Politics Osama Bin Laden is dead

OK, I'll come clean - he's sitting in my family room watching daytime TV with me. I think that for the most part I have respected the fact that this is a European forum and have consequently held my tongue when I see the usual anti-US comments. I certainly expected all kinds of denial that...

    News about Greece

I would avoid responding in a case like this. It is clearly intended to provoke one into a fight. We would say that Deja Vu has "an axe to grind" against Greeks.

Thank you for the good wishes. It was literally the first thing that I heard over the car radio as my son got in for me to bring him to school.

Origin of the Goidels in North West Germany

Ok, thank you. In this case it may have been a loanword. It would have been a remarkable parrallel if Equus got dropped for Caballus and Ech got dropped for Capall without some influence of one on the other. Perhaps Capall came into the picture during the days of the Anglo-Normans.

Origin of the Goidels in North West Germany

Yes, of course meanings can be changed and words can be dropped in time. I probably did not phrase my question properly. Equus of course was the word normally used for horse in Latin (That word being very close to the recontructed PIE word for horse). Caballus was used to mean a nag or...

Origin of the Goidels in North West Germany

Ok, linguists, please help me out here- My understanding had been that the Latin word for horse was Equus and that the word Caballus, originally meaning nag or a horse of lesser quality, began to be used to describe a horse in general in the vulgar tongues. This continued on into the Romance...

Did you perhaps mistype what you wanted to say here?

Since when did Southern German and Austrians speak a Germanic language ?

Note that I did write that a number of Celts were absorbed, such as the Bastarnae. Note also that I utilized the term "Germanized" as opposed to saying that the region was occupied fully or mostly by Germans. The term displacement as used here is meant to what we know from history with tribes...

Ok, I was not aware of Japanese going through two periods of hybridization. Thank you.

The American Civil War as a continuation of a lasting British division

Welcome aboard and trust me, your post was not long at all. I too came across this forum while trying to do research. I was a little disappointed that this thread seemed to give out quickly. Maybe your post(s) will get it started again.

That seems to make sense to me. It may very well be the case that much of the early movements into the West were during the Chalcolithic (referring to copper and stone using) Age. While reading 'The Horse, the Wheel, and the Language", I came across many archaeological examples of copper...

    Etruscans=Illyrians=Pelasgi //// tuscans=albanians ?????

I offer apologies in advance for going off-topic again. I do agree that either Japanese derived from a proto-Korean or that both of them have a common ancestor. An interesting thought on this is which one should be considered a hybrid. Although as far as I know, Korean has retained its own...

Ok, I probably should have assumed that 'Germanic" was not what you wanted to write. My fault too. In addition to place-name, such as that of Bohemia, an interesting note would be the application of the term "Germani" by early writers in applying to Celts of that area. Some of the tribes, such...

Hey, relax man. I am confused from the following position: Trying to make sense of what the marker itself tells us concerning its association with a particular group, if any. In other words, I am trying to figure out what the presence of that genetic marker may tell us. I know that people...
