Generations of my family have lived and worked here. Sadly, it's changed due to, on the one hand, the arrival of many "refugees" who can't or won't assimilate, and on the other hand, the ubiquitous presence of large cruise ships. Nice for a visit nowadays, but better to live in Sarzana.
Portovenere, the Port of Venus (with English subtitles). All of my family have taken to having their wedding photos done outside the church on the promontory. It's really lovely. I have to admit I also love it there when I go around Christmas and it's almost empty. It's otherworldly.
However, I'm usually home during August, and I never miss being there on August 17th when we all light candles to illuminate it.
I can't believe how strong a Lombard accent the ceramic maker still has after 30 years in Portovenere. Makes me appreciate the sweetness of our own accent.
