Thread dedicated to the canine races of Iberia witnesses and companions through the millennia.

They say that the dog is the best friend of man and it is possible.

The greyhound (from the Latin gallĭcus canis, 'dog of the Gaul'), or Spanish greyhound, is an autochthonous canine breed from Spain belonging to the group of shorthaired greyhounds (group X.3 in the FCI classification). 9 Although there is also a variety of hard hair.

It is a pure race, that is, that its characteristics have been achieved by selection over the centuries and not by crossing other races. Greyhounds are big runner dogs that can reach 70km / h

Podenco andaluz (Andalusian Hound)

Today we will show the Andalusian Podenco in its varieties. Because of their appearance many see the Egyptian dogs represented in the hieroglyphics but after genetic tests it was seen that it is a breed of European dog branches.

Podenco Maneto

The Podencos Andaluces like the other podencos have a very developed sense of sight, hearing and smell, which makes them good hunters, especially when it comes to rabbit hunting. In the huntings of big game practiced in the center and south of Spain the podencos constitute the nucleus of the rehalas (group of dogs of big game, whose number oscillates between 20 and 24), that usually are composed by podencos of big size for the harassment and for some medium-sized specimens such as poachers or search dogs. In small game, the medium and small varieties are used, either individually, in pairs or in recollects (gang of hunting dogs).

One of the most typical features of the large-sized hound, is the one of quitaor3 accompanying the gallas4 of greyhounds during the hunting of the hare. His work consists, first, in lifting and letting the rabona out of his bed or hiding place, putting it at the disposal of the greyhounds and, after the haul is finished, in removing the piece from the greyhound to take it to its owner. In Andalusian farmhouses, large animals were used as guard dogs and small animals as rodent cleaners.

Podenco ibicenco (Ibizan Hound)

The origin of this breed in Spain comes from the island of Ibiza. The city of Ibiza was founded in 654 a. C. by the Carthaginians and it is a conjecture to establish the possibility that the first settlers would take with them their dogs of Egyptian origin for simple company and to hunt the abundant rabbits of the island.

In contrast to the commonly accepted theories, several genetic studies conducted in recent years have come to conclude that, contrary to the widespread belief that the hound is a type of primitive dog imported about 3,000 years ago from the Middle East area, these Dogs actually have a close genetic relationship with the rest of European hunting dogs and are no more "primitive" than most of them. See studies on the dog's genome.

Podenco Canario

It measures between 53 and 64 cm up to the cross. It is a slightly elongated dog with much muscle, with a brown color (chocolate) or also light brown or yellow, may or may not be accompanied by white markings; It usually has little fur. Start hunting from an early age, giving cases of animals less than three months that show strong hunter instinct. When they discover and / or pursue a prey, they emit a characteristic short and repetitive bark, known by hunters as "beat".

Podenco valenciano

HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE CANINE SOCIETY OF SPAIN
The Valencian podenco, new Spanish breed
Although the history of the Valencian podenco comes from afar, we began with the end, for its inclusion, by the RSCE, in the 5th group of Spanish breeds with Podencos Andaluz, Maneto, Canario and Ibicenco.

The Xarnego or Xarnego Valenciano is a hound (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hound) breed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_breed) of dog (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog) originating in Valencian Community (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valencian_Community), Spain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain). This breed is known by several names, according to the different areas of the Valencian geography: Xarnego, Xarnego Valenciano, Gos coniller, Podenco Valencíano. It was officially recognized by the Real Sociedad Canina de España in 2017.
This breed has three types of hair, smooth, hard and "sedeño", being the only type of Iberian podencos/pondengos having the latter type of hair also transmitted, as with some other autochthonous breed, of randomly way among litters that born of straight hair. The sedeño variety of this breed is known as "Polserut", local word for a particular type of coat in this breed, though long, is substantially different in layout and texture.

Perro de agua español. Spanish Water DogThe water dog is a canine race originally from Andalusia, Spain, traditionally used as a shepherd, helper on boats and in hunting. The breed was recognized by the Royal Canine Society of Spain in 1985 and by the International Cynological Federation in 1999.

http://www.perroaguaubrique.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/leon-cabras.jpg

There are several theories about the origin of the race. The most accepted considers that it is an archaic race introduced in Europe during the Islamic invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, which began in 711. Naturally it entered the south, establishing itself in Andalusia where it procreated and settled in the whole territory of Al-Andalus. Several centuries later, through canyons and waterways, it reached other countries in Western Europe, where it probably mixed up with similar groups.

Documents dating from the fourteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries mention the massive presence of Spanish water dogs in Seville, its port on the Guadalquivir River and its marshes.

Portuguese water dog

The Cão de Agua Português is a dog breed from Portugal, similar to the Spanish Water Dog. Some authors believe that this breed has a certain relationship with the Irish Kerry Blue Terrier. Old breed, it is thought that it accompanied the Portuguese sailors of the XV and XVI centuries.

