I've never noticed any drastic changes. She's obviously had botox on her forehead, but so has the other woman. No woman in her fifties has no horizontal lines on her forehead. However, you can tell she hasn't had lots of facial botox, because people who do start getting "lumpy" faces. I'm sure Nigella also has had dermabrasion on her face, facials and on and on, and also she clearly wears make-up to disguise some natural signs of aging.

However, the differences are still there. Part of it is that as she's gotten older Lawson has put on weight. A little fat plumps out the face. :) Sometimes you have to choose between your face and trying to still wear your wedding dress comfortably thirty years later. She has at times put on a lot more than ten or fifteen pounds, however. She has also said she was always religious about not sun-bathing etc.

Part of it is indeed genetics. No offense intended, but I do think Southern Europeans (and Ashkenazim), on average seem to have "stronger" skin, with more collagen, and so have less wrinkling and sagging at comparable ages. I'm routinely guessed to be ten to fifteen years younger than my actual age, and my mother was the same.

The last part is indeed diet. I don't care how much vegetarians claim that their diet is the healthiest. I don't buy it. You need some nutrients that only animal proteins provide, and you need good healthy oils in your diet, preferably a lot of olive oil.

It's not as if she looks the same: that's impossible. She just looks good for her age.

Younger:

She looks good, but i prefer natural wrinkles than plastic surgery. I think underneath the eyes there's been some work done since there is an absence of "bags." Compare to the younger photo you just posted here with the first 3, she has more
bags in the younger one than now. Something "off" about it imo. I guess thats botox? Otherwise her genes are too good.

I feel like Elle in "Legally Blonde" again, giving lessons in cosmetology. :)

Botox isn't surgery: it's an injection of a liquid that partially paralyzes the muscles so they don't move. Surgery is when they "cut" the skin. I have nothing against plastic surgery per se, but I personally would never go under general anesthesia for vanity's sake, and you never know what you'll actually look like later.

I never saw any sign she had "bags" under her eyes when she was young. That happens to some people as they age. Thankfully not all. She probably had dark areas under her eyes that when young she didn't know how to erase with make-up. It's a big problem for a lot of even young women.

https://www.epainassist.com/images/Article-Images/bags-under-your-eyes.jpg

There are ads saying certain creams reduce the swelling, even over the counter creams. I think surgery is the only other option. Wrinkles are one thing, this is another. I might consider having surgery if I ever got this. I think it's hideous. Well, maybe if I got this wrinkled I'd do it as well. Poor woman, her skin is terrible. She how I waffle? :)

Maybe so. It wouldn't be surprising.

The fact is there's the type of humor enjoyed by middle school boys, say around 13 or so, and then there's the humor enjoyed by everyone else. Just curious as to how close to your "humor age" some of you are...

I also don't find anything funny about a supposed Italian disparaging his own women. That's usually the speciality of people like Zanatis trying to be wounding, or Nordicists from various countries such as we've had on here before.

Precipitevolissimevolmente.
One of the longest, if not the longest word in Italian.
