The Danish Vikings had to build a wall to protect themselves from the German Empire

I didnt know that. I thought it was made in Scandinavia out of imported Asian steel. Considering they are mostly found up north.

The Danish Vikings had to build a wall to protect themselves from the German Empire

yes, and Dannevirke was built for that reason. Because the Germans were sometimes aggressive, and the wall could keep them out so the Nordic could fight among themselves in peace. But the wall had nothing to do with the Nordic expansion. The eastwards expansion had to do with the turks closing...

The Danish Vikings had to build a wall to protect themselves from the German Empire

There is more to it. Defensive works, though per definition built out of fear, are not only defencive. Castels, for example can be the exact opposite, symbols of power. And is a wall between to countries not just a one sided castle?

For your perspective: Compare Lindisfarne to a motorcycle gang hitting the local pawn shop, and "Dane law" to "The American lead coalition" occupying Iraq.

I found this in one of my pots of tomatoes in the glasshouse a couple of weeks ago. The soil comes from out in the garden, but "the garden is not just any garden". I live 50 m from the Baltic shore and a small river has run through my garden before it was drained and led through pipes as a part...

OMG. A wild thread. Im Danish, I have learned to read runes in history classes when I was 12 years old or something, we found it interesting, and used runes for secret messages, such as love letters. Runes is not a language, its an alphabet of mostly konsonants, made with straight lines, so they...

    Who were Cimmerians?

I can inform you a bit about the cimbri (latin name.) They come from "Himmerland", Moraene hills in the middle of Jutland, Denmark. The Cimbri certianly migrated, south through Europe. Reached France and Spain, fought the Romans and were annihilated in about 200 bc. I have never head of them...

The Danish Vikings had to build a wall to protect themselves from the German Empire

Everything becomes clearer if you translate viking with "marine", like in "US marine". Vikings were often the second sons that had no enheritance in times of population growth, and had to find their fortune or land elsewhere. Evenually riches, and come home and buy land. They did not flee to...