Dogo español

The Spanish Bulldog is a rare Spanish breed in the process of recovery. It has a close relationship with the Spanish Alano, but it is larger. The Spanish Bulldog is recognized by the National Dog Association and consequently by the Alianz Canine Worldwide.

At present we find the most important population centers of the same in Spain (especially in the south of the country, in the region of Andalusia) and Norway.

During the period between the end of the s. IV and V, the Alano people are occupying large areas of southern Europe, including the Iberian Peninsula. This town is accompanied by their dogs of prey, which mestizan with the powerful dogs brought to the peninsula by Phoenicians and Romans, mainly. Miscegenation that gives rise to what would later be called Dogo, Presa or flat Spanish among other synonyms.

No. An uncle of mine had one when I was a child. I have had big breed dogs but now is not the time, they are for many years and it is necessary to be clear. The hound above all is the most popular, my brother has 10 podencos and even the handle. The water dog is easy to see, the greyhound also. The Alans very hard I think most do not even know them, I've seen Dogo one in my life and the Alano my uncle had. Perhaps in a few years they have become better known, it is possible.

Lupus ibericus

It is practically extinct throughout the national territory and where it is many times is because it has been introduced again.

Here in Spain there is also the dog-wolf and there are many legends and mysteries around him.
The shepherds tied a female dog in heat to get a wolf to mate with her. If a male wolf came only the system worked but if with the wolf came also a female wolf attacked the female dog to kill it.

It is said that hybrid puppies would develop like dogs and some would become a wolf so they had to be sacrificed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Mastiff (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Mastiff)

In the Iberian peninsula the mastiff appeared in especially rural areas, based on livestock, both shelf and nomadic, although the sector in which acquired more fame was in the transhumance that ran the peninsula from north to south, probably following customs that went back to the migrations of wild herbivores.

The golden jackal advances through Europe and already crosses the Alps

The species, which was isolated until half a century ago in isolated enclaves of the Balkans, has been observed for the first time in France

Its only limits seem to be the intense snows and the stable presence of wolves

https://estaticos.elperiodico.com/resources/jpg/5/5/chacal-dorado-bulgaria-1523648078655.jpg

https://www.elperiodico.com/es/ext_resources/infographics/2018/abril/chacal-dorado.jpg
The Slovenian specialist does not even rule out that the golden jackal can extend other territories of western Europe, including southern Italy, France and Spain, "except in areas where there is deep snow and stable presence of the wolf."

Mastín del Pirineo. Pyrenean Mastiff

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a Spanish herd-keeping breed originally from the Aragonese Pyrenees. It is included within the group, section 3ª molosos of the mountain type of the official classification of the International Cynological Federation.

For a long time the Pyrenean mastiff accompanied the flocks of sheep in their transhumant routes from the Aragonese Pyrenees to the Maestrazgo. Its main function was to guard and protect the flocks and their masters from the attacks of wolves, bears and thieves.

Hello Carlos.

Who is the character of your new avatar (He or She, LOL)?
In order not to run away from the thread's theme, I send you a pic of Golden Retriever puppies, my favorite breed.
Dogs are man's best friends, but I also love cats.

I also have a special affection for the native specie of Brazilian canid, the guaná wolf.
In the forest that covers the mountains of the caraça (that have peaks of 2.000 meters of high), locateds from 90 km of Belo Horizonte, live several of them.

Ah yes my avatar is Lady Cheddary

I had a Golden Retriever Diana and they are very good obedient and easy to educate. His father had been imported from Ireland to ride females in several breeding grounds in Spain. It is very important genetic control because I have seen other Golden bred by individuals or of unknown origin and were nervous. I felt sorry for his nobility, too good. They loose a lot of hair.

Can you post the photo of that Brazilian wolf? With the attachament it is not seen.

Italian Wolfdog (Hybrid) (Lupo Italiano)

The breed is protected by Presidential decree stipulating that this Italian 'State' dog can not be commercialized nor bred outside the officially recognized agency,

For over 15 years the Italian State Forestry Corps has used this wolf-dog hybrid as their main working dog.

That same thing of calling all dogs by the same name I have also met in Andalusia. It is more practical for the hunter to be.

My father what he does is that he gives another name to all the dogs we have had, to a dog that I put Deva and my father called Yoya, the dog attended to the two names.

Yes. He seems the dog from the African savannah. But the savannah dog is very small when compared to it. I think that its the largest canine in the world in stature, but it is not as robust as the European wolf or the American wolf. He has long legs. He is very tall, but very shy. It's a lone wolf. He does not live in packs and seeks a mate only during the mating season. He avoids contact with humans, so it is not dangerous for us. But obviously, I would not leave a child alone in a forest full of maned wolves. :)

The representation of the podenco in ancient art reminds me more of the paternal or paternal hound of Huelva than the Andalusian standard.

There is also a certain similarity between the Credenian and the Huelva podenco, perhaps there were relations between the Kingdom of Tartessos and Crete.

The paternal hound of Huelva was created with a male hound with a morphology different from the rest and an Andalusian hound female.

The Sabueso Español (Spanish Scenthound)is a scenthound (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scenthound) breed with its origin in the far north of Iberian Peninsula (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Peninsula), included in Group VI of F.C.I. classification. This breed has been used in this mountainous region since hundreds of years ago for all kind of game: wild boar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_boar), hare (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hare), brown bear (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_bear), wolf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf), red deer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_deer), fox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox), roe deer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roe_deer) and chamois (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamois). It is an exclusive working breed, employed in hunting with firearms.

The first description of Iberian scenthounds appears in chapter 39 of Libro de la Montería de Alfonso XI or The Hunting Book of Alfonso XI, a medieval tome of the 14th century for a Castillian king. After that, diverse descriptions of Iberian scenthounds appeared in various Spanish hunting books of the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries: two examples include Tratado de la Montería, or A Treatise on Hunting and Molina's late Renaissance book Discurso de la Montería, or A Discourse on Hunting, written in 1582

The official Spanish mastiff has no attitude for cattle or for the wolf, it is more a companion dog.
The mastín of work that is the authentic mastín is in height at least in the field with the shepherds.

It is the mastiff that appears in the old photographs that I put in the section of the Spanish mastiff.

I have a Carpathian shepherd(Ciobanesc Carpatin), a dog closely related to the Molossus of Epirus, the more wolfish variant.

Very intelligent animal, empathetic, yet independent, many times discrete,he unconditionally attacks bears or wolf packs in difficult situations, may practice selective defence(doesn't instinctively harass the newcomers, if he sees that is accepted by the master/shepherd or doesn't present a real threat).

It is breed by the people, usually shepherds,in the Carpathians for hundreds of years, many of them have wolf admixture.

I was not his first owner,it was not that easy to become friends.

The final approach was made when he escaped in the next yard, with my neighbor's wife yelling" Your dog is in our place!"
Since we're not 100% OK,he started to bite me,when I kept trying to grab his neck, until he got tired,I have never used physical violence against any of my dogs, however for a few seconds he became my girlfriend, didn't liked to be in somebody's arms, that's for sure.

Perro de presa canario

The Perro de Presa Canario, a.k.a. the Canary Mastiff, is a rare large Molosser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molosser)-type dog breed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_breed) originally bred for working livestock. The name of the breed is Spanish, means "Canarian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_Islands) catch dog (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_dog)", and is often shortened to "Presa Canario" or simply "Presa". The breed is sometimes also called Dogo Canario, meaning "Canarian Molosser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molosser)". It is the animal symbol of the island of Gran Canaria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gran_Canaria).

My dog sort of has a split personality in terms of his reaction to other people/other dogs.

When we take him for walks around our area or at the dock or other parks where there are a lot of people, he's extremely friendly, going up to people licking their hands if they stroke him, smelling but playing nicely with the other dogs.

However, when he's in our house or yard and an unknown person or dog or cat or squirrel or God forbid raccoon comes anywhere near he goes absolutely mental. I can barely hold him back if we're outside. Thank God for invisible fences. My landscaper, who's been working for me for 20 years told me he wouldn't come in the house unless I lock him up in a separate room.

I honestly don't know where this comes from. We got him as a tiny pup, and he's the most gentle, sweet, affectionate dog I've ever had.

Maybe he does have some Rottweiler or Doberman in him? I'm not going to spend 200.00 to test him. I just would like him to be a bit more accepting of strangers.

He's much larger now, almost 75 pounds, extremely strong and muscular, but still looks exactly like this:

Rottweiler mix

Probably the landscaper fears the dogs. Large dogs often scare many people for obvious reasons and if they also have a layer that can be mistaken for a Rotweiler even more.

Wow, my dog really looks like a Beauceron, except much bigger. He definitely doesn't have the Rottweiler face, but it may be in there somewhere, that or a bit of Doberman.

Well, on the bright side, my alarm system is now redundant. :) Unfortunately, all the ladies who take walks together in the morning now take a different route!

I'm partial to the scent hound, obviously. Looks a lot like my dog. :)

If I lived in Greece and wanted a dog I'd probably get a Kokoni:

It's an ancient breed as evidenced in the first couple of shots in that video. The curly tail kills me!

Adorable. I'd get one if they were available here. Probably easier for me to handle too. My beloved brute almost tore my hand off last week when I went to a friend's house in the country. He saw a fox I think. I had the leash around my wrist. I'm not a very heavy woman, and he's seventy pounds of muscle and incredibly fast. He jerked it right off my wrist.

Very intelligent and companionable dog. You could probably get a rescue one if you lived in Europe. I don't know if they ever make it to these shores.
You could check.

Very pretty. About 20 years ago it had a resurgence here because people learned to buy puppies from hunters, you always see one.
